If you own a 5.9L 360 Magnum — Ram 1500/2500, Dakota R/T, Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited — and the engine has developed a distributor that leaks oil, a no-spark or stumble at temperature, or visibly chewed distributor gear teeth, you are not looking at an electrical problem. You are looking at cam walk: the factory hydraulic roller camshaft has migrated forward in the block, and the distributor gear has been grinding into the cam gear at the wrong angle ever since. This post walks the diagnosis, the retrofit roller fix, and the supporting parts that make a Magnum rebuild a one-time job.

Why the 360 Magnum Walks Its Cam

The Magnum series (5.2L 318 Magnum and 5.9L 360 Magnum, 1992–2003) was Chrysler's first factory hydraulic roller small block. Compared to the LA-series flat-tappet engines that preceded it, the Magnum block dropped the center oil gallery to the lifter bores (oil now feeds through the pushrods to the rocker pedestals) and used a different head bolt pattern. What it kept, marginally, was the cam thrust control system.

On a roller cam, axial thrust load on the camshaft is significantly higher than on a flat-tappet. The Magnum's factory thrust setup — a thrust plate / button arrangement against the front of the block — is borderline adequate at the durability margins Chrysler accepted, and on aged engines with tired bearings and a stretched timing chain, it gives up.

When the cam walks forward:

  • The distributor drive gear (cut helical, driven off the rear of the cam) loses its proper mesh angle with the cam gear
  • The distributor gear wears at an accelerated rate — bronze gears literally peel, steel gears mushroom and shed material
  • The distributor body gets pulled or rotated slightly out of square with the housing bore, and the distributor base seal weeps oil
  • Eventually the distributor cam sensor signal loses precision, throwing intermittent ignition events at temperature

Symptoms That Point to Cam Walk

  • Oil leak at the base of the distributor. The seal is not the root cause — cam walk has rotated the distributor enough to break the seal contact.
  • Visibly worn distributor gear when you pull the distributor for service. Steel gears with mushroomed tooth tips, bronze gears with chewed teeth, copper or brass shavings in the lifter valley or on the dipstick.
  • Intermittent stumble or no-start when hot. As the gear wears, the cam sensor reference deteriorates and the ECM loses sync.
  • Excessive cam endplay measurable with a dial indicator on the cam sprocket bolt — anything meaningfully beyond the factory endplay spec in Mopar service data is suspicious, and the further it moves the more certain the walk.
  • Timing cover oil leak that does not respond to a cover gasket replacement — cam thrust load is pushing against the cover seal area.

Diagnosis Procedure

  1. Pull the distributor and inspect the gear under a bright light. Photograph the wear pattern. Even wear across the tooth face is normal; concentrated wear at the top or bottom of the teeth means cam mesh angle is off.
  2. Check distributor base for oil weep before removal — confirm the seal contact issue.
  3. Pull the timing cover. Check the cam thrust plate / button for galling on the contact surface. Spin the cam by hand and feel for excessive endplay — set up a dial indicator on the cam sprocket bolt and pull the cam axially while reading.
  4. Inspect the timing chain while the cover is off. A stretched chain is almost universal on Magnums with cam walk and is part of the same service.
  5. Inspect cam bearings through the lifter bores with a borescope. Worn front cam bearings amplify the walk problem.

The Fix: Retrofit Hydraulic Roller Lifter Kit

If the engine is going to be opened, the durable answer is a retrofit hydraulic roller cam and lifter package with a proper thrust control system. This is the same bottom-end fix that solves the Magnum's cam walk and lets you upgrade the cam grind in the same operation.

Lifter Kit Options

  • Hughes Engines retrofit roller kit — the Mopar-specialist option, comes with a billet thrust plate and dowel reinforcement. Tie-bar lifters, chrome-moly. Hughes is the Mopar specialty shop and the kit fits both LA and Magnum applications with the right bolt pattern selection.

All retrofit kits include: lifters (16, tie-bar style), thrust plate, hardware, occasionally a billet timing gear set. Confirm the kit you are ordering includes the thrust plate — not all do.

Match cam grind to: target HP, headers / intake / carb combination, converter stall on automatics, and rear gear. A 360 Magnum stock-ratio rocker (1.6) cam choice is different from a 1.7-rocker upgrade build.

Timing Chain and Distributor Gear Requirements

The retrofit roller has specific supporting SKU requirements:

  • Cloyes True Roller 9-3146 or equivalent double-roller timing set rated for retrofit roller cam thrust load — do NOT reuse the OEM stretched chain. Confirm LA-vs-Magnum timing set compatibility before ordering — the cam sprocket bolt pattern can differ, and a Magnum-specific set may be required.
  • Bronze or melonized distributor gear matched to the cam material. Steel cams need a bronze or melonized gear; do not pair a steel distributor gear against a steel roller cam — it will eat itself fast. COMP Cams 12210 is a category-standard melonized gear. Check the cam-material-to-distributor-gear pairing against your cam supplier's chart (COMP, Hughes and Lunati each publish their own).
  • New distributor base o-ring / seal kit — install fresh seals after the cam swap.
  • Hardened oil pump driveshaft (Milodon or Mopar Performance) if the build is moving to a high-volume oil pump (Melling M72HV / M72HVS).

Why This Is Usually a Magnum Rebuild

Cam walk on a 360 Magnum is rarely an isolated fix. By the time a Magnum has walked its cam:

  • Timing chain is stretched (replacing it)
  • Front cam bearings are worn (might as well replace cam bearings while the cam is out)
  • Rocker pedestals and pushrods may show wear (Magnum oil-through-pushrod system is hard on tired pushrods)
  • Upper plenum gasket is probably weeping (the famous Magnum 5.9 plenum gasket failure — replace with the upgraded aluminum plenum from Hughes or Bouchillon while the intake is off)
  • Front timing cover gasket is the source of an oil leak nobody can ever quite seal

The job typically becomes a full Magnum rebuild: cam, lifters, timing set, chain, distributor gear, plenum gasket, oil pan gasket, valve cover gaskets, and often a fresh head gasket set if the truck is past 150K miles. Bundle the parts up front — opening this engine twice is the failure mode.
