How to Identify a 427 Side Oiler vs a Counterfeit — Block Stamp Guide

A verified Ford 427 Side Oiler block is a five-figure piece of iron before you spend a dollar machining it. That price is exactly why the FE world has a counterfeit problem. A 390 block shares the FE bore spacing, the same external silhouette, and — to an untrained eye across a swap-meet table — the same general look. Restamping a 390 pad and selling it as a Side Oiler is documented fraud, and the people doing it are good at it.

This guide is the checklist we run before we'll call a block a Side Oiler. None of these checks is sufficient alone. A real block passes all of them, in agreement with each other. The moment one check disagrees with the others, you stop and treat the block as suspect until proven otherwise.

First, Know What You're Authenticating

"427" describes three different things people conflate, so get the terms straight before you inspect anything:

  • Displacement — 4.232" bore × 3.780" stroke. The 427 shares its 3.780" stroke with the 390, which is part of why the fraud works.
  • Oiling systemTop Oiler (1963–64) feeds the cam galley first and the mains last; Side Oiler (1965–67) adds a dedicated gallery down the driver's side of the block that feeds the main bearings first. The Side Oiler is the desirable, valuable block.
  • Riser — Low / Medium / High Riser refers to intake port height on the heads, not the block. Don't let a seller use "Medium Riser" to imply "Side Oiler." They're unrelated facts.

You are authenticating a block casting plus its oiling architecture. The heads, intake, and stamp are supporting evidence — they are not the block.

Check 1 — The Casting Number

Every FE block carries a raised casting number on the side of the block, typically on the lifter-valley side / driver's side flange area. This is cast into the iron at the foundry — it is much harder to fake than a stamped pad because altering it means welding and re-machining raised iron, which leaves obvious evidence.

Side Oiler castings to look for:

  • C5AE-D — 1965 Side Oiler (suffix letters vary by production month — confirm against a marque authority)
  • C6ME-A — 1966 Side Oiler service/medium-riser-era casting (confirm against a marque authority)
  • C7AE-A — 1966–67 Side Oiler (confirm the suffix against a marque authority)

A 390 will carry a C-prefix casting in the 390/FE family that is not on the Side Oiler list — confirm the casting number against a printed FE reference, not memory. If the casting number is a known 390 number, nothing stamped on the pad matters: it's a 390. Full stop.

Red flags on the casting number itself: - Grinding marks, weld bead, or filler around the raised number - A number that's been "freshened" with a die grinder so it reads cleanly while the surrounding iron is rough - A casting number that doesn't appear in any FE reference at all (someone may have ground the original off and re-cut something)

Check 2 — The Side Oil Gallery (the Defining Feature)

This is the check that can't be faked, because it's the actual engineering difference. The Side Oiler has a dedicated oil gallery running along the lower driver's side of the block, external to and below the cam galley, feeding the main bearing saddles directly.

Where to look: - Externally, you can often see the gallery as a raised boss / passage along the lower driver's side of the block skirt. - Internally — with the block apart — you can follow the gallery to confirm it feeds the main saddles first, then routes up to the cam and lifters. On a Top Oiler or a 390, the priority is reversed (cam/lifters fed before mains). - The oil-filter and pump passages and the plugs in the gallery ends are part of the Side Oiler layout.

If a block is stamped "427" on the pad but has no side gallery, it is not a Side Oiler — best case it's a Top Oiler, worst case it's a restamped 390. A 390 physically does not have this gallery. This single check eliminates the majority of fakes.

Check 3 — Cross-Bolted Main Caps

The 427 (both Top and Side Oiler) uses cross-bolted main caps: in addition to the two vertical main bolts, the center main caps are clamped horizontally with bolts through the side of the block skirt into the cap. You can see the cross-bolt heads on the outside lower edge of the block on both sides.

  • A genuine 427 has the cast bosses and the drilled/tapped cross-bolt holes and the cross-bolt hardware.
  • A standard 390 has 2-bolt main caps and no cross-bolt provision in the skirt. You cannot add cross-bolts to a 390 block — the casting isn't there.

Watch for: a block that has the cross-bolt bosses but inspect whether they're actually drilled and used. Also confirm the caps themselves are the correct cross-bolted 427 caps and not later replacements. Caps and block should agree.

Note: cross-bolted mains alone prove it's a 427-architecture block, not specifically a Side Oiler. Combine with the side gallery (Check 2) to land on Side Oiler specifically.

Check 4 — The Pad Stamp (Treat With the Most Suspicion)

The machined pad — usually on the front of the block near the deck — carries a stamped code. This is the easiest thing to fake, so it is the last piece of evidence you weight, never the first. A correct-looking stamp on a block that fails Checks 1–3 is a confirmed counterfeit, not a "maybe."

What an honest stamp looks like: - Consistent character font and depth — factory stamps were struck with a gang or individual dies that produce uniform character height, spacing, and depth. - Correct character set / sequence for the era — check the exact 1965–67 427 pad-code format against a marque authority before declaring a stamp "correct". - Stamp wear and patina that matches the surrounding pad — a fresh, sharp stamp on a weathered pad is a screaming red flag.

Restamp tells: - Mixed fonts — characters that don't match each other in style or size - Uneven depth or angle — hand-stamped one character at a time - A pad that's been milled lower/cleaner than the rest of the deck to erase an old stamp before re-cutting a new one — look for a pad that sits below the surrounding casting plane or has machining witness marks - Over-stamping / ghost characters under the visible stamp

Because pad-stamp fraud is so well practiced, a block whose entire claim to being a Side Oiler rests on the stamp — with no corroborating gallery, cross-bolts, and casting number — should be assumed fake.

Check 5 — Corroborating Details

These don't authenticate on their own but should agree with everything above:

  • Bore size — a genuine 427 is bore 4.232"-ish (standard); measure it. A 390 at 4.050" standard that's been bored won't reach 427 displacement without unsafe wall thickness. Sonic-check wall thickness on any "427" before you trust a big overbore.
  • Heads — Side Oilers ran Medium Riser castings in the 1965–67 era; the C8OE (shared with 428 CJ / 427 Low Riser) shows up too. Heads can be swapped, so they corroborate at best — never let heads "make" the block a 427.
  • Date codes — casting date code on the block (cast clock with month/day/year digits) should fall before the assembly date and be consistent with a 1965–67 production window. A date code from the wrong era kills the claim.
  • Provenance — original invoice, fender tag / data plate on a numbers-matching car, known ownership chain. Worth real money on a resto-grade block.

The Two-Minute Field Triage

If you've got a block in front of you and limited time, run these in order and stop at the first failure:

  1. Side oil gallery present? No → not a Side Oiler. Done.
  2. Cross-bolted mains, actually drilled and bolted? No → not a 427 architecture. Done.
  3. Casting number on the Side Oiler list (and not ground/welded)? No / tampered → suspect.
  4. Pad stamp consistent in font/depth/patina and corroborated by 1–3? No → restamp.
  5. Bore, date code, and heads all agree? Any disagreement → suspect until resolved.

A real Side Oiler passes 1 through 5 in agreement. A counterfeit fails at step 1 or 2 almost every time, because the gallery and the cross-bolt provision are cast in and can't be added to a 390.

When the Numbers Are Right but Something Feels Off

Even with a clean checklist, on a five-figure transaction, pay for third-party authentication. Marque experts and FE-specific authenticators do this for a living, can read pad codes against factory records, and will magnaflux for cracks and old repairs while they're at it. The authentication fee is a rounding error against the price of a real Side Oiler — and against the cost of building a "427" that turns out to be a tarted-up 390.

After You've Verified It — Build It Right

Once a block is confirmed, two non-negotiables on the FE platform carry straight over to the 427:

  • ARP cross-bolt and main hardware — the cross-bolted mains are the 427's signature strength; torque them with a proper ARP main stud / cross-bolt kit to spec, not the 60-year-old factory bolts.
  • ARP hardened oil pump driveshaft — the FE oil-pump intermediate shaft failure mode kills FE engines regardless of displacement. Every FE rebuild — Side Oiler included — gets a matching hardened oil pump driveshaft. Zero exceptions.

And as with any FE: match the damper and flexplate to the rotating assembly's balance, not to the block casting.

What to Do Next

  • Run the five-check triage in order — gallery and cross-bolts first, pad stamp last
  • Confirm every casting number against a printed FE reference, not memory
  • Treat the pad stamp as the weakest evidence, never the proof
  • Budget for third-party authentication on any five-figure block
  • Sonic-check wall thickness before trusting a large overbore claim
