A diesel does not work that way. It runs unthrottled and lean, drawing in essentially all the air it can at any given rpm, and it makes more or less power purely by varying the quantity of fuel injected. Remove the fuel and the engine idles down. There is nothing for a butterfly to do, which is why the intake tract on a 12-valve runs from the air cleaner to the turbo to the intercooler to the intake horn with no restriction in it anywhere.

On the 5.9 12-valve — the 6BT, used in Dodge Ram trucks from 1989 through 1998 — that fuel metering is fully mechanical. The throttle cable. The most common actual failure. The steel cable itself rarely breaks; the plastic ferrule at either end goes brittle with heat and age and lets go, or the outer sheath kinks and binds. Symptoms are unmistakable: the pedal goes slack, or it feels notchy and sticky, or the engine holds a few hundred rpm above idle after you lift off because the cable is not letting the lever return. Inspect it any time you have the airbox out. A cable replacement is typically well under two hours of shop labour.

The return spring and ball stud. The lever is held against its idle stop by a return spring, and the cable connects with a small ball stud and clip.   1. Watch the lever move. Have someone press the pedal to the floor while you watch the lever on the pump. It should sweep smoothly to its full-travel stop and snap back cleanly to the idle stop. If it does not reach the stop, the cable is out of adjustment or stretched. If it does not return, the cable is binding or the spring is tired.
  2. Check the cable ends. Look specifically at the plastic ferrules and the clip at the ball stud. Cracks here are the single most common cause of a sudden loss of pedal.
  3. Feel for slack. Excessive free play at the top of pedal travel usually means an adjustment at the cable bracket, not a new part.
  4. Look for fuel dampness at the shaft. Clean the top of the pump, run the engine, and look again. That tells you whether the seal is weeping.
  5. Stop guessing at the pump. If the linkage is right and the truck still runs badly, the problem is fuel supply, filtration, lines, timing or injectors — not the thing you are calling a throttle body.
