TL;DR: 500 horsepower from an FE 428 is 1.17 hp per cubic inch — the mildest target in this whole build series, easier per cube than a 500 hp 383 and far easier than a 550 hp 347. The FE does not punish you at the dyno; it punishes you at the parts counter. There is no 428-block stroker assembly in this catalog and there should not be: the FE is already at 3.984 in of stroke, and the way the FE world gets past 428 cubic inches is a 445 built on a 390 block. Read the intake-height section before you buy a cylinder head, and read the oil pump driveshaft section before you buy anything at all.


500 HP Is Not the Hard Part

Write the target as output per cubic inch and set it beside the builds we have already worked through.

At 1.17 hp/ci the airflow requirement is unremarkable. A 500 hp naturally aspirated 428 wants roughly 275–290 cfm at 0.600 in of lift on the intake side and a cam in the 230–240 degree at .050 neighbourhood, matched to the specific head and converter you run. Any of the aluminum FE heads we list will clear that. This is not a difficult horsepower number.

What makes an FE build expensive and easy to get wrong is everything around the number: five mutually incompatible intake port heights, four separate balance weights, a valvetrain nobody stocks, an oil pump drive that kills engines, and a catalog — ours included — that splits the 428 across several different tags. That is what the rest of this article is about.

Start at the family page and stay inside it: Ford FE big-block parts. The FE is not an FT truck tall-deck, not a 385-series 429/460, not a MEL, and not a 351M. No parts are shared with any of them.

There Is No 428 Stroker Here — and That Is the Right Answer

The keyword says "428 stroker." The honest reply is that a 428 is already the stroked FE.

A 428 is a 4.13 in bore on a 3.984 in stroke. That is the longest stroke Ford put in a production FE. Adding stroke to it means a 4.25 in crank swinging inside the thinnest-walled block of the family — the low-nickel "brick" 428 casting was built for torque in a Galaxie, not for clearancing and 500 hp. The people who actually build big-inch FEs do not start there.

Every one of them is built on a 390 block or a 427 Side Oiler block. None is built on a 428.

Read the 445 row again: it is 17 cubic inches larger than a 428, it starts from the 390 block — the most findable FE casting there is — and our own listing describes it as a 500 to 650 hp naturally aspirated assembly. If your goal is 500 horsepower and big-inch FE cubes, CPP-FORD-FE-390-ROTASM-SCAT-03 or its Eagle, Callies, K1, Survival and Pond Racing equivalents are the parts you are actually shopping for. Compare them side by side under rotating assemblies.

If instead you have a numbers-matching 428 that has to stay a 428, then say so plainly: you are doing a 428 rebuild with heads, a cam and compression, not a stroker build. At 1.17 hp/ci that reaches 500 hp comfortably. Both assemblies need block clearancing at 445 and 482, and cross-bolted 427 blocks need ARP main studs — our own assembly notes say so.

The 428 Is Split Across Four Tag Islands

This is the most useful thing on this page, and it is a fault on our side, not yours.

No single tag completes this engine. A buyer who lands on the plain FE 428 rows gets a good short block and no way to finish it, while the cam, head, intake, gasket and balance parts he needs are filed one tag over under Cobra Jet — or, in the case of the entire oiling system and the roller retrofit kits, under 390 even though the titles read "Ford FE 390 / 428."

Until that is fixed, the practical instruction is: shop the 390 and Cobra Jet tags as well as the 428 tag, and confirm fitment with us on anything crossing between them.

Intake Height Is the FE's Wrong-Part Trap

Ford built FE cylinder heads in several port-height classes, and the intake manifold has to match the class — not the displacement, not the year, the class:

  • Low Riser
  • Medium Riser
  • High Riser
  • Cobra Jet / Super Cobra Jet
  • Tunnel Port

They are not cross-compatible. Bolting a Medium Riser intake to a High Riser head gives you a port mismatch and a vacuum leak, and the parts will physically go together far enough to make you think it worked.

Buy the head and the intake from the same height class in the same order, and never mix an SCJ-class head with a Medium Riser manifold left over from a 390. Browse cylinder heads and intake manifolds together, not in separate sessions a month apart.

One caution: none of the FE head rows publishes a runner volume, a chamber volume or a flow figure. Every one is titled "FE Cylinder Head Pair (Bare)" and stops. Chamber cc sets your static compression, so confirm it with us against the piston you have chosen. You cannot spec a 500 hp combination from our FE head titles as they currently read.

The Camshaft: The FE Was Never Factory Hydraulic Roller

Every factory FE camshaft is a flat tappet, and both 428-tagged cams we list are flat tappets — CPP-FORD-FE-428CJ-CAM-COMPCAMS-15 and CPP-FORD-FE-428SCJ-CAM-COMPCAMS-16.

At 500 horsepower that becomes a decision rather than a default. The spring pressure needed to control an FE valvetrain at 6,000 rpm is the same pressure that wipes a flat tappet lobe during break-in, and modern low-zinc oil has narrowed that margin further. If you are already inside the engine, the retrofit hydraulic roller is the more durable build:

All three are titled for "Ford FE 390 / 428" while carrying a 390 SKU — the tag-island problem again. The kit is link-bar lifters, spider and dogbones, and it brings two consequences that are not optional:

The distributor gear has to match the cam material. An iron flat tappet cam takes the standard iron gear; a steel roller core needs a bronze or compatible steel gear. Getting this wrong grinds the gear into the oil pan and takes the engine with it.

Valley clearance must be checked. Our own kit note calls for a 0.300 in-plus clearance check. Do it before the engine is assembled, not after.

The Valvetrain This Catalog Cannot Sell You

Stated plainly, because it changes the shopping order.

Across all 195 Ford FE rows in this catalog there are zero valvetrain parts. No valve springs, no retainers, no locks, no valves, no pushrods, no lifters, and no rocker arms.

That last one matters more on an FE than on almost any other engine. The FE uses shaft-mounted rocker arms, and a set of adjustable aftermarket shaft rockers is one of the largest single line items on a serious FE build — comfortably more than the camshaft. It is not here.

Compounding it: every FE cylinder head we list is sold as a bare pair. No valves, no springs, no retainers, no seals. So the head purchase on a 500 hp FE is incomplete by definition, and the valvetrain that completes it has to be sourced elsewhere and matched to your cam's lobe and the head's installed height. Budget for it before you order the heads, not after they arrive.

There are also no standalone FE connecting rods — rods exist only inside the rotating assemblies — which is another reason the complete 445 assembly is the cleaner purchase than a crank on its own.

The Two Parts That Actually Kill FEs

One: the oil pump intermediate driveshaft. Every FE rebuild kit body in this catalog carries the same line — every FE rebuild must include a hardened ARP oil pump intermediate shaft, because the stock shaft-to-pump joint twists and spins off under pressure, which is instant oil starvation and a spun bearing. It is the FE's signature catastrophic failure.

The part is CPP-FORD-FE-390-OP-ARP-06. Note the SKU: it is filed under the 390 tag only. The 428 rebuild kits that mandate it do not have it listed alongside them. Buy it with the kit anyway, and add the support bushing (CPP-FORD-FE-390-OP-POP-09 or CPP-FORD-FE-390-OP-SURVIVAL-10) while you are in oil pumps.

Two: external balance. The 428 family is externally balanced, and there is more than one weight in play:

  • A 390 damper on a 428 — or the reverse — will destroy the engine.
  • The Super Cobra Jet uses LeMans rod weight, which is a different balance again from the standard Cobra Jet.

Two FE-specific assembly notes worth carrying to the machine shop. Piston compression height differs between 352, 360, 390 and 428 — those pistons are not interchangeable even when the bore matches, so order by engine, not by bore. And the FE intake gasket doubles as the valley pan; there is no separate valley cover, which is why intake sealing on an FE is a rebuild item rather than an afterthought. Skip the hypereutectic rows at this power level and stay with the forged sets from pistons.
