6.0 Power Stroke Blue Smoke Under Acceleration
TL;DR: Blue smoke is burning engine oil, and on a 6.0 Power Stroke that oil has more ways into the combustion chamber than it does on most diesels. Smoke that shows up only when you get into the throttle usually points at the turbocharger centre section, the rings and crankcase pressure, or a simple overfilled crankcase, in roughly that order of frequency. What blue smoke actually means on a 6.0
Colour is the first diagnostic tool you have, and it is free. Blue or blue-grey smoke is atomised engine oil that reached the combustion chamber and burned, or partially burned, on the way out. It smells of burnt oil rather than raw diesel, it tends to hang in the air behind the truck instead of dissipating quickly, and it leaves a light film on whatever it lands on.
The important qualifier in this question is "under acceleration." When smoke appears only as you load the engine, you are being told something about pressure. Under load the turbo is spinning hard and its centre housing sees high shaft speed with boost pressure on the compressor side. Under load the cylinders also make their highest peak pressures, so any leak past the rings pushes hardest into the crankcase. Both of those change with throttle. A worn valve guide or stem seal, by contrast, tends to show as a puff at cold start or after a long idle and then clear up, which is a different pattern entirely.
So before you touch a wrench, write down the pattern you actually have:
- Blue puff at start-up that clears in ten or twenty seconds, little smoke on the road: think guides and seals.
- Little smoke at idle, a visible blue haze the moment you load it, worse the longer you stay in the throttle: think turbo centre section, rings, or crankcase pressure.
- Blue haze more or less all the time, plus a rising oil level or a fuel smell in the oil: think injectors and the HEUI side of the engine.
Blue, white or grey: read the colour before you spend
The 6.0 has two very well-known failure modes, the oil cooler plugging and the EGR cooler splitting, and both of those produce white smoke, because coolant is boiling in the cylinder rather than oil burning. Chasing an oil problem with a coolant symptom is the most expensive mistake on this platform.

The causes worth checking, in order
1. The oil level itself
Start here because it is free and it is common. An overfilled crankcase lets the rotating assembly whip the oil, which raises crankcase pressure and pushes oil out through the crankcase ventilation path into the intake tract, where it burns. On a 6.0 the ventilation system routes oil vapour back into the intake, so anything that raises crankcase pressure eventually shows as smoke rather than as a puddle on the driveway.
Check the level cold, on level ground, and compare it against the dipstick marks. If it is over the full mark, drain to the correct level before diagnosing anything else, and take the capacity from the service manual for your model year and chassis rather than assuming. Then work out why it was over. A rising oil level on a HEUI engine can mean fuel is getting into the oil, which is its own problem.
2. Crankcase pressure and the rings
Blue smoke that scales with throttle position and load is the classic signature of blow-by. Combustion gas leaking past worn rings pressurises the crankcase; that pressure drives oil mist out through the ventilation system and into the intake, and it also fights the turbocharger's gravity oil drain, which can make a perfectly healthy turbo look like a failed one.
You can get a first read on this without pulling anything apart. With the engine warm and idling, pull the oil fill cap and the dipstick and look for pulsing vapour and pressure. A slight breath is normal. A steady plume you can feel on your hand is not. A shop can put a manometer or a low-range pressure gauge on the crankcase and compare the reading against the limit in the service information. That number is worth measuring rather than guessing, because it is what decides whether you are buying a turbocharger or planning an engine.
3. The turbocharger centre section
The 6.0 uses a variable-geometry turbo mounted in the valley, fed with pressurised oil and drained back to the crankcase by gravity through a drain tube. Two things kill it in ways that make blue smoke.
Seal wear on the shaft. Once the piston-ring style seals in the centre housing give up, oil migrates toward the compressor or turbine side and burns. Under acceleration, with the shaft at full speed, the leak is at its worst, which is exactly the symptom in the question.
A restricted drain. Gravity drains only work if the crankcase is not fighting them. A coked, kinked or partially blocked drain tube, or high crankcase pressure from the section above, backs oil up into the centre housing and pushes it past seals that were otherwise serviceable.
That is why you check crankcase pressure and the drain before condemning the turbo. Fitting a new turbo to an engine with high crankcase pressure buys you the same symptom again in short order. Pull the intake pipe at the compressor outlet and look inside: a wet, oily film there points strongly at the turbo or at the ventilation path feeding it. 4. HEUI injectors, the 6.0-specific path
This is the one that catches people coming from a mechanical diesel. The 6.0 fires its injectors hydraulically. A high-pressure oil pump feeds a rail that actuates each injector, so engine oil is a working fluid inside the injector body. An internal failure can let control oil into the fuel side or into the cylinder, and the result is smoke plus, often, a slow rise in fuel dilution or oil consumption with no external leak anywhere on the engine.
Suspect this route when the smoke comes with uneven cylinder contribution, a hard hot start, or oil consumption you cannot account for at the turbo or the breather. Diagnosis is a scan tool job: look at injection control pressure behaviour and per-cylinder contribution against the values in the service information for your model year. 5. Valve guides and stem seals
Less common on a 6.0 than on a high-mileage gasoline engine, but not impossible on a truck with hard hours or a lot of idle time. Guides and seals classically produce the start-up puff and the puff after a long downhill coast, not a load-proportional haze. If the pattern matches and the top end is coming apart anyway, deal with them while the heads are off rather than doing the job twice. Narrowing it down in an afternoon
A sensible order that costs almost nothing to work through:
- Confirm the colour and the smell in daylight, with a helper loading the engine while you watch from outside.
- Check and correct the oil level, and check the oil for fuel dilution and for coolant.
- Warm the engine and check crankcase pressure at the fill cap, then properly with a gauge if it feels strong.
- Pull the intake pipe at the compressor outlet and inspect for oil.
- Inspect the turbo oil drain tube for coking, kinking or restriction.
- Scan for codes and look at injection control pressure and cylinder contribution.
- Only then choose between turbocharger, injectors, or a compression and leak-down test on the short block.
Steps one through five are an hour or two of shop time on most trucks. A leak-down test across all eight cylinders is typically a two to four hour job once access is accounted for. A turbo replacement on a 6.0 is a valley job, so plan for several hours and expect to renew every gasket and seal you disturb rather than reusing them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is blue smoke on a 6.0 Power Stroke always the turbo? No. The turbo is a common cause but it is very often the victim rather than the culprit. High crankcase pressure from worn rings, a restricted turbo oil drain and a simply overfilled crankcase all produce the same blue haze. Measure crankcase pressure before you buy a turbocharger.
My 6.0 only smokes blue when I accelerate hard, then it runs clean. Is that serious? It is worth diagnosing but it is not automatically catastrophic. Load-proportional blue smoke means the problem is driven by pressure or shaft speed, which points at rings, crankcase ventilation or the turbo centre section. Caught early it is usually a turbo or a breather issue; ignored for a year it can become a short block.
How do I tell blue smoke from white smoke on a diesel? Look at it against a dark background in daylight and smell it. Blue smoke smells of burnt oil and lingers in the air. Coolant-driven white smoke is thicker, smells faintly sweet and leaves a sticky residue on surfaces behind the truck. On a 6.0 in particular, sweet white smoke should send you to the EGR cooler and oil cooler, not to the turbo.
Can bad injectors cause blue smoke on a 6.0? Yes, and this engine has a path that most other diesels do not. HEUI injectors are actuated by engine oil, so an internal injector failure can put control oil where it does not belong. Confirm it with a scan tool by comparing injection control pressure and per-cylinder contribution against the service information values before replacing anything.
Will head studs stop blue smoke? No. Head studs address the head gasket sealing problem this engine is known for, which shows up as coolant loss, a pressurised cooling system and white smoke. They do nothing for an oil-burning symptom. Fix the actual problem first; if the heads are already coming off for another reason, studs are a reasonable upgrade to do at the same time.
Does an oil catch can fix it? A catch can reduces how much oil vapour reaches the intake, so it can make the symptom less visible. It does not lower crankcase pressure and it does not repair a worn turbo seal. Treat it as housekeeping rather than as a repair, and still measure the crankcase pressure.
Should I run a thicker oil to slow the consumption? No. On a HEUI engine the oil is a hydraulic working fluid for the injection system, and a viscosity outside the specified grade affects injection control pressure and cold-start behaviour. Use the grade the service manual specifies for the temperature range you actually run in.
