Best 6.0 Powerstroke Head Studs — ARP 250-4202 vs the Alternatives

The most important thing on this page is the part nobody wants to hear: studs do not fix a 6.0. Why the 6.0 lifts head gaskets in the first place
The 6.0L Powerstroke uses four head bolts per cylinder. Its successor, the 6.4L, uses six. That difference is not a coincidence — it is Navistar admitting the clamp load on the 6.0 was marginal for the cylinder pressure the engine makes.
From the factory those four fasteners are torque-to-yield (TTY) bolts: they are deliberately stretched past their elastic limit during the final angle-torque stages, which gives a consistent clamp load exactly once. They are single-use. They cannot be retorqued, and re-installing a used set after any disassembly is one of the reliable ways to end up back under the hood.
Now add the failure chain that defines this platform:
- The factory oil cooler is a stacked-plate unit sitting in the valley under the intake, and it plugs — with residual casting sand from the block and with degraded coolant deposits.
- A plugged oil cooler starves the EGR cooler of coolant flow.
- The starved EGR cooler overheats and ruptures, dumping coolant into the intake or exhaust stream.
- Coolant loss and combustion gas in the cooling system push cylinder pressure and temperature past what four TTY bolts can hold.
- The head gasket lifts.

What a stud actually changes
A bolt threads into the block while it is being torqued, so a portion of your torque wrench reading is consumed by thread friction that varies bolt to bolt. A stud is installed into the block first, hand-tight or to a light spec, and then the nut is torqued against the stud. The stud is loaded in near-pure tension. The practical results:
- More consistent clamp load cylinder to cylinder, because the friction variable moves to a nut-and-washer interface you can control with the supplied assembly lubricant.
- Higher clamp load available, because the stud material is stronger than the OE TTY bolt.
- Reusable. A stud kit can come apart and go back together at spec. TTY bolts cannot.
- Cleaner thread engagement in the block, since the stud is installed once and stays.
What studs do not do: they do not repair an out-of-flat head, they do not seal a cracked head, they do not compensate for a deck that was never cleaned properly, and they do not lower cylinder pressure. Sealing is a system — fastener, gasket, surface finish, and flatness — and studs are one of the four.

How to choose — a three-question filter
Question 1: Is the truck apart, or are you deciding whether to open it?
If the heads are coming off for any reason — gasket failure, an EGR cooler job that requires it, a rebuild — studs are effectively free relative to the labor already committed. Buy them. The marginal cost of the fastener upgrade over a fresh set of TTY bolts is a rounding error against the hours.
If the truck is together and healthy, "preventive studs" is a much weaker argument than people online make it. You cannot install head studs on a 6.0 without removing the heads. There is no one-at-a-time swap on this engine. A preventive stud job is a full head gasket job you chose to do. The higher-value preventive spend on a healthy 6.0 is the oil cooler and EGR cooler, not the fasteners — because those are what will lift the gasket in the first place.
Question 2: How much cylinder pressure are you actually making?
- Stock or stock-plus-tune, stock turbo, towing: ARP 250-4202. This is the answer for most trucks on the road, and the CA625+ upgrade will not show up in any way you can measure.
- Tuned hard, upgraded VGT or a drop-in charger, aggressive timing: still ARP 250-4202 for most builds. Spend the difference on the oil cooler, EGR solution, and a lift pump instead.
- Compounds, high boost, race fuel, competition use: this is where CA625+ starts to make sense — you are into cylinder pressures where fastener fatigue life, not initial clamp load, is the limiter.
Question 3: Is the block deck and are the heads machinable and flat?
Ask this before you buy fasteners. Studs pull harder on surfaces that must be flat and correctly finished to seal an MLS gasket. If the heads are going to a shop, have them checked for flatness and cracks in the same visit. A resurfaced head on a fresh MLS gasket with new studs seals; a warped head with the best studs on the market does not. Budget for the machine work as part of the job, not as a surprise.
The parts that go with the studs
A stud kit is one line on an order that should have several. When the heads are off a 6.0, the following are either mandatory or so cheap relative to re-entry that skipping them is a mistake:
- MLS head gaskets — the current-spec updated gasket, not whatever was on the shelf. Browse head gaskets.

Installing them — the order that matters
Full torque figures and angle stages are supplied by ARP with the kit and by Ford in the service procedure, and they are the numbers that govern. What follows is the sequence and the judgment calls, not a substitute for those instructions.
- Decide cab-off or in-chassis before you start. Cab-off gives access that turns a brutal job into a manageable one and is what most shops quote. In-chassis is possible and is done regularly, but it costs time and skinned knuckles and makes it harder to keep debris out of the cylinders.
- Clean the block deck and bolt holes properly. Every threaded hole must be chased and blown out. Fluid or debris trapped at the bottom of a blind hole gives a false torque reading and can crack the block. This is the single most-skipped step in a failed repeat job.
- Check flatness and send the heads out if there is any doubt. MLS gaskets are less forgiving of surface irregularity than the old composite gaskets. Confirm the required surface finish with your machinist.
- Install the studs into the block hand-tight, per ARP's instruction — do not torque studs into the block like bolts. Confirm the thread-in depth and whether the kit specifies a light install torque.
- Use ARP's supplied assembly lubricant on the nut and washer faces, not motor oil. ARP's torque specs assume their lubricant. Substituting changes the friction coefficient and therefore the actual clamp load at the same wrench reading.
- Torque in the specified sequence, in the specified stages, working from the center outward per the pattern in the instructions. Do not jump to final torque in one pass.
- Re-check per the instruction sheet. Some procedures call for a settle-and-recheck cycle.

FAQ
Do I have to remove the heads to install head studs on a 6.0 Powerstroke? Yes. There is no one-fastener-at-a-time procedure on this engine. Installing studs means a full head gasket job, which is why studs are almost always installed during a repair rather than as a standalone preventive measure.
Will head studs stop my 6.0 from blowing head gaskets? Not by themselves. Studs raise clamp load, but a plugged oil cooler and a failing EGR cooler are what push cylinder pressure and temperature past the gasket's limit. Studs plus a fixed cooling chain works. Studs alone buys time at best.
Is the ARP Custom Age 625+ kit worth it over the 250-4202? On a stock-turbo or mildly tuned truck, no — you will not be able to measure the difference. Can I reuse my old TTY head bolts if they look fine? No. Torque-to-yield bolts are stretched past their elastic limit by design and deliver a correct clamp load exactly once. They are single-use regardless of appearance.
