The 6.4L Power Stroke, built for the 2008 through 2010 Super Duty, is a very different animal from the 7.3 and 6.0 that came before it. Both of those older engines used a hydraulically actuated fuel system, which meant a second high-pressure oil pump fired the injectors and the lubrication system was doing double duty. The 6.4 moved to a high-pressure common rail fuel system. Fuel pressure comes from a dedicated high-pressure fuel pump, not from engine oil.
That change simplifies the oil system's job but does not make it easy. On a 6.4 the oil pump still has to feed:
- Main and rod bearings across a heavily loaded compound-turbocharged V8.
- Piston cooling jets, which spray the underside of the pistons and are a large share of total flow.
- Both turbochargers in the compound arrangement, where bearing survival depends on clean, cool oil at pressure.
- The valvetrain, including the hydraulic lash adjustment and roller followers in this pushrod, four-valve-per-cylinder head design.
Lose flow to any of those and you do not get a slow decline. You get a turbo or a rod. Because so much of a 6.4's oil budget goes to piston cooling and turbo bearings, this engine is less tolerant of marginal pressure than a naturally aspirated gas V8. That is the argument for treating the pump as a serious part rather than a commodity.
Why 6.4 oil pressure complaints usually are not the pump
Before you buy anything, be honest about what you are chasing. The 6.4 has a specific, well-documented reason for oil that stops behaving like oil: fuel dilution driven by diesel particulate filter regeneration.
To burn soot out of the filter, the engine injects extra fuel late in the cycle to raise exhaust temperature. Some of that fuel gets past the rings and ends up in the sump. A truck that does short trips, heavy idling or stop-start work regenerates often and never fully burns it back out. The result is oil thinner than the engine was designed around, carrying soot that abrades at the same time. Diluted oil reads as low pressure, especially hot at idle. A new pump does not fix it.
Work through the cheap and reversible causes first:
- Oil condition. Pull a sample. Fuel-thinned oil smells like diesel and reads thin. Stretched intervals on a truck that regenerates constantly can explain the gauge on their own.
- Filter and oil cooler. A restricted filter or a soot-plugged cooler changes what the engine sees downstream, and the 6.4 cooler is a known collector of debris.
- The pickup tube and screen. Sludge and soot accumulate at the screen on neglected engines. This is the most common "bad pump" that turns out not to be.
- Sensor and gauge. Confirm real pressure with a mechanical gauge at the correct port. Dash gauges on these trucks are not a measurement.
- Bearing clearance. A worn engine bleeds pressure everywhere. A new pump pushes more oil through the same open clearances and buys you very little.
Only after all of that is clear does the pump itself deserve suspicion. OEM versus aftermarket: what actually separates them
There is no magic in an oil pump. It is a housing, a set of gears or rotors with tight clearances, and a pressure relief valve. Quality lives in the machining and the metallurgy, not the marketing.

The practical answer for most 6.4 owners: a quality aftermarket pump from a recognized manufacturer is a sound choice, and OEM earns its premium when the truck is a work asset where a second teardown costs more than the price difference. What is never worth it is the cheapest unbranded pump on offer. The labour dwarfs the part cost either way, so the savings on a bad pump are illusory.
Doing the job once
Pulling the front cover on a 6.4 is not a driveway afternoon. Plan for accessory drive removal, cooling system work and careful handling of the front seal area. Most independent diesel shops quote this as a multi-hour job, more if it is combined with other front-of-engine work. A few things separate a clean job from a repeat:
- Replace the front crank seal and every gasket you disturb. Reusing a seal to save a small part cost is how the job comes back. Stock up from gaskets and seals before you start, not partway through.
- Clean the pan and pickup while you are in there. If soot or sludge caused the original complaint, a new pump feeding the same restricted screen changes nothing. Inspect and clean or replace the pickup, and check the oil pans side of the system for debris.
- Prime before first start. A dry pump on a compound-turbo engine's first crank is an avoidable risk. Follow the priming procedure in the service manual for your engine.
- Torque to the factory sequence and values in the service manual. Front cover and pump fasteners are not the place to guess. Look them up.
- Fix the reason the oil went bad. Shorten the interval, use an oil that meets the specification the engine calls for, and change driving or idling habits that force constant regeneration. Reference oil, coolant and additives for spec-compliant options, and confirm the specification in your owner's manual.
