If you tow, idle for long stretches, run dusty job sites, make a lot of short trips, or spend meaningful time in stop-and-go traffic, you are on the severe-duty schedule. Most 6.7 owners are, and a good many of them are following the normal one.
That single decision changes every interval on the list. The four items that actually protect the engine
1. Fuel filtration - both of them, on time, every time
This is the single most important line on the schedule and the one most often done wrong. The 6.7 Power Stroke runs two fuel filters: a chassis-mounted filter along the frame rail and a second filter in a housing under the hood. They are serviced as a pair. Replacing one and leaving the other is not a fuel filter change, and a shop that quotes you for a single filter is quoting the wrong job.
Why it matters more here than on an older diesel: the high-pressure fuel system on this engine operates at pressures that leave no margin for particulate or water. Contamination that a 1990s mechanical injection pump would have shrugged off will score modern pumping elements, and when a high-pressure pump on a common-rail system fails, it can send metal debris downstream through the rail, the lines and every injector. 2. Both cooling systems - including the one you have never touched
The 6.7 Power Stroke has two separate coolant circuits. There is the primary system that cools the block and heads, and there is a secondary low-temperature circuit that handles the charge air cooler and other heat loads on the induction and fuel side. They have separate reservoirs. They have separate fill and service procedures.
Large numbers of these trucks have had the primary system serviced for a decade while the secondary circuit was never opened, because the owner - and sometimes the shop - did not know it was there. A neglected secondary circuit that runs low or degrades takes charge air temperatures with it, and heat is what shortens the life of EGR coolers, injectors and turbo hardware on this platform.
Check both reservoirs at every oil change. Service both on the intervals in the manual, using the coolant specification the manual names - the two circuits do not necessarily call for identical fluid, and this is not a place to substitute by colour. 3. Oil and filter, on the severe schedule, with the right spec oil
Diesel engine oil on a modern emissions engine is doing more than lubricating. It is carrying soot, protecting a turbo fed by hot exhaust, and living with fuel dilution from post-injection events during regeneration. Extended drains on a truck that tows or idles are how you end up with a sooted, sheared, diluted sump.
Use the oil specification Ford calls out for your model year - not a generic "diesel oil" - and match the viscosity grade in the manual, which has changed across this engine's life. If the truck has an oil life monitor, treat it as a ceiling rather than a target, and shorten it if your duty cycle is hard. Send a used oil sample out occasionally if you tow heavy; it costs very little and it reveals fuel dilution and coolant intrusion long before a warning light does.
4. Soot and emissions management - by how you drive, not just by parts
The DPF, the EGR system and the SCR/DEF system on this engine are maintenance items whether the schedule frames them that way or not.
Let regenerations finish. A truck that gets shut off mid-regen, over and over, accumulates soot it never burned off, loads the filter, drives more frequent regens, and puts more fuel dilution into the oil each time. Short-trip use is the classic 6.7 killer for exactly this reason.
Keep DEF quality good - store it properly, do not let it sit for a year in a jug in a hot shed, and buy it in quantities you will actually use. Contaminated or degraded DEF produces SCR faults and derates.

What people get wrong
Treating this like an older diesel. The 7.3 tolerated dirty fuel and long drains in a way this engine does not. The tolerances, the operating pressures and the emissions hardware are all different.
Looking for spark plugs or ignition parts. There are none. This is a compression-ignition engine. Glow plugs assist cold starts and warm-up; they are not an ignition system, and a glow fault does not cause a running misfire on a hot engine.
Extending drains because the oil "still looks fine". Diesel oil looks black almost immediately. Colour tells you nothing. Interval and duty cycle tell you everything.
