The low-pressure lubrication pump is a gerotor-style pump driven directly off the crankshaft snout at the front of the engine, behind the front cover. It does what an oil pump does on any engine: pulls oil from the pan through the pickup and pushes it through the filter and the galleries to the bearings, the turbocharger and the valvetrain. When it fails, you have a lubrication problem, and the engine tells you with low oil pressure on the gauge.
The high-pressure oil pump (HPOP) sits in the engine valley and does something no gasoline engine asks of an oil pump. The 7.3 uses HEUI injection — hydraulically actuated, electronically controlled unit injectors. The injectors are fired by high-pressure engine oil, not by a mechanical cam lobe and not by a high-pressure fuel rail. The HPOP takes lubrication-circuit oil and raises it to the working pressure the injectors need. For the lubrication pump, the honest answer is that this is a low-drama purchase. The design is simple, it is not a high-failure-rate item on a well-maintained 7.3, and there is no meaningful performance gain available from a different pump on a stock or lightly modified truck.
What actually separates a good replacement from a bad one:
- Rotor material and machining quality. Clearances inside a gerotor set determine how much pressure the pump holds at hot idle. Loose tolerances are what leave you with a low-pressure complaint that never quite goes away.
- Whether the kit includes the pickup, the o-rings and the front cover seals. Getting to this pump means front cover work. Buying the pump alone and discovering you are short a seal is the expensive version of this job.
- Whether the manufacturer publishes an application list that names your year and build. If a listing will not tell you what it fits, that is the answer.

A few points that get missed:
A performance HPOP does not fix a stock truck. If the injectors are stock, extra pump volume buys nothing. The stock pump was matched to the stock injectors, and the IPR simply regulates away what the engine does not need. Not every 7.3 takes the same HPOP. Confirm the current part number against the manufacturer catalogue using your VIN and build date before ordering. This is the number one cause of a returned pump.
Rule out the cheap causes first. A great many pumps get replaced for symptoms the pump did not cause.
Diagnose before you buy
The HPOP is an expensive part to replace on a hunch, and the 7.3 gives you the data to avoid that.
- Read injection control pressure with a scan tool. The PCM reports ICP live. Watch it during cranking and at idle. A pump that cannot build and hold pressure looks very different from a system that builds pressure and then loses it.
- Rule out leaks in the high-pressure oil circuit. The branch tubes and their o-rings that carry high-pressure oil to each cylinder head are a well-known leak point on this engine. A leak there bleeds off pressure the pump is genuinely making, and produces exactly the cold hard-start complaint people blame on the pump.
- Check the IPR valve and its screen. The regulator meters pressure to the heads. A sticking or contaminated IPR mimics a failing pump closely.

- Confirm oil level, viscosity and condition. HEUI injection is unforgiving of thick, sheared or contaminated oil, especially cold. Use the viscosity the service manual specifies for your climate.

What the job takes
Access to the HPOP means removing the turbocharger and the intake plumbing to get into the valley. Most shops quote this as a meaningful half-day-plus job rather than an hour or two, and those labour hours are a real part of the decision — it is worth fitting a new or properly remanufactured pump rather than the cheapest one available, because you are paying that access cost either way.
The low-pressure pump is front-of-engine work: accessory drive, damper and front cover. Different job, different tools, same logic on parts quality. Torque every fastener in the factory sequence to the value in the service manual for your year and application; do not carry figures over from another engine.
