Aluminium and iron expand at different rates, so the joint has to survive a constant scrubbing motion every heat cycle for the life of the engine. The factory design handles that fine at stock cylinder pressure. It is not a fragile engine, and a stock, healthy, properly cooled LB7 can run its whole service life without anyone touching a head gasket.

What changes the equation is added cylinder pressure. Turn up the boost and the fuelling and peak pressure in the bore rises faster than anything else in the system. At some point that pressure momentarily exceeds the clamp load the head fasteners are applying at the fire ring, the head lifts by a fraction of a thousandth, combustion gas escapes past the ring, and the gasket is finished. It usually shows first at one cylinder, often between two cylinders where the clamping is thinnest.

Because the failure mechanism is clamp load rather than gasket quality, replacing a lifted gasket with an identical gasket and identical fasteners on a truck making the same power will get you the same result. That is the single most important thing to understand before you shop.

The secondary causes are worth ruling out too. A cooling system that has been running hot, an overheat event, a head that has been shaved before, a deck that was never checked for flatness, or a coolant system that has lost its pressure cap and been boiling locally — any of these can finish a gasket at stock power.

Symptoms that actually point at the head gasket

Diagnose before you buy. On a diesel, a lifted head gasket has a distinct signature that separates it from an injector problem — and on an LB7, injector problems are far more common than gasket problems.

  • Coolant loss with no external leak. The level drops, the ground stays dry, and nothing shows on a pressure test held cold.
  • A cooling system that pressurises fast. Combustion gas entering the jacket will build pressure in the overflow bottle within a few minutes of a cold start, well before the engine is at temperature. That is the classic tell.
  • Combustion gases in the coolant. A chemical block tester drawing vapour off the coolant surface is the cheap, decisive check. Do it before you commit to a teardown.
  • Coolant pushed out of the reservoir under load. Often the first thing an owner notices after a tune.
  • White vapour that smells of coolant, or a cylinder that will not build compression.

What is not diagnostic on an LB7: fuel in the oil, a rising oil level, a rough idle, or a hard hot start. Those point at the injectors, which sit under the valve covers on this engine and are a completely different job. Confirm what you are chasing before the cab comes off.

What "best" means when you are buying the set

There is no single part number that is universally correct, so judge candidates on these criteria instead.

Multi-layer steel construction. MLS is the correct technology for an aluminium-head-on-iron-block diesel. Multiple thin stainless layers with embossed beads around each bore let the joint move with the differential expansion instead of being crushed by it, and the beads act as springs that maintain sealing pressure as the joint cycles. Composite or graphite-faced gaskets have no business on this engine.

Correct thickness for your build. Head gasket thickness sets piston-to-head clearance and, with it, the effective compression ratio. If the heads or deck have been resurfaced, or if the engine is a built short block, the correct thickness may not be the stock service thickness. Check whether your application calls for a thickness selected by measured piston protrusion, and confirm the answer in the service manual before ordering rather than assuming the standard service gasket is right.

Left and right are not the same part. The two banks take different gaskets. Order in pairs and check the handedness of each before it goes on the deck.

Fire ring treatment. Some gaskets add a stainless wire or a raised stopper layer at the bore to concentrate clamp load exactly where combustion pressure attacks. On a high-output LB7 this is worth having, provided the head and deck finish is good enough to suit it.

Two things almost never come in either box: the head fasteners, and the coolant. Budget for both. If you are already going this deep, the surrounding seals under gaskets and seals are cheap next to a second teardown.

Bolts or studs — decide before you order the gasket

A stud is threaded into the block and torqued by a nut on top, so the fastener is not twisting while it is being tensioned — the load is cleaner and more repeatable, and quality studs are typically made from a higher-strength alloy that holds more clamp load without yielding. That extra clamp load is exactly what an LB7 making meaningful extra cylinder pressure is short of. Studs are also reusable, which matters if the heads may come off again.

The trade-off is practical, not theoretical: with studs installed, the head can no longer be lifted straight off in a confined engine bay without pulling the studs, which is one more reason cab-off is the normal way this job gets done on these trucks. Whichever you choose, chase and clean every threaded hole in the block, blow the holes out, and lubricate the fasteners exactly as the instructions specify. Torque figures in those instructions assume a particular lubricant and a particular thread condition — a dry or dirty hole gives you a reading that looks right and a clamp load that is not. Follow the tightening sequence and the staged procedure in the service manual for your application; do not improvise one.

Surface finish and flatness will decide whether it holds

This is where a good gasket gets wasted. MLS gaskets seal against surface finish rather than by conforming to it, so they need a noticeably smoother finish than the old composite gaskets tolerated. If the heads are going to a machine shop, tell the shop the engine is running an MLS gasket and have them meet the finish specification the gasket manufacturer publishes.

Check the head for flatness across its length and diagonally, not just side to side — aluminium heads that have seen heat pull in the middle. Check the block deck the same way. Clean both surfaces without gouging them: no aggressive abrasive discs on an aluminium head, no scraping that leaves a low spot. A pinpoint of old gasket left behind, or a raised nick around a bolt hole, is enough to start a leak path.

Finally, fix why it failed. If the truck is tuned, the tune is part of the repair. Frequently Asked Questions

Do LB7 head gaskets fail as a rule, the way the injectors do? No. A stock LB7 that has been cooled properly and not tuned is not a head gasket engine. Gasket failures on these trucks cluster heavily around added power and overheat events. If you have an LB7 with a fuel-in-oil complaint or a hard hot start, look at the injectors first.

Can I replace an LB7 head gasket with the cab on?
