Step one: find out whether your Gen IV has VVT

Gen IV is not one engine. It is a family that runs from plain truck iron to aluminum performance blocks, and General Motors added variable valve timing to a large share of the passenger-car and truck applications during the Gen IV production window. That single feature splits the timing catalogue in half.

A VVT Gen IV drives the camshaft through a cam phaser — a hydraulically actuated assembly that replaces the plain cam sprocket and lets the engine control module advance or retard cam timing while running. It is retained by a single centre bolt rather than the three-bolt pattern used on a non-VVT LS camshaft, and it is fed through an oil control valve at the front of the engine. A non-VVT Gen IV uses a fixed sprocket on a three-bolt cam, in the same basic layout as a Gen III.

You cannot mix those two worlds casually. A VVT camshaft will not accept a fixed sprocket, and a non-VVT camshaft has no provision for a phaser. If your engine has VVT and you intend to keep it, buy a kit that includes the phaser or is explicitly sold as phaser-compatible. If you are deleting VVT as part of a camshaft swap, you need a complete delete package — a non-VVT camshaft, the matching three-bolt sprocket and chain, the front cover and block-off arrangement appropriate to your application, and a calibration change so the module stops commanding a phaser that is no longer there.

Step two: single roller, double roller, or the factory-style set

Two honest points about double roller sets on an LS. First, a double roller is genuinely stronger, and on a build with stiff valve springs and a big lobe it is cheap insurance. Second, a double roller is physically wider, and clearance at the front cover and the surrounding front-of-engine hardware is not automatic on every LS application — verify the kit is listed for your specific block and cover rather than assuming a generic LS fitment.

A well-made single roller from a reputable manufacturer will live a very long time in a stock or mildly cammed engine. Most people who "need" a double roller actually need a chain that was installed correctly with clean, in-spec hardware.

Adjustability matters less than people expect on a factory-cam rebuild and more than people expect on a camshaft swap. If you are installing an aftermarket camshaft and intend to degree it properly, buy the adjustable set the first time. Pulling a front cover twice to gain two degrees is the definition of a false economy.

Step three: buy the rest of the job with the chain

The chain is a small part of the labour. The front of a Gen IV LS has to come apart to reach it, and there are parts in there you should not reinstall used.

  • Front crankshaft seal. It is right there, it is inexpensive, and it is the single most common cause of a "the timing job leaks now" complaint. Replace it, and replace the front cover gasket rather than reusing a squeezed one. Both live in gaskets and seals.
  • Camshaft retainer plate and hardware. Inspect the plate for wear. Cam sprocket and retainer fasteners are torque-critical and some are single-use by design — check the manufacturer catalogue for your application rather than reusing them by default.

  • Harmonic balancer. It has to come off anyway. Inspect the elastomer ring for movement and the hub for a groove worn by the old seal.
  • Coolant and accessory-drive items that were already marginal. You will not want to be back in here.

Set the camshaft and crankshaft marks in the factory-specified alignment, then torque every fastener in the sequence and to the value given in the service manual for your engine. The LS front end carries more single-use and thread-locked hardware than its reputation suggests, and guessing at a cam bolt is how a sprocket walks.

Typical shop labour on a Gen IV LS timing job runs in the several-hour range for an engine still in the vehicle, and considerably more where accessory drive, cooling stack or front-end access complicates the teardown. That labour is the same whether you fit the cheapest chain or the best one, which is the strongest argument there is for buying the good kit.

How to tell your Gen IV timing chain is actually worn

Timing chain wear on an LS is usually gradual, and the symptoms overlap with several other problems. Look for the pattern, not one clue.

  • A rattle from the front of the engine on cold start that quiets as oil pressure comes up — particularly on a VVT engine, where the phaser and its oil feed are also in play.
  • Correlation-type diagnostic trouble codes involving crankshaft and camshaft position, often intermittent long before they become permanent. A failing sensor produces the same codes, so test the engine sensors before condemning the chain.
  • Measurable slack when you rotate the crankshaft against a held cam sprocket, or visible deflection in the chain span with the cover off.
  • Wandering cam timing on a scan tool on a VVT engine, especially where commanded and actual position diverge under steady load.
  • Bright metal or chain-coloured debris in the oil filter media at a service.

None of those is proof on its own. The cover coming off is what turns a suspicion into a diagnosis, which is another argument for doing the surrounding parts while you are in there.

So which kit is the best one?

There is no single answer, but there is a clean decision path.

Stock or near-stock, keeping VVT: a complete phaser kit from a manufacturer that sells the phaser, chain and hardware together as a matched set. Piecing this together from separate sources is where fitment problems start.

Stock or near-stock, non-VVT: a factory-style or heavy-duty single roller with a fresh front seal and cover gasket. You do not need adjustability and you do not need double-row width.

Camshaft swap, staying non-VVT: an adjustable set — multi-keyway or eccentric, whichever you prefer to work with — so you can degree the cam without a second teardown.

High spring pressure, boost or sustained rpm: a double roller confirmed as listed for your specific block and cover, plus new cam and retainer hardware.

VVT delete: the delete package as a package, plus the calibration. Deleting the hardware without the tune leaves you with codes and driveability complaints.
