Why the LB7 valve cover gasket is not an ordinary gasket
The 6.6L Duramax LB7, built from the 2001 model year into 2004, put its fuel injectors under the valve covers rather than out where you can reach them. That single design decision changes how you should think about this gasket.
First, the cover has to seal two different things at once. There is the perimeter joint between the cover and the cylinder head, which keeps engine oil inside. And there is the pass-through where the injector wiring leaves the cover and meets the engine harness, which has to keep oil from wicking out along the electrical connector. A gasket set that seals one and not the other has not fixed your leak.
Second, the cover comes off far more often on this engine than on most. Anything involving the injectors, the injector return circuit, or the wiring under the cover means the gasket gets disturbed. On an engine family with a well-earned reputation for injector trouble, a lot of LB7s have had these covers off more than once. What a complete LB7 gasket kit should include
This is where buyers most often come up short. They order "valve cover gasket, 6.6 Duramax," get a bare perimeter gasket, and discover on the bench that the harness pass-through seal is torn and there is no replacement in the box.
A complete kit for this engine should cover:
- The perimeter gasket for each cover you are opening. Do both banks if the engine has miles on it and both covers are coming off anyway. Buying one gasket to save a few dollars, then repeating the job on the other side six months later, is false economy on an engine where cover removal is this involved.

Where these gaskets actually get ruined
Most repeat leaks on this engine are install problems, not part problems.
Dirty or damaged sealing surfaces. Old gasket residue, hardened silicone from a previous repair, or a gouge in the head rail will leak past any gasket. Clean with a plastic scraper and a solvent that leaves no film. Do not attack an aluminium sealing surface with a wire wheel or an aggressive metal scraper — the scratches you leave are permanent leak paths, and they are far harder to fix than the gasket you were removing.
Sealant where none belongs. A moulded gasket is engineered to seal on its own. Smearing RTV around it usually makes things worse: it holds the gasket off its seat, it squeezes into the engine where it can break loose and travel, and it turns the next removal into a scraping job. Over-torque. These fasteners are low-torque by design. Seat the loom in its clips and confirm the cover sits flat everywhere before you start any fastener.
Ignoring the real source. Oil on the outside of a head can come from the cover, from a leak higher up, from the turbo drain area, or from a previous repair that was never cleaned off. Degrease the area, run the engine, and find the actual origin before ordering parts. A clean engine tells you the truth much faster than a dirty one.
