The Coyote is what the LS swap was ten years ago: a modern, high-output, broadly available V8 that drops into classic chassis with well-developed aftermarket support. 412 hp on the low end, 480+ on the top end, Ti-VCT, aluminum block, flat torque from 2,000 RPM. Ford owners who've been watching LS-into-Fox for a decade finally have a modular answer.

The downside: the Coyote swap is more complex than an LS swap. Four-cam valvetrain, dual VCT phasers, PFDI fuel system on Gen 3+, tighter packaging in most engine bays, and a harness/PCM situation that still favors Ford Performance's Control Pack over most aftermarket alternatives. Here's the parts-list guide for a successful swap.

Engine Source Options

Gen 1 (2011-2014) — 412 hp in Mustang, 360 hp in F-150. Port-injected, hydraulic lash adjusters with finger followers, Ti-VCT. Junkyard price has come down; plentiful supply. The oil pump gear is the known weak spot — Boundary Pumps billet gear is mandatory on any Gen 1 that will see track use or aggressive tune.

Gen 2 (2015-2017) — 435 hp in Mustang. Revised heads with larger intake valves and production CNC porting, updated oil pump gear (still worth upgrading for abuse). Same port-injection fuel system as Gen 1. Best junkyard value per horsepower.

Gen 3 (2018-2023) — 460 hp in Mustang, 400 hp in F-150. PFDI (port + direct injection) — dual fuel systems, two injectors per cylinder, plasma-sprayed cylinder liners. Higher output but more complex to swap because you need both the port and DI fuel systems plumbed and controlled. 12.0:1 compression.

Gen 4 (2024+) — Dark Horse and current Mustang GT application. 480-500+ hp. Newest harness, newest ECM. Fewer donors in the salvage market; builders typically buy crate.

Crate alternatives — Ford Performance sells short-block and long-block Coyotes: - Aluminator NA — 5.0L crate, 11.0:1 compression, built for naturally-aspirated builds (see Ford Performance for the current rating and part number) - Aluminator XS — 9.5:1 compression, forged bottom end specifically for boost (confirm the current SKU) - Boss 5.0 short block — limited availability, Boss-specific internals

Crate is the answer if you want a warranty and a known-clean starting point. Junkyard is the answer if you want volume power for the money and are comfortable pulling the oil pan to check bearings and swap the oil pump gear before installing.

Transmission Compatibility

The Coyote's bellhousing pattern is the Modular pattern — NOT the SBF pattern. Any SBF-chassis transmission won't bolt up without an adapter.

Manual options:

  • Tremec T56 Magnum XL — the gold-standard Coyote manual swap trans. 6-speed, big torque capacity, available in a direct-fit Coyote bellhousing configuration.
  • Tremec TR-6060 — factory Mustang GT500 unit, harder to find standalone but supports big torque.
  • Tremec Magnum (standard T56 Magnum) — works with the right bellhousing adapter and input shaft.

Pair any manual behind a Coyote with a McLeod RXT, Centerforce DYAD, or Exedy Mach 600 twin-disc or a robust single-disc rated to your torque target. The flywheel must match the Coyote crank — 8-bolt.

Automatic options:

  • 4R75W — older 4-speed automatic, factory behind 4.6 and some 5.4 applications. Works with adapter. Simple electronic control. Budget.
  • 6R80 — the factory Coyote automatic in 2011-2017 Mustang GT. Direct bolt-up, but requires a standalone controller (Baumann, US Shift, or Ford Performance).
  • 10R80 — factory 10-speed in 2018+ Mustang GT and F-150. Powerful, tight ratios, but requires a modern controller — Ford Performance or Whipple 10R80 swap kits are the established paths. Most complex install but the best drivability.

Any automatic swap needs a matched flex-plate (8-bolt Coyote, not 6-bolt modular), torque converter sized to the engine, and proper PCM-to-TCM communication or a standalone trans controller.

Harness + PCM Options

The Coyote runs an advanced ECM (PCM in Ford nomenclature) with dozens of sensor inputs, drive-by-wire throttle, VCT oil control, and — on Gen 3+ — DI injector control. You cannot splice a Coyote into a 5.0 HO harness and call it a day.

Ford Performance Control Pack — the recommended path for most swaps. - Complete standalone harness built for a specific Coyote generation - Pre-flashed PCM with calibration for standalone operation - Fuse box, pedal, ignition switch wire - Manual-trans and automatic-trans versions exist — confirm the current Control Pack part number for your engine generation - Works with factory Ford sensors and factory Coyote components — no reinvention

Power By The Hour Performance — premium bespoke harnesses. Cleaner finish, better support for custom dash and A/C integration than the Control Pack.

BAMA Performance (aftermarket tuners) — standalone harness options with customer tuning included. Popular with owners who plan to change fuel systems, add boost, or tune aggressively from day one.

Don't reuse a factory donor harness. A pull-through harness from a Mustang GT looks like it should work, but it has body-network connectivity the standalone swap can't reproduce cleanly. Every successful Coyote swap uses a standalone harness.

Engine Mount Kits by Chassis

Mount kits adapt the Coyote's Modular pattern to the chassis:

  • Fox Body Mustang (79-93) — Maximum Motorsports, BBK, UPR. Tight clearance at the steering shaft.
  • SN95 Mustang (94-04) — direct-fit aftermarket (UPR, Maximum Motorsports). Clean install.
  • F-100 / F-150 classic truck — Trans-Dapt, BRP Hot Rods. Truck-style rear-sump pan usually required.
  • Classic Bronco (1966-77) — Heritage Series, Classic Broncos, Krawlers Edge. Well-supported.
  • Cobra Kit Car / Factory Five Mk4 / Type 65 / GTM — Factory Five engineers the chassis for Coyote.

Mount kit selection drives oil pan selection. Confirm pan fitment against the mount kit before ordering either.

Oil Pan Selection

The Coyote has multiple factory oil pans and many aftermarket options because the pan drives ground clearance and steering-rack clearance on most swaps.

  • Mustang pan (11-17, 18+) — front-sump, deep. Works in Mustang chassis only. Doesn't clear most classic chassis.
  • F-150 Coyote pan — rear-sump, shallow. Works in truck chassis. Popular for Fox-body swaps because the rear sump clears the Fox crossmember.
  • Ford Performance Control Pack pan (confirm the current part number) — swap-specific pan with baffling, designed to clear common swap chassis. The default choice for Fox / SN95 / Cobra kit swaps.
  • Boundary or Moroso aftermarket — kick-out sump pans, trap-door baffled for road race or drift.

Match the pan to the oil pump pickup. The wrong pan with the wrong pickup = starved pump on hard cornering. Verify pickup alignment after install.

Intake Manifold Clearance

The factory Coyote intake is tall — hood clearance is a constraint in low-hood chassis. Options:

  • Ford Performance Boss 302 intake — shorter runner package, modest hood clearance gain (confirm the current part number)
  • Ford Performance Cobra Jet intake — race-focused, flat profile, loses low-end torque for hood clearance (confirm the current part number)
  • Trick Flow Track Heat Coyote — aftermarket with several height profiles (confirm the current SKU)
  • VMP Performance GT500-swap plenum — for boosted builds with custom hood lines

Measure hood clearance with the mount kit installed and the engine on its mounts before ordering the intake. A one-inch difference can be the difference between a factory hood bolting down and a cowl-hood requirement.

Coolant and A/C Accessory Drive

The factory accessory drive packages alternator / PS pump / A/C / water pump / tensioner tightly. Common swap issues:

  • Power steering. Mustang uses electric PS (EPAS); F-150 uses hydraulic. Junkyard Mustang pull won't have a hydraulic pump. Run EPAS with a retrofit column, source an F-150 accessory bracket with hydraulic PS pump, or delete PS on race builds.
  • A/C compressor. Factory compressor is tight to the block; Vintage Air relocation brackets help with chassis intrusion.
  • Coolant routing. Coyote thermostat housing points straight forward — tight on classic radiator supports. Aftermarket housings (Moroso, Mishimoto) redirect flow for chassis fit.
