Why the L5P bottom end is worth doing properly

The L5P arrived in 2017 as a substantially reworked 6.6L Duramax rather than a warmed-over LML. GM went to a new cylinder head casting, a redesigned induction path, and a different high-pressure injection pump than the one the LML carried. Rated output went up when it launched and was raised again for later model years — check the published rating for your specific model year rather than assuming a number that has circulated on a forum.

What matters here is that all of that extra torque still runs through a conventional deep-skirt iron block with a forged steel crankshaft carried on cross-bolted main caps. Duramax main caps are secured by vertical bolts plus side bolts into the skirt, which is exactly why the assembly tolerates so much abuse — and exactly why the torque procedure is not something to improvise. The bearings themselves are a wear item that behaves very well until something upstream goes wrong, and then goes away quickly.

What actually kills L5P main bearings

Main bearings almost never simply wear out inside a normal service life on a stock truck. When they do go, one of a short list of causes is behind it.

Oil dilution and extended intervals. Diesel oil picks up fuel and soot. Once the film strength drops, the highest-loaded main journals — typically the centre positions — start to polish and then to lose overlay. Trucks that idle heavily, do a lot of short cold cycles, or run regenerations frequently see the oil condition degrade faster than the mileage suggests. Follow the interval published for your duty cycle, not the one printed for highway use.

Debris. A failed turbo, a scored cylinder, a disintegrating accessory, or contamination left behind from a previous repair will end up in the oil and embed in the soft bearing overlay. Embedded debris is what bearing overlay is designed to do, but past a point it scores the journal and the bearing is a symptom rather than the cause. If you find heavy debris scoring, find where it came from before reassembling.

Sustained torque well above stock. A heavy tune, large injectors and more boost load the mains far harder than the factory calibration ever did, and they do it at the low rpm where oil film thickness is least generous. This is the case where the bearing choice genuinely changes.

Low oil pressure at hot idle. Worn bearings lower pressure, and lower pressure accelerates wear. If hot idle pressure has drifted down, treat that as an instruction to inspect rather than a cosmetic annoyance.

Construction: what to actually buy

Three real choices exist, and the right one is decided by how the truck will be used.

For a stock or near-stock truck being refreshed, a quality bi-metal set that matches the factory specification is the right answer and will outlive most owners' patience. For a tuned truck making meaningfully more torque than the factory calibration, tri-metal is the conventional upgrade because it survives momentary metal-to-metal contact better. Coated bearings are worth their premium when start-up wear or transient oil starvation is a real concern in your application.

One thing not to do: mix construction types across the same crankshaft. Different linings work to slightly different clearance targets, and a mixed set gives you an unpredictable oil film across the journals.

Select-fit grading — read the codes before you order

This is the part most people skip, and it is the part that determines whether the set you bought is correct.

The Duramax bottom end is assembled at the factory using graded bearing shells. The block carries a set of codes identifying the size of each main bore, and the crankshaft carries codes identifying the size of each main journal. The correct shell for each position is a function of the two together, which is why a single "standard" set is not automatically right for your engine even when nothing has been machined.

Practically, this means:

  • Find and record the block codes and the crank codes before ordering. Photograph them. They are stamped, and stamped characters are easy to misread when you are looking at them upside down in a chassis.
  • Cross-reference those codes against the manufacturer catalogue to identify the correct grade for each position. Confirm the current part numbers rather than relying on a number from an older parts list — supersessions are common on this platform.
  • If the crank has been ground, grading no longer applies in the same way. You order the undersize the machinist specifies, and the machinist's measurements govern.

Clearance: measure it, do not assume it

A bearing set is only as good as the clearance it ends up with. Do this properly:

  • Clean everything. Oil residue, a fingerprint of assembly lube, or a bit of gasket scrap under a shell will change the reading and the result.
  • Measure the crank journals with a micrometer and the assembled bore with a dial bore gauge, both at multiple points around and along each journal. This is the method that tells you about taper and out-of-round; Plastigauge does not.
  • Plastigauge is a reasonable confirmation check when you have no better option, but it gives you one number at one point and tells you nothing about geometry. Treat it as a sanity check, not as the measurement.

Can I replace L5P main bearings with the engine in the truck? It is physically possible to roll shells out on some engines, but it is not the right way to do this job on an L5P. How do I know which grade of bearing my engine needs? Read the codes stamped on the block and on the crankshaft and cross-reference them against the manufacturer catalogue. Do not assume standard. If the engine has been apart before, verify by measurement as well — a previous rebuilder may have installed something other than what the codes indicate.

What does a spun main bearing look like on this engine?
