Understand the valvetrain before you touch it

The job, in order
This is the shape of the work. It is not a substitute for the factory service procedure, and you should have that open beside you.
1. Let the engine cool completely and disconnect the batteries. These trucks have two. Cold metal also means cleaner torque readings and gaskets that do not tear.
2. Clear access to the valve covers. Photograph the routing of every harness, line and bracket you disturb. 7. Inspect what the pushrod was working against. Check the bridge pads for step wear, the rocker tip and pivot, and the lifter. Push each valve open by hand and feel for binding.

11. Prime, start and listen. Let it idle and check for a tick, for oil at the covers, and for any new code. Re-check for leaks after a heat cycle.

Mistakes that turn a good job bad
Mixing up used parts. Reused rockers, bridges and pushrods have worn into each other. Swap them between cylinders and you reset that wear pattern in the worst way.
Replacing one bent pushrod and closing it up. If you have not explained the bend, you have not finished the job.
Improvising torque. Every value and sequence for this engine is published, and torque-plus-angle fasteners cannot be estimated by feel.
Reusing single-use hardware. Some fasteners on modern diesels are designed to stretch and are not intended to be reused. Confirm the reuse policy for every bolt you remove.
Leaving debris behind. A dropped washer or a piece of old gasket in an oil drain-back is a slow-motion engine failure, so change the oil and filter before the engine sees load.
