Why "changes with rpm" narrows things down less than you would hope

Nearly everything mechanical on a running engine changes with rpm. The useful distinction is how it changes.

A noise that occurs once per crankshaft revolution — piston, rod, wrist pin, flexplate, accessory bearing — will double in frequency when you double engine speed and generally gets louder as it goes. A noise that occurs once per camshaft revolution happens at half crank speed: that is valvetrain territory. The LB7 is a pushrod, four-valve-per-cylinder V8 with the camshaft in the block, hydraulic lifters, pushrods and rocker bridges — there is no adjustable lash and no overhead cam, so a valvetrain tick here means a lifter, a pushrod, a rocker or a bridge, not a lash setting somebody forgot.

The second question matters more than most people give it credit for. Rev the engine in neutral and note the noise. Then get it under real load — a gentle pull up a grade, or a stall against the brake. An accessory bearing does not care about load; it only cares about shaft speed. An exhaust leak and an injector-related noise both get worse under load, because cylinder pressure goes up. That single test splits the list roughly in half.

The third question is temperature. An exhaust leak at a manifold-to-head joint is usually loudest cold and quiets down as the manifold and head grow into each other. A bearing noise usually does the opposite, or does not change at all. A tick that only shows up hot and only under load is the one that deserves the most attention.


The four realistic sources on an LB7

1. Injector and combustion noise

The LB7 is a common-rail diesel. A certain amount of sharp, metallic clatter at idle is simply what a common-rail injector sounds like, and it changes character with rpm because injection timing and duration change with rpm. That baseline noise is normal.

What is not normal is a distinct, isolated knock or tick that you can localise to one cylinder. LB7 injectors are mounted under the valve covers and are the best-known weak point of this engine family. When one fails, the classic pattern is rough running at idle, a haze of white smoke that will not clear, a fuel smell in the crankcase, and an oil level that creeps up between changes. Pull the dipstick and smell it. If it smells like diesel and the level is above where you left it, stop chasing the noise and start testing injectors — you have a fuel dilution problem that will damage bearings long before the tick does.

Confirm with a scan tool rather than a screwdriver. Read the per-cylinder balance or contribution data at a stable idle and look for the outlier. A return-flow test at the injectors, performed to the procedure in the factory service information, will identify a leaking unit. If you get that far, plan on doing the set rather than a single injector — replacement parts should be matched to the current manufacturer catalogue number for your build date, and the labour on this job is the expensive part. A loose or weeping high-pressure line will also tick, and is far cheaper. Check the line nuts at the rail and at each injector for wetness or a clean, fuel-washed streak. Lines are not reusable indefinitely; if one is disturbed or damaged, replace it from the injection line range and torque it in the factory sequence to the value in the service manual.

2. Exhaust leak at the manifold, gasket or up-pipe

This is the single most common cause of a rhythmic LB7 tick, and it is the one most often misdiagnosed as an injector. An exhaust pulse escaping through a small gap produces a crisp tick that rises exactly with engine speed and gets noticeably louder under load. Cold start is when it is loudest.

Look for the evidence rather than listening for it. A leak leaves a grey or black soot trace radiating from the joint. Check the manifold-to-head flange on both banks, the manifold-to-up-pipe connection, and the bolts themselves — a broken or backed-out manifold bolt is a known failure on this engine and leaves a witness mark you can see. Bear in mind the diesel angle: there are no spark plugs, coils or plug-tube seals on this engine to blame, so a "tick near the head" on an LB7 is far more likely to be an exhaust joint than anything ignition-related.

The repair is gaskets, hardware and patience. Broken fasteners often have to be extracted, which is what turns a modest job into a long one. 3. Valvetrain

A valvetrain tick runs at half crank speed and is usually steady rather than load-sensitive. On an LB7 that means a hydraulic lifter that is bleeding down, a bent or worn pushrod, a worn rocker or a cracked rocker bridge. Long oil-change intervals, a history of fuel dilution, or an engine that sat are all things that make lifter noise more likely.

Pull a valve cover and inspect before ordering. You are looking for a rocker sitting at a different height from its neighbours, a pushrod that will not spin freely by hand, or scoring on a bridge. Replace what you find from the valvetrain range and prime new hydraulic components as the manufacturer instructs.

4. Accessory drive

Belt tensioner bearings, idler pulleys, the alternator and the vacuum pump that serves the brake booster all turn with engine speed, and all tick or rattle when their bearings give up. The tell is that the noise is completely indifferent to load. With the engine off, spin each pulley by hand and feel for roughness; check the tensioner for slop in its arm.

  3. Inspect for soot at every exhaust joint, both banks, cold.
  4. Spin the accessories by hand with the engine off.
  5. Only then pull scan data and, if it points there, a valve cover.
