Duramax LML Main Bearings: OEM vs Aftermarket
TL;DR: On a stock or mildly tuned LML that is getting main bearings because the engine is apart anyway, an OE-equivalent set is the correct choice — the factory bearing was specified around this engine's loads, its oil supply and its block. Once you add serious fuel, high boost and sustained towing, a coated or premium tri-metal set is worth the money because it survives a thin oil film better than a bare factory overlay. But the bearing set is the smallest variable in this job. What the Main Bearings Do on an LML
The LML is the 2011–2016 generation of GM's 6.6L Duramax V8 — an overhead-valve, four-valve-per-cylinder compression-ignition engine running the Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump. Being a diesel, it has no spark plugs, no ignition coils and no knock sensor, so none of the ignition-side variables that muddy a gasoline bottom-end diagnosis apply here.
The main bearings carry the crankshaft in the block. That is a different job from the rod bearings, and the difference matters when you are choosing parts:
- They react the whole load path. Every rod journal load passes through the crank into the mains and then into the block. The mains see the summed load, not one cylinder's worth.
- They feed everything downstream. Oil arrives at the main saddles first, then travels through the crankshaft's internal drillings out to the rod journals. A main bearing that is worn, mis-clearanced or installed with a misaligned feed hole starves the rods. A fair number of engines diagnosed as rod bearing failures had a main bearing problem first.
- One of them handles thrust. The thrust bearing controls fore-and-aft crankshaft movement — end play. On a truck that tows, that thrust face is loaded every time the torque converter loads and unloads. Thrust wear is the failure people forget to check.

How OE and Aftermarket Main Bearings Actually Differ
Strip out the marketing and there are four real variables.
Material stack. A bi-metal bearing is a steel back with an aluminium alloy lining. A tri-metal bearing adds a copper-lead or bronze intermediate layer under a thin soft overlay. Bi-metal designs generally carry high load and resist corrosion well; tri-metal designs generally offer better embedability and conformability, meaning small debris sinks into the soft surface instead of scoring the journal. Which family the factory specified for a given engine is an engineering decision, not a quality ranking — confirm what your engine originally used in the service data before assuming one is an upgrade over the other.
Surface coating. The upper tier of performance bearings adds a polymer or moly-based coating over the running surface. Its value is entirely in the boundary-lubrication window: the dry start before oil pressure builds, and the moment a debris event or a thinned oil film would otherwise wipe a bare overlay. On a heavily fuelled truck that works for a living, this is the single most useful upgrade available in a bearing.
Groove and oil-hole design. Main bearing sets are not symmetrical. The upper shell — the one in the block saddle — normally carries the oil feed hole and the groove that supplies the crank drillings; the lower shell in the cap is often ungrooved or only partially grooved to preserve load-carrying area. Some performance sets deliberately change groove width or profile to trade a little oil flow for a little more bearing surface. That is a legitimate design choice, but it means you cannot mix shells between sets or install a pair the wrong way round. Verify shell orientation and feed-hole alignment against the service manual during assembly.
Clearance philosophy. Standard sets restore factory clearance. Performance lines often also offer sets sized a fraction of a thousandth larger, intended for builds running thicker oil, more power and more heat. Extra clearance buys oil flow and cooling at the cost of oil pressure and film strength. Choose it only if your engine builder specifies it for your exact combination, and check the assembled result against the clearance range published in the service manual.

What Actually Decides Whether the New Set Survives

Find out what killed the first set. Bearing failure on a diesel is almost always oil-related rather than bearing-related: fuel dilution thinning the oil, stretched drain intervals, debris from an upstream failure, low oil pressure, or sustained high load on oil that had lost its film strength. Replace the parts without finding the cause and the new set follows the old one. Read the old shells before you throw them out — even wear across all journals reads differently from one hammered journal, and both read differently from scoring, which points at debris.
Measure the crank, do not assume it. Every main journal gets checked for diameter, taper and out-of-round against the factory service manual specification. If the crank is within spec, standard bearings are correct. If it is not, the crankshaft gets ground and you order the matching undersize set — this is not a place to split the difference. Replacement crankshafts are the answer when a journal is past what a grind will recover.
Check the block saddles. A block that has run a spun bearing, or one that has seen a lot of hard heat cycles, can have main bores that are out of round or out of line. Bearings installed in a distorted saddle wear on a pattern no oil choice will fix. Align-hone or align-bore work is a machine shop call, and it is far cheaper than the second teardown.
Set and record end play. Install the crank, fit the thrust bearing per the service procedure, and measure end play with a dial indicator against the specification in the manual. Too little and the thrust face is loaded constantly; too much and you have a worn thrust surface or the wrong part in your hand.
Verify clearance with the parts you are actually using. Plastigauge or a bore gauge and micrometer — either is acceptable, the bore gauge is better. Check every journal with the caps torqued in the factory sequence to the value in the service manual, using the correct fasteners. Never carry over a clearance figure from someone else's build.
Treat the fasteners as part of the bearing decision. Confirm in the service manual for your specific engine whether the main cap bolts are torque-to-yield. Many modern diesel main and rod fasteners are single-use and are installed with a torque-plus-angle procedure. A reused stretch bolt is a bearing failure waiting to happen no matter which set you bought. Where a build calls for studs, follow the stud manufacturer's own torque procedure and lubricant rather than the factory bolt value.
Assemble clean. New shells go in with clean, dry backs — no oil behind the bearing, no fingerprints, feed holes lined up, assembly lube on the running face only. Every oil gallery and crank drilling gets flushed. Prime the oil system before the first start. Which Set to Buy, by Build
- Stock or emissions-intact truck being refreshed: OE-equivalent standard set. Nothing about this application asks for more, and the factory design has the longest field record on this block.
- Tuned daily driver that tows within factory ratings: OE-equivalent or entry performance set. Spend the difference on oil analysis and a shorter drain interval instead — oil and additives are under oil, coolant and additives.
- Heavy fuel, larger turbo, sustained hot towing or competition: coated or premium tri-metal set, with main cap hardware and clearance chosen by the engine builder. This is where the coating actually pays for itself.
- Engine that spun a bearing: the bearing brand is the least of it. Budget for machine work on the crank and the block saddles first, then buy the set the finished measurements call for.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Duramax LML main bearings have a replacement interval? No. They are not a maintenance item. Main bearings are replaced when the engine is already apart, when oil analysis or an inspection turns up bearing material, or when a knock or an oil pressure problem points at the bottom end. A well-maintained LML can run its full service life on the original set.
Are aftermarket main bearings always better than the factory set? No. They are better at specific things. A coated performance set survives a thin or dirty oil film better, which matters on a heavily fuelled truck. On a stock engine with a healthy oil system, the factory design is exactly what the engine was developed around, and paying more buys capability you will not use.
Can I replace LML main bearings without pulling the crankshaft? Rolling in main bearings with the crank in place is done, but it is not the honest way to do this job.
