First, understand what the throttle valve actually does on a diesel

Three reasons, and all three are emissions and driveability functions rather than power functions:
- Driving EGR flow. Closing the throttle valve partially creates a pressure drop across the intake, which helps pull exhaust gas into the intake tract when the pressure differential would otherwise not favour it.
- Smooth shutdown. Cutting intake air as the engine stops kills the compression shudder you would otherwise feel through the truck. That gentle stop is the throttle valve doing its job.

What it looks like when it is going
The symptoms cluster around the three jobs listed above, which makes them fairly easy to read once you know what you are looking at.
Harsh or shuddering shutdown. The engine stops with a shake instead of settling quietly. This is often the very first sign, and it is the one most owners dismiss. If the valve can no longer close cleanly on shutdown, it is telling you the plate is binding.
A throttle actuator or throttle position fault. The controller commands a position, reads back something different, and sets a code. The exact code number depends on model year and calibration, so read it with a scan tool rather than assuming. Where possible, watch commanded versus actual throttle position on a live data stream while the engine runs. A gap between commanded and actual that widens as the valve warms up is a coked bore, not a bad sensor.
Reduced power or a limp condition. If the controller cannot trust the throttle valve, it will protect the engine. This is usually accompanied by a stored fault rather than appearing on its own.
EGR-related complaints with no obvious EGR fault. Because the throttle valve helps drive EGR flow, a valve stuck partly open can produce insufficient-flow complaints from a perfectly healthy EGR valve. Chasing the EGR valve first is a common and expensive detour.

- Inspect during other intake work. Any time the intake is open for another repair, look at the throttle valve. Five minutes of inspection beats a roadside limp mode.
