Duramax LML Timing Chain Kit Buying Guide
TL;DR: The 6.6L Duramax LML does not have a timing chain, and it does not have a timing belt. The camshaft, the oil pump and the high-pressure fuel pump are all turned by a gear train at the front of the block, behind the front cover. So there is no chain, no tensioner and no guides to buy, and no mileage interval at which you replace them. Why there is no LML timing chain to buy
Every 6.6L Duramax from the LB7 through the L5P uses a gear-driven camshaft. A gear on the nose of the crankshaft turns an idler gear, the idler turns the camshaft gear, and the same gear train drives the engine's high-pressure injection pump. On the LML that pump is the Bosch CP4.2, which is why front-drive work and fuel system work so often end up on the same repair order.
This matters because of how people arrive at the question. A gasoline V8 owner who searches "timing chain kit" is buying a genuine wear item on a schedule. A Duramax owner searching the same phrase has usually been told by a parts counter, a forum thread or a search box that the engine has one. It does not. A gear train has no stretch, no slack to take up and no plastic guide to crack. Assembled correctly and kept in oil, it is a lifetime component.
That is good news for the truck, and it changes what you should be spending money on. The pattern is obvious once it is laid out. Five of those seven parts are inspection-driven. Two of them - the cover sealing set and the front crank seal - are consumables you replace on principle, because they cost a fraction of the labour it takes to reach them. Shop the sealing side in gaskets and seals and the damper side in harmonic balancers and dampers.
What sends an LML front cover apart in the first place
Three jobs account for most of it.
A front cover or crank seal leak. This is the common one. Oil weeping from the front of the block, running down the damper and getting flung across the front of the engine. It is a sealing repair, not a drive repair, but the cover has to come off to fix it properly, and that is your opportunity to inspect the gear train while you are in there.
A CP4.2 fuel pump failure. When a CP4 comes apart internally it sends metal through the fuel system. That is a fuel-side job - pump, rails, lines, injectors, tank cleanup - but the drive side brings the front of the engine into the conversation on a thorough repair. In that scenario the fuel injector and fuel system parts are the bulk of the bill, not the front drive.
A noise complaint. A whine or a growl from the front of the engine that tracks with engine speed. This is the one case where the gear train itself is genuinely a suspect, and it deserves proper diagnosis before anything is ordered.
Diagnosing gear-train noise before you order parts
A gear-driven front end is not silent. Duramax engines have an audible drive whine from new, and a truck that has always made that noise is not telling you anything. What matters is change: a noise that appeared, a noise that got louder, or a noise with a rough or knocking quality rather than a steady whine.
Work through the cheap possibilities first, because the front of a Duramax is a crowded place and most whines are not the gear train:
- Belt-driven accessories - water pump, tensioner, idler pulleys, alternator, air conditioning compressor. Pull the belt and run the engine briefly to see whether the noise leaves with it.
- The vacuum pump and any other belt- or engine-driven pump on the front of the engine.
- The harmonic balancer. Look for a rubber ring that has walked out of position, or a visible wobble at idle.
- The turbocharger, which people frequently misattribute to the front of the engine.
If the noise survives all of that, the front cover comes off and the gear train gets measured rather than eyeballed. Backlash between each pair of gears is checked with a dial indicator against the specification in the GM service manual for your engine, and the idler bearing is checked for radial play and for roughness by hand. Replace against a measurement, not against a hunch. A gear that measures in spec and shows no tooth damage does not need to be in your cart.
Buying the kit: what to look for
Buy the sealing parts as a set. A front cover reseal on an LML is deep in the truck. The cooling stack, the fan, the damper and the cover all come off, and shops typically quote this as a multi-hour job rather than a quick one. Going back in for a seal you decided to reuse is the expensive mistake, not the seal itself.
Confirm the part number against the manufacturer catalogue before you order. The LML ran from the 2011 to the 2016 model years and shares a great deal with the LMM before it and the L5P after it - but not everything, and not the emissions-related hardware. Verify against your VIN rather than against "6.6 Duramax".
Be sceptical of anything sold to you as an LML timing chain kit. If a listing offers a chain, guides or a tensioner for this engine, the listing is wrong about the engine. That is a fair signal about the rest of what the seller knows.
Do not reuse the front crank seal. It rides on a surface the damper has been turning against for the life of the truck. Inspect that surface carefully while it is exposed - a groove worn into it will kill a new seal.
Torque to the manual, in sequence. Front cover fasteners, damper hardware and gear retention hardware each have a specified procedure, and several are torque-plus-angle rather than a single value. Keep it clean. The gear train lives in engine oil and the front cover is an open doorway while it is off. Anything that falls in has a direct path into the pan.
