Duramax LMM Main Bearings Replacement: Tools, Torque and Sequence

Why an LMM eats main bearings in the first place
Replacing the bearings without understanding why they failed guarantees you do this twice. On the LMM specifically, four causes account for most of what comes across a bench.
Fuel dilution of the engine oil. The LMM was the first Duramax generation built around a diesel particulate filter, and DPF regeneration uses late post-injection events to raise exhaust temperature. Some of that fuel gets past the rings and into the sump. Diluted oil loses viscosity, and a bearing designed to run on a full oil film starts running closer to metal-on-metal. Short-trip trucks that interrupt regens repeatedly are the worst offenders. If the oil coming out of the engine you are about to rebuild smells strongly of diesel or reads thin, that is your root cause and the rebuild alone will not fix it.
Extended or missed oil changes. Diesel oil carries a heavy soot load by design. Past the additive package's useful life, that soot becomes an abrasive and polishes bearing overlay off the shells.
Oil supply problems. A worn oil pump, a collapsed pickup screen, or a cooler restriction starves the mains before it starves anything you can hear. Inspect the oil pump and pickup as part of the same job — reusing a marginal pump behind fresh bearings is a false economy.
Detonation and over-fuelling from tuning. Aggressive tunes raise peak cylinder pressure, and that pressure lands on the rod and main bearings. A truck with a high-horsepower tuning history deserves a hard look at the crank journals, not just new shells.

Removal and inspection sequence
1. Get the engine out and drained. Follow the factory removal procedure for the truck. Drain the oil into a clean pan and look at it — metal in the pan tells you the crank is likely damaged and changes the scope of the job before you spend money on parts.
2. Mount the engine and invert it. Remove the oil pan, pickup and lower-end hardware, and expose the main caps.
3. Photograph and mark everything before it moves. Main caps are position- and direction-specific. They are machine-line-bored with the block, so a cap that goes back in a different position or turned around leaves you with a bore that is not round. Verify the factory position markings and add your own before loosening a single fastener.
4. Loosen in the correct order. Main caps come apart in a defined sequence — generally the reverse of the tightening sequence, working from the outside in, releasing the cross-bolts before the vertical bolts. Take the specific order from the service manual rather than improvising it.
5. Keep every bearing shell in order. Lay them out in a labelled tray in the exact position and orientation they came from. The wear pattern across the set is your diagnosis: even wear across all mains points at oil quality or oil supply, while one hammered position points at that journal, that cap, or a bent crank.
6. Measure the crankshaft. Each main journal gets measured for diameter, taper and out-of-round at multiple points and angles, then compared against the manufacturer's published service limits. A crank outside limits goes to a machine shop for grinding and gets undersize bearings, or it gets replaced from crankshafts. This is the decision point of the entire job and it cannot be made by eye.
Bearing selection: read the grade markings
Duramax blocks and crankshafts carry factory size-grade markings used to select the correct bearing thickness at each position. Those markings exist because production tolerances are held to a range rather than a single number, and the bearing is what closes the gap. Find them, record them position by position, and cross-reference against the bearing manufacturer's current selection chart for the set you are buying.
Do not assume a reground or replacement crank carries the same grades as the original — it will not necessarily. Do not assume all main positions take the same grade. And confirm the current part number for the set against the manufacturer's catalogue before ordering, because bearing part numbers get superseded, and a superseded number often reflects a material or clearance revision you actually want. Installation, torque and sequence
The mechanical steps are straightforward. The discipline is what matters.
Clean the housing bores and cap faces bone dry. No oil, no assembly lube, no residue behind the shell. A bearing relies on crush against a clean bore to transfer heat into the block; oil trapped behind the shell insulates it and the bearing runs hot.
Seat the shells by the tang and confirm the thrust position. The thrust bearing goes in one specific main position on this engine — identify it from the manual before you start dropping shells in. A thrust washer or flanged shell in the wrong position or facing the wrong way is a rebuild-ending error that will not show up until the engine will not turn or end play is gone.
Lubricate the bearing face, not the back, using the assembly lube specified by the bearing manufacturer.
Torque in the factory sequence, in the factory stages, to the factory values. The Duramax main cap fastening procedure is multi-stage and includes rotation angle, and the vertical bolts and the outer cross-bolts are tightened in a defined order. Take the sequence, the stage values and the angles from the factory service manual for the exact engine. Confirm at the same time whether your fasteners are torque-to-yield and therefore single-use — if the procedure calls for angle torque on them, treat replacement as the default. Check rotation after every cap. Torque one cap, turn the crank by hand, then move to the next. If it goes tight you find out immediately and you know exactly which cap caused it. Discovering a bind after every cap is torqued means starting over.
Confirm clearance and end play before you close it up. Plastigage the mains to confirm the clearance you actually achieved, and set a dial indicator on the crank nose to measure end play against the service specification. Both figures come from the manual for the engine.
Replace every seal and gasket you disturbed — rear main seal, front cover seal, oil pan gasket and pickup O-ring. Pulling them from gaskets and seals alongside the bearings saves a second teardown over a two-dollar O-ring.
What this costs in shop labour
Expect a shop to quote this as an engine removal, disassembly, machine work and reassembly package — commonly in the 20 to 40 hour range for labour alone, depending on how much of the truck has to come apart, whether the crank needs grinding, and whether the job expands once the pistons are visible. In practice most LMM bearing jobs become full rebuilds, because an engine that has spun a bearing has usually damaged something else, and the labour to go back in later dwarfs the parts cost of doing it all now.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you replace Duramax LMM main bearings without pulling the engine? No, not correctly. The LMM uses a deep-skirt block with cross-bolted main caps, and the caps cannot be located, sequenced or angle-torqued properly with the engine in the truck.
