Start with the camshaft, not the lifter
The FE family - the 332, 352, 360, 390, 406, 427 and 428 - is a pushrod, overhead-valve big block. The lifter rides directly on the camshaft lobe, and the lobe profile is ground for one specific type of follower. That is why "which lifter should I buy" is nearly always answered by "which cam is in the block."
Three combinations exist, and they do not cross over:
- A hydraulic flat tappet cam requires hydraulic flat tappet lifters.
- A solid (mechanical) flat tappet cam requires solid flat tappet lifters and a valve lash setting.
- A roller cam - factory-style or a retrofit billet core - requires roller lifters.
Putting a flat tappet on a roller lobe, or the reverse, destroys the cam quickly and usually takes the lifter bores' oil supply and the oil pump pickup with it in metal debris. If you did not personally install the camshaft that is in the engine, pull an inspection cover and identify it before ordering anything from the lifters collection.
The second half of that rule is just as important: a used lifter never goes back on a new lobe. A flat tappet lifter and its lobe wear into each other as a matched pair, and a lifter that has taken a wear pattern from one lobe will not survive on another. New cam, new lifters. Always.

There are also solid roller setups for serious race applications. They are outside the scope of a buying guide because the valvetrain around them - springs, retainers, rockers, oiling - has to be engineered as a package rather than shopped part by part.
Why flat tappet break-in is the whole ballgame on an FE
The FE was designed in an era when engine oil carried a much heavier anti-wear additive package than most current API service oils do. The flat tappet interface is the highest-pressure sliding contact in the engine, and it depends on that additive film to survive the first minutes of life before the lobe and lifter face have burnished to each other.
That is the mechanism behind almost every "I wiped a lobe on my fresh FE" story. It is rarely a bad part. It is usually one of:
- The engine was fired on an oil without an adequate anti-wear additive package.
- Assembly lube was not applied to every lobe and lifter face.
- The engine did not hold the elevated, varied break-in rpm the cam grinder specifies, because it had a fuel or ignition problem that had to be sorted out at idle.
- Valve spring pressure over the nose exceeded what the flat tappet interface could carry.
- The lifters were not pre-soaked and rotated freely in their bores before assembly.
None of that is exotic. It is a checklist. Get the ignition timing and the carburettor set up before the engine ever turns over, have the break-in oil and a supplemental anti-wear additive in the sump, and do not shut the engine down mid-break-in to chase a leak. What actually changes when you go retrofit hydraulic roller
A retrofit roller kit is the most common upgrade an FE builder considers, and it is a genuinely good one - but it is three decisions, not one.
Clearance. Retrofit roller lifters are held from rotating by a tie bar or link bar between pairs. That hardware needs room inside the lifter valley and the block's lifter bore bosses. Some FE blocks need minor clearancing. Check it on the bench with the lifters in place before the engine goes together, not after.
Pushrod length. Roller lifters generally sit at a different height than the flat tappets they replace, which changes the pushrod length the engine needs. FE engines use shaft-mounted rocker assemblies, so rocker geometry is set by the shaft stand height and the pushrod. The correct move is to measure with an adjustable checking pushrod and order to that measurement, not to assume the stock length still works. Distributor gear. The distributor gear has to be compatible with the material of the camshaft it meshes with. A cast iron cam and a billet steel cam do not take the same gear. This is the single most-missed item in a retrofit roller conversion, and getting it wrong shows up as a chewed gear and metal in the oil within a few hundred miles. Confirm the correct gear material for your specific cam core against the cam manufacturer's own documentation.
Diagnosing a lifter you already have
A tick from the top of an FE is not automatically a lifter. Work through the cheap and reversible causes first:
- Cold tick that goes away with oil pressure and temperature - often a hydraulic lifter bleeding down overnight, and often normal on an older engine.
- Persistent tick at a steady rate, half engine speed - points at the valvetrain rather than an exhaust leak, which usually ticks with a sharper, more metallic edge and changes with load.
- Tick that appeared with a misfire and a code - chase the ignition and fuel side first; a dead cylinder changes valvetrain noise character.
- Tick plus low oil pressure plus metal in the filter - stop. That is a teardown, not a parts order.
An exhaust manifold or header gasket leak imitates a lifter tick convincingly, and it is far cheaper to rule out. Gaskets and seals are in the gaskets and seals collection.
If you do have a collapsed hydraulic lifter, replace the full set rather than the single unit. The rest of them have the same hours on them, and the labour to get back in there is the expensive part - shops typically quote FE top-end access in hours, not minutes, and doing it twice is the avoidable cost.

- Identify the camshaft type in the block with certainty.
- Buy the cam and the lifters from the same manufacturer as a matched set whenever you are replacing both.
- Confirm the current part number against the manufacturer catalogue for your exact FE displacement and year - FE production spanned a long run and not every component carried across.
- Check valve spring pressure against the lifter's published rating before you commit.
- For retrofit roller, verify tie-bar clearance, measure for pushrod length and settle the distributor gear question before assembly.
- Torque all valvetrain hardware in the factory sequence to the values in the service manual for your engine.
