TL;DR: A Ford FE bottom end is stout, but main bearings punish sloppy assembly harder than any other part of the build. Almost every ruined set traces back to one of five things: skipping measurement and trusting a parts-box label, mixing or flipping caps, missing the oil feed hole on a bearing shell, ignoring end play at the thrust main, or starting the engine on an oiling system that was never primed. Every torque value, stage and rotation angle for your specific FE block comes out of the factory service manual — write it down before the crank goes in, and confirm your bearing part numbers against the manufacturer catalogue for the exact journal size you measured.


The FE is not a small block, and assuming it is starts the trouble

The FE family — the 332, 352, 360, 390, 406, 410, 427 and 428 — ran from the late fifties into the mid seventies, and the blocks are not interchangeable in the ways people assume. Some FE blocks use conventional two-bolt main caps. The high-output 427 blocks use cross-bolted main caps, with fasteners entering the caps through the sides of the block skirt in addition to the vertical bolts. Those are two different assembly procedures with two different fastener sequences, and treating a cross-bolted block like a two-bolt block is how caps end up cocked in their registers.

Oiling differs too. The 427 exists in both a "side oiler" configuration, with a main oil gallery running down the left side of the block to feed the main bearings before anything else, and the more common top-oiler arrangement that prioritises the cam and valvetrain. Which one is on your stand changes what a low-oil-pressure symptom means after the rebuild, and it changes how carefully you inspect the galleries during cleanup.

The practical rule: identify the exact block casting in front of you before you order anything from a main bearing set or a full rebuild kit. "It's a 390" is not enough information to buy bearings with.


Mistake 1: buying bearings before measuring the crank

This is the single most common way a fresh set of shells gets destroyed, and it happens before a wrench is picked up. A crankshaft that has been through a machine shop at some point in the last sixty years may be standard, or it may be ground to an undersize. Bearing sets are supplied in standard and in a range of undersizes to match, and installing standard shells on a reground journal — or the reverse — produces a clearance that is either so tight the bearing seizes on first start or so loose the engine never builds pressure.

Measure, then buy:

  • Read the crank first. Reground cranks are usually stamped or etched with the undersize. Treat the stamp as a starting hypothesis, not a fact.
  • Measure every main journal with an outside micrometer, not calipers. Take readings at several points around the journal and at both ends of its width. You are looking for out-of-round and for taper, and either one sends the crank back to the machine shop rather than into the block.
  • Measure the housing bore. A block that has had caps swapped, or that has been run with a spun bearing, may not have a round main bore any more. Align-honing corrects it, but it also changes the bore, and that has to be known before bearings are selected.
  • Confirm the part number against the manufacturer catalogue for the journal size you actually measured and for your specific FE displacement and year.

If the crank is worn past what a regrind can recover, the honest answer is a replacement — browse crankshafts rather than trying to buy your way out with thicker bearings.


Mistake 2: mixing up caps, or flipping a shell

Main caps are machined in place with the block. They are not interchangeable between positions and they are not symmetrical front-to-back. Caps that arrive on your bench loose in a box are a warning sign, not a convenience.

  • Caps are normally marked with position and orientation from the factory. If the marks are gone or ambiguous, mark them yourself with a punch before anything comes apart, and keep the register faces clean.
  • On cross-bolted blocks, the side bolts and their spacers or shims belong to specific caps. Bag them per position.
  • Bearing shells have a tang that drops into a notch in the block saddle and the cap. The tang locates the shell; it does not carry load. If the tang will not sit down, the shell is in the wrong place or the saddle is dirty.
  • The upper shell and the lower shell are usually not the same part. On most engines the upper half carries the oil feed hole and often an oil groove; the lower is plain. Installing the grooved shell in the cap and the plain one in the block blocks the feed to that main and starves the rod it supplies. The bearing will look fine going together and will be blue in an hour.

Check every oil hole in the block saddle against the hole in the shell before the crank goes down. It takes a minute and it is the cheapest insurance in the build.


Mistake 3: assembling dirty, or with the wrong lubricant

Bearing shells are a soft overlay on a steel back. They embed debris rather than shrug it off, and every embedded particle becomes a high spot working against the journal.

That last one catches experienced builders. The bearing back must sit metal-to-metal against the saddle so it can conduct heat into the block. Oil on the back face is a mistake, not extra protection.


Mistake 4: guessing at torque, crush and end play

Bearing crush is what holds the shell in the bore and what makes it conform to the housing. Crush is created by torquing the cap correctly — nothing else. That means:

  • Torque the main cap fasteners in the factory sequence and in the factory stages. On most V8 blocks that sequence works from the centre main outward, but confirm it in the service manual for your engine rather than assuming.
  • Use the specified lubricant on the fastener threads and under the head. A dry bolt and an oiled bolt reach very different clamp loads at the same reading.
  • If you are fitting studs instead of bolts, follow the stud manufacturer's own torque figures and lubricant, not the factory bolt figures. Studs and their hardware live under main studs and main cap hardware.
  • On cross-bolted 427 caps, the vertical bolts and the side bolts have their own order. Getting it backwards distorts the bore.

Then check the work. Measure clearance on assembly with plastigage or, better, with a bore gauge and micrometer. Check that the crank turns freely by hand with each cap torqued in turn — if it turns freely with four caps and binds when the fifth goes on, you have found a problem before it cost you anything.

End play is not optional. Set the thrust bearing by tapping the crank fore and aft to align the thrust faces before final torque, then measure end play with a dial indicator against the snout. Too little and the thrust face wipes; too much and it hammers. The figure comes from the manual for your FE.


Mistake 5: the first thirty seconds of run time

More new bearings die at initial start-up than during assembly.

  • Prime the oiling system. Turn the pump with a priming tool and a drill until pressure registers at the gauge and oil appears at the rocker shafts. A fresh engine has empty galleries and a dry pump; cranking it on the starter to build pressure is a gamble with a set of bearings on the table.
  • Do not reuse a tired oil pump behind fresh bearings. Inspect or replace the pump and pickup as part of the job — see oil pumps and pickups.
  • Fit new seals and gaskets, and fit the rear main seal in the correct orientation. FE blocks use a two-piece rear main seal, and early engines used a rope-type wick. Whichever your block takes, the lip direction and the offset of the seal halves matter. Parts are under gaskets and seals.
  • Watch the gauge, not the exhaust. If pressure does not come up almost immediately on start, shut it down. Thirty seconds of no oil pressure will cost you the set.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know whether my FE has cross-bolted main caps? Look at the outside of the block skirt for bolt bosses entering the caps from the sides. Cross-bolting is a feature of the high-output 427 blocks, not the common 390 and 428 castings. Confirm the casting number against a Ford casting reference before ordering hardware.

Can I replace FE main bearings with the engine in the car? It is physically possible on some chassis with the pan off and the crank supported, but it is a bad idea. You cannot clean the block properly, you cannot measure housing bore, and you cannot get a micrometer onto the top of the journals. If the mains are worn enough to need shells, the engine is worn enough to come out.

What causes a spun main bearing on an FE? Loss of oil film, almost always. The usual chain is low oil level or a failing pump, then a wiped overlay, then heat, then the shell welds to the journal and turns in the bore. Detonation and extreme cylinder pressure will do it too on a built engine.

Do I need new main cap bolts, or can I reuse them? Reuse depends on whether the original fasteners are torque-to-yield and on their condition. Inspect threads and shank for stretch, and check the service manual's guidance for your engine. Many builders fit new bolts or a stud kit on a fresh bottom end because the fastener is the cheapest part of the assembly and the one carrying all the clamp load.

Should I use main studs instead of the factory bolts? Studs give more consistent clamp load and repeatable torque readings, which is worth having on a performance build or any engine that will see rpm. On a stock-rebuild 390 destined for a truck, quality bolts are adequate. Either way, follow the hardware maker's torque spec and lubricant, not the factory bolt figures.

How much end play should an FE crankshaft have? Use the figure in the factory service manual for your specific engine and check it with a dial indicator, not by feel. What matters more than the number is that you set the thrust faces before final torque and that the reading is inside spec rather than at either extreme.
