Why the Modular water pump trips people up
The Modular family covers a very long production run and a lot of vehicle platforms — cars, trucks, vans and the 6.8 V10 — and the front of the engine is not the same across all of them. Two engines of the same displacement can use different front covers, different pulley arrangements, different belt routing and different pump castings. That is why a pump that physically bolts on is not proof you bought the right one.
Three things actually determine whether a pump is correct:
Rotation direction. A great many Modular applications drive the water pump from the back of the serpentine belt rather than a ribbed section, which reverses the pump's direction of travel. Reverse-rotation pumps use an impeller vaned for that direction. Install a standard-rotation pump on a reverse-rotation drive and the impeller pushes coolant the wrong way — you get poor circulation, hot spots, and an overheat that looks like a thermostat or head gasket problem. Look at how the belt wraps the pump pulley on your engine, and confirm the rotation the replacement pump is built for.
Front cover and mounting interface. The pump bolts to the timing cover on these engines, and the sealing surface, bolt pattern and hose outlets vary by application. Pulley type. Some pumps ship with the pulley pressed on, some do not. If yours does not, you are reusing your original pulley, which means inspecting it for corrosion, runout and belt-surface wear before it goes back on.

How the pump actually fails
Water pumps rarely fail all at once. Knowing the failure mode tells you how urgent the job is.
Weep hole seepage. The pump has a weep hole below the shaft. When the internal seal starts to pass, coolant escapes there — first as a crusty deposit or a stain, later as a drip. That is the pump telling you the seal is finished. It does not heal.
Shaft bearing play. Grab the pulley and check for radial or axial movement, and listen for a growl that changes with engine speed. Bearing failure is what turns a leak into a belt-off, no-charging, no-power-steering roadside stop.
Impeller degradation. Impellers erode and corrode, especially in a system that has run old, contaminated or incorrectly mixed coolant. An eroded impeller still spins and still looks fine from outside, but it moves far less coolant than it should. This is a common hidden cause of "it overheats only when towing or sitting in traffic."
Impeller-to-shaft slip. Less common, but it happens — the impeller loses its grip on the shaft and the pump does nothing at all despite turning perfectly.

Both categories contain good pumps. The differences that matter are in the details you cannot see through the packaging.

What to replace at the same time
The labour to reach the pump is most of the cost of the job, so the parts you replace while you are in there are effectively discounted. Worth doing at the same time:
- Thermostat and its seal or gasket. Cheap, and it shares the same coolant drain-down.

- Serpentine belt, tensioner and idlers if they show wear, glazing or bearing noise. A reverse-rotation drive is hard on a tired belt.

- Clean both sealing surfaces completely. Scrape carefully so you do not gouge aluminium. A single ridge of old gasket will hold a new pump off its seat.
- Use the sealing method the pump was designed for. Some pumps seal on a gasket, some on an O-ring, some on a bead of the specified sealer. Follow the instructions supplied with the pump; do not add sealer to an O-ring joint unless it says to.
- Torque in the factory sequence to the value in the service manual. These are aluminium castings and the fasteners have specific torque and, on some applications, torque-plus-angle procedures. Over-tightening distorts the housing and causes the leak you were trying to fix.
- Refill and bleed properly. Modular cooling systems can trap air, and an air pocket at the pump will destroy a new one quickly and will also give you a false overheat reading. Follow the bleed procedure for your application.
- Recheck after a heat cycle. Bring the engine to full temperature, let it cool, then check the level and inspect the weep hole and every joint you disturbed.
