Hellcat Snout Bearing Rebuild: A Complete DIY Guide
The 6.2L supercharged Hemi is one of the most overbuilt factory engines Detroit ever shipped — forged crank, forged rods, a bottom end that shrugs off 800+ hp. But the one part that isn't bulletproof is the front of the supercharger: the snout. The snout is the gear-drive housing that bolts to the nose of the IHI blower, steps the pulley speed up to rotor speed, and rides on a small set of bearings lubricated by its own little oil reservoir — separate from the engine.
Those bearings are the single most common wear-out item on a high-mile Hellcat. The good news: a snout rebuild is one of the most DIY-friendly jobs on the whole platform. You don't have to pull the supercharger off the engine, you don't crack the rotor pack, and a rebuild kit costs a fraction of a whole-snout replacement. This guide walks the entire job start to finish.
Scope note. This covers the factory IHI supercharger snout on 6.2L Hellcat-family engines (Challenger/Charger Hellcat, Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, Durango Hellcat, Ram TRX). The standard Hellcat uses the 2.4L IHI blower; Redeye, Demon, and Super Stock cars use the larger 2.7L IHI. The snout architecture is the same family but some parts differ between the two — confirm your blower size before ordering.
What the Snout Actually Does
The supercharger pulley doesn't drive the rotors directly. The crank belt spins the snout pulley, and inside the snout a set of helical step-up gears multiplies that speed by a fixed step-up ratio (a bit over 2:1 on the factory unit) so the twin-screw rotors turn fast enough to make boost.
That gear set rides on:
- A front input bearing behind the pulley (takes the belt side-load — this is the one that usually dies first)
- A rear/inner support bearing on the gear shaft
- A pulley snout shaft seal that keeps the snout's dedicated gear oil in and contamination out
The snout holds a small amount of gear oil — it is not fed by engine oil and does not share the engine's filter. That tiny oil volume, the constant belt side-load, and 14,000+ rpm rotor-side speeds are why these bearings are a wear item. Most cars start showing symptoms around 60,000+ miles, sooner on tuned/over-driven (smaller upper pulley) cars that spin the snout faster.
Symptoms of a Failing Snout
Catch it early and it's a bearing kit. Ignore it and metal circulates through the gear set until the snout is scrap. Watch for:
- A whine or growl from the front of the engine that changes with RPM, not load. Snout noise tracks engine speed even at idle/cruise — distinct from the normal supercharger "whine under boost." A bad snout sings when you're just sitting at a light.
- A rougher, grindier note as the bearing wears, often worst on a cold start and quieting slightly as oil warms.
- Pulley wobble or play. With the belt off, grab the supercharger pulley and check for radial play or roughness when you spin it by hand. Any notchy feel = bearing.
- Metal in the snout oil. When you drain the snout, glitter or a magnetic sludge on the drain plug is a clear verdict.
- Belt-tracking issues or premature belt wear from a pulley that's no longer running true.
A healthy snout spins smooth and silent by hand with the belt removed. If yours doesn't, plan the rebuild before the gears take collateral damage.
Parts: Rebuild Kit vs. Whole-Snout Replacement
You have two paths.
Snout rebuild kit (the DIY answer). A kit replaces the bearings and the front seal — the parts that actually wear. Kit cost varies with brand and whether they include the gears. Trusted names in this space:

Rebuild kit contents — bearings, seals, gaskets — differ by brand and by blower size, so confirm the kit matches your 2.4L or 2.7L unit before ordering.
Whole-snout replacement. A complete remanufactured or new snout assembly costs several times what a bearing kit does. This is the move only if the gears are already chewed up, the housing is damaged, or you simply don't want to do the bearing press work. For a car caught early, the kit is the smart spend.
Either way, you'll also want: - Snout gear oil to the factory spec and quantity — do not guess; this is a small dedicated reservoir, not engine oil - A new snout-to-blower gasket or O-ring if your kit doesn't include it - Thread locker (medium-strength) for the pulley/snout hardware per the kit instructions
Tools You'll Need
This is the difference between "afternoon job" and "stuck." Have these staged before you start:
- Supercharger pulley puller (Hellcat/IHI-specific — the pulley is press-fit). Metco and ZL1 Addons sell the correct puller; a generic harmonic balancer puller will damage the pulley.
- Pulley installer/press tool sized for the IHI snout pulley (you cannot hammer it back on)
- Bearing press or arbor press, plus a bearing separator/puller set
- Bearing drivers sized to the snout bearings (press on the correct race only)
- Standard metric sockets and hex/Torx bits for the snout fasteners
- Inch-pound torque wrench for the small snout hardware and foot-pound for pulley/larger fasteners
- Clean drain pan, gear oil pump/syringe for refill, shop rags, brake clean
- A clean bench. Snout internals are precision parts — keep grit out.
If you don't own a press, many shops will press the bearings on/off the gear shaft for a small bench-fee while you do the rest of the R&R at home.
Step-by-Step: Snout Rebuild
Safety/sequence note. Disconnect the battery, let the engine fully cool, and relieve cooling-system pressure if you remove any coolant lines for access. Bag and label every fastener by location.
1. Gain access and drain the snout
Remove the engine cover and the cold-air/intake plumbing as needed to reach the front of the supercharger. Remove the serpentine/supercharger belt (note routing — photograph it). Locate the snout drain and drain the snout's gear oil into a clean pan; inspect it for metal — that's your first hard data point on how far the wear has gone.
2. Pull the supercharger pulley
Using the correct IHI pulley puller, draw the press-fit pulley straight off the snout shaft. Pull square — cocking it scores the shaft. Set the pulley aside; inspect the bore and the shaft surface for galling.
3. Remove the snout from the blower
Remove the fasteners securing the snout housing to the front of the supercharger case. Separate the snout carefully — there is a gasket/O-ring and the gear set will be exposed. Keep the assembly level so nothing drops out of the gear pocket.
4. Disassemble the snout and extract the gear shaft
Remove the retaining hardware/snap rings holding the gear shaft and bearings in the housing. Note the orientation and stack-up of every component — shim washers, spacers, and the bearings have a specific order and direction. Photograph each step. Press the gear shaft assembly out of the housing.
5. Remove the old bearings and seal
Using a bearing separator and press, remove the worn bearings from the gear shaft (or housing, depending on design). Drive out the old front seal. Inspect the gears closely — pitting, chipped teeth, or a frosted wear pattern means you need the full-snout route, not just a bearing kit. Clean every part in solvent and dry it.
6. Press in the new bearings
Press the new bearings into place using a driver that contacts only the bearing race that's being pressed (inner race onto the shaft, outer race into the bore). Never press through the balls/rollers — that brinells the bearing and you'll be back in here in 5,000 miles. Seat each bearing fully against its shoulder. Pack/oil the bearings per the kit instructions.
7. Install the new seal and reassemble the snout
Drive the new front seal in square to the correct depth, lip facing per the kit instructions, with a light film of oil on the lip. Reassemble the gear shaft stack-up in the exact order and orientation you documented, including all shims/spacers — these set gear mesh and endplay. Reinstall snap rings/retainers.
8. Reinstall the snout on the blower
Fit a new gasket/O-ring, set the snout back onto the supercharger case, and torque the fasteners in a cross/star pattern to spec. The figure is an inch-pound spec on an aluminum case — take it from the service data, do not approximate. Confirm the gear set turns smoothly by hand before going further.
9. Reinstall the pulley
Apply thread locker only where the kit specifies. Using the pulley installer tool, press the pulley onto the snout shaft to the correct depth so it lines up with the rest of the belt drive. Do not hammer it.
10. Refill the snout oil
Refill the snout with the correct gear oil to the specified volume. Underfilling cooks the new bearings; overfilling can blow the seal. Reinstall the drain/fill plug to torque.
11. Reinstall belt, verify, and test
Route and tension the belt per your photos. With the belt off first, hand-spin the pulley one last time — it should be silent and smooth. Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and listen: the front-of-engine whine/growl should be gone. Bring it to temp, then recheck the snout for leaks at the seal and drain plug. Take a gentle drive before any boost pulls and re-verify no leaks and no return of the noise.
When to Walk It Into a Shop
DIY this if you're comfortable with press work and have the IHI-specific pulley tools. Send it out if:
- The gears are damaged, not just the bearings (full-snout replacement territory)
- You don't have access to a press and can't get the bearings done at a machine shop
- You find metal contamination heavy enough that you're worried about the rotor pack — that's a full supercharger inspection, not a snout job
A snout rebuild is cheap insurance against a much more expensive supercharger failure. Caught at the first whine, it's a weekend job and a modest parts bill. Caught late, it's a blower.
