Bare set or full kit - the decision that actually costs money

A stretched chain is rarely a chain problem in isolation. Chain slack rises, the tensioner extends further to take it up, the guides take more side load, and the guide faces wear. By the time the noise or the correlation fault shows up, all of it is worn together. Fitting a new chain against tired guides and an extended tensioner gets you a quieter engine for a while and the same job again later.

  • A rattle on cold start that fades after a few seconds. Classic slack-plus-tensioner behaviour: oil pressure has not yet loaded the tensioner and the chain slaps.
  • A persistent rattle or whine from the front of the engine that changes with engine speed rather than with road speed.
  • Cam and crank correlation faults. When the chain has stretched enough, the cam signal drifts relative to the crank signal and the engine controller notices. Scan and record the codes before you buy parts.
  • Guide debris in the oil pan or on the filter. Worn guide material has to go somewhere. If you find it, the guides are already gone.
