Gen III Hemi MDS Lifter Failure: Diagnosis and Delete

The Gen III Hemi's Multi-Displacement System (MDS) is Chrysler's cylinder deactivation setup — the Hemi equivalent of GM's AFM. The concept was fuel economy. The reality, at about the same failure-mode cadence as GM AFM, is a collapsed hydraulic lifter, a wiped cam lobe on one of the deactivated cylinders, and a teardown. If you have a 5.7L or 6.4L Gen III Hemi with MDS and a tick that will not go away, this is almost certainly where you are.

How MDS Fails

MDS lifters on the 5.7L Eagle (2009+ especially) and the 6.4L Apache are hydraulic lifters with an internal locking pin that can retract under commanded oil pressure. When the pin retracts, the pushrod no longer drives the rocker — the valve stays closed, the cylinder is deactivated, and the engine runs as a V4 at light load.

Two failure modes dominate:

  1. Pin hangs partially engaged. The lifter collapses unevenly, the roller carrier goes off-axis, the roller stops rotating, and the needle bearings brinell the cam lobe underneath. Once the roller stops, the lobe is dead within minutes of running.
  2. Pin fails to retract on deactivation command. The lifter tries to run deactivated but mechanically keeps transferring motion to a valve that cannot open against cylinder pressure. Valve-spring / pushrod / rocker damage follows.

The vulnerable cylinders on the Gen III Hemi V8 firing order are the MDS-capable cylinders — MDS is commanded on four of the eight cylinders — confirm which ones against the current FCA / Stellantis service data for your year, as cylinder designation conventions vary by source. If you have a lobe wipe on one of those cylinders, you have an MDS lifter failure.

Symptoms

  • Top-end tick at warm idle. Cold tick that clears up is less often MDS; persistent hot tick is the red flag.
  • Misfire DTC on an MDS cylinder — P0301, P0304, P0306, P0307. Bank-specific fuel-trim drift combined with a random misfire code is the classic early signature.
  • Metal in the oil on a drain — shiny needle-bearing flakes mean the roller is gone and the cam is next if not already.
  • Hemi "tick" — be careful here. The Gen III Hemi has a documented exhaust-manifold-bolt ticking symptom that gets commonly misdiagnosed as lifter noise. Spreader washers, ARP manifold bolt kits, and Dorman/OE manifold replacement are the fix for that tick. Pull a valve cover and confirm rocker alignment before committing to a lifter job.
  • Rough V4-mode driving — if the truck or car runs rough specifically at light-throttle cruise where MDS is active, the MDS system itself is failing actively.

Diagnosis Procedure

  1. Scan for codes. Log which cylinder. Cross-reference against the MDS-capable cylinder list for the specific 5.7 or 6.4 application.
  2. Pull valve covers. Look at each rocker. A rocker sitting crooked or a visibly bent pushrod is immediate evidence. Rotate the engine by hand and watch rocker motion on the suspect cylinder.
  3. Drop the oil pan. If there is any shiny debris on the pickup or the magnetic drain plug, the cam is compromised. Do not reassemble without a full teardown.
  4. Cylinder leakdown on suspect cylinders to identify any collateral valve or seat damage from extended running.
  5. Check MDS solenoid operation with a scan tool. Commanding the MDS solenoid (confirm the current Mopar part number) — and confirming response on the scan tool — separates a failed solenoid from a failed lifter. A stuck solenoid puts MDS in a broken commanded state that can look identical to a failed lifter on the scan tool.

Fix Path 1: MDS-Capable Lifter Replacement + Leave MDS Active

For a customer who does not want to tune or lose factory MDS operation:

  • 16 MDS-capable hydraulic roller lifters matched to the application (5.7 Eagle / 6.4 Apache lifter geometry differs) — use an OE-spec Mopar lifter set or a documented MDS-compatible aftermarket set. Mixing non-MDS lifters into MDS bores destroys the system.
  • Cam inspection — if the lobe is wiped, cam is out. Hemi cams are not interchangeable between 5.7 and 6.4 — confirm the cam core part number for your engine before ordering.
  • New valve springs on the affected cylinders, retainers / locks inspected.
  • Full gasket set — head gaskets (Fel-Pro HS26284PT / HS26559PT or Cometic MLS for boost), valley pan gaskets, intake gaskets.
  • Fresh oil — the OEM 0W-20 / 5W-20 spec is part of what accelerates the failure; run a full-SAPS 5W-30 if the application allows, per your tuner or OE service data.

This path gets the vehicle back to OEM-configured operation. It does not eliminate the root failure mode — MDS lifters can fail again on a long enough timeline.

Fix Path 2: Full MDS Delete

The durable, enthusiast-preferred path.

Hardware:

  • 16 non-MDS hydraulic roller lifters — standard-bore non-deactivating lifters. COMP Cams, Hughes, or OEM non-MDS Hemi lifter sets.
  • MDS valley tray plugs / block-off kit — plugs the oil galleries that feed the MDS solenoid circuit, so residual pressure does not leak into a deleted system.
  • Non-MDS camshaft. This is the upsell moment. If the original cam is wiped, you are buying a cam anyway. Options:
  • COMP Cams NSR Hemi — non-MDS-compatible grinds, various stages.
  • BTR (Brian Tooley Racing) Hemi Stage II / III — very popular street grind.
  • Arrington Performance / Hemi High Performance custom grinds.
  • Confirm current part numbers on the COMP NSR series and the BTR Stage II Hemi for exact application fitment.
  • Upgraded valve springs and retainers — mandatory if the cam duration is stepped up. PAC Racing 1218/1219 and Hellcat-spec dual springs (Mopar PN 5037428AB) are the volume SKUs.
  • MDS solenoids removed and plugged — valley is sealed.
  • MLS head gaskets if the heads are coming off.
  • Intake, valve cover, valley pan gasket set.

Tuning:

  • PCM tune to disable MDS in software — non-negotiable. A hardware delete without a software delete throws codes, commands MDS behavior against non-MDS lifters, and eventually bends a pushrod. HP Tuners, DiabloSport, or a tuner-supplied flash covers this.

The Cam Swap Opportunity

Most Hemi MDS jobs end up as cam-swap jobs, because once the valley is open and the timing cover is off, the labor premium to install a new cam is small. This is the job where a 5.7 Eagle moves up to a BTR Stage II grind on matched springs, or a 6.4 Apache gets a Hemi truck tow cam. Budget for the cam up front — if the lobe is wiped, you are buying a cam regardless.

  • Drop the pan, check for metal, commit to teardown scope honestly
