The honest answer: bearings die of causes, not of age

It rides on a wedge of pressurised oil that the rotating journal drags into the clearance space - a hydrodynamic film. As long as that film is present, thick enough and clean, the bearing surface and the crank journal never contact each other, and neither one wears in any meaningful way.

Oil starvation

The most common bottom-end killer in a small block, and the fastest. It does not require an empty sump. A low-but-not-empty pan combined with hard cornering, hard braking or a steep grade lets the pickup uncover for a second or two, and a second or two without a film is enough to smear a main bearing. Engines that sit for long periods and then get started dry take a smaller version of the same hit every time.

Dirty oil and long intervals

Every bearing has a soft overlay designed to embed small particles so they cannot circulate and score the journal. That capacity is finite. Once the overlay is loaded with debris, further particles start acting like a lapping compound. This is the failure mode behind extended oil change intervals and a filter that has gone into bypass - it looks like nothing is happening for a long time, and then the oil pressure is quietly gone.

Dilution

A leaking injector, a rich running condition, a failing fuel pump diaphragm on a carburetted engine, or a lot of short-trip cold running all put fuel into the sump. Coolant gets in through a failed head gasket or a compromised intake gasket sealing surface. Either one changes the oil's ability to carry load, and coolant contamination is especially hard on bearing overlays. Wrong clearance or careless assembly

Then, and only then, drop the pan. With the pan off you can pull one main cap at a time and look at the shell. Even wear across the face, no copper showing through, no scoring: the bearing is fine.   • Use the oil viscosity the engine was built for, and stay on a break-in oil or a high-ZDDP additive where a flat-tappet camshaft calls for it.
