First: confirm you actually need a camshaft

Before anything comes apart, be honest about the diagnosis. The Duramax valvetrain is gear-driven and roller-followed, and cam lobes on these engines do not simply wear flat the way a flat-tappet gas engine's do. When a Duramax camshaft genuinely needs replacing, it is usually for one of these reasons:

  • A lifter failure that damaged a lobe. A roller that seizes or comes apart will chew the lobe it rides on. If you have found a failed lifter, the camshaft is guilty until inspected.
  • Debris from a bottom-end or injection-side failure. Metal circulating through the oil scores journals and lobes. After a spun bearing or a catastrophic internal failure, the cam is part of the contamination survey, not an assumption.
  • A cam bearing or journal problem. Low oil pressure traced to the cam bores, or visible scoring on the journals, ends with the camshaft out either way.
  • A planned build. A different lobe profile is a legitimate reason to open the engine, and if you are already at that depth the cam is the easy part.

What is not a camshaft: rough idle from injector balance, low power from a turbo or fuel-supply problem, or a tick that turns out to be an injector or an exhaust manifold. Diesel engines have no spark plugs, coils or knock sensors, so the usual gas-engine misfire diagnostics do not apply here - work the fuel and air side first. Verify oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, cut the oil filter open and look at the media, and pull the valve covers to inspect the valvetrain before you commit to a teardown. LLY and LBZ are close relatives but not identical - the LBZ brought a revised bottom end and updated castings. Confirm which one you have from the RPO code on the vehicle's service parts tag rather than going by model year alone, because the mid-year changeover catches people out. Access: why the engine usually comes out

This is the part that decides the job. The camshaft has to withdraw forward, out the front of the block, and it needs roughly its own length of clear space ahead of it. In a truck chassis that space is occupied by the radiator, condenser, charge-air piping and the core support. Some shops fight it in the vehicle after stripping the entire front clip; most pull the engine, and on the crew-cab trucks lifting the cab is a common alternative that leaves the engine on its mounts.

Measure before you commit. Put a tape from the front face of the block to the nearest hard obstruction and compare that to the camshaft length. If the number is short, you are removing the engine whether you planned to or not, and discovering that halfway through a front-cover teardown is how a weekend becomes a month.

Either route means the cooling system, charge-air system, accessory drive and a long list of electrical connections come apart. Bag and label everything. Budget this in days rather than hours - even for a shop that has done it before, an engine-out camshaft on a modern diesel is a multi-day job, and it is worth doing the other wear items while the engine is out.


Teardown sequence, in order

  1. Drain and disconnect. Coolant, oil, fuel lines capped, batteries disconnected. High-pressure fuel lines on a common-rail engine are not reusable in the way low-pressure plumbing is - check the manual before planning to refit any of them.
  2. Get the engine out or the cab off, onto a proper stand or hoist. Do not attempt this leaning over a fender.
  3. Valve covers, rocker assemblies and pushrods. Keep every pushrod and rocker in order and reinstall each in the position it came from. Lay them out in a rack, not a bucket.
  4. Lift and retain the lifters. They have to be raised clear of the lobes and held there or they will drop as the cam comes out. Use the retention method the service manual specifies for your engine - purpose-made tools, factory retainers or magnets, depending on the design. This is where damage happens if you improvise.
  5. Front accessory drive, damper and front cover. The crankshaft damper bolt is a high-torque fastener; use a proper holding tool, never the starter and never an impact against a jammed flywheel.
  6. Record gear timing before anything moves. Photograph the alignment marks between the crankshaft gear, camshaft gear and the injection pump drive gear from several angles. The injection pump on a common-rail Duramax is driven off this gear train, and getting it back wrong is not a minor error.
  7. Cam gear and thrust plate off, camshaft out. Support the camshaft with both hands and withdraw it slowly and straight. A cocked camshaft will damage the cam bearings on the way out, and replacing those is a machine-shop operation.

Do not skip the endplay measurement. A camshaft that walks fore and aft outside spec will hammer the thrust surfaces and shift valve and pump timing under load. Reassembly and the first start

Coat the camshaft journals and lobes with the assembly lubricant specified for the parts you are installing, and follow the cam manufacturer's instructions rather than habit - a roller camshaft has different requirements from the flat-tappet break-in that most gas-engine advice is written around. Slide the camshaft in as carefully as it came out, fit the thrust plate, then set gear timing against your photographs and against the marks described in the service manual. Verify it twice: once when the gears go on, once before the cover seals it away.

Every sealing surface gets cleaned to bare, dry metal. Front cover, valve covers, oil pan and any coolant joint you disturbed all need fresh gaskets and the correct sealant where the manual calls for it - reusing a hardened gasket on a diesel front cover is a guaranteed second teardown. Torque everything - cover, thrust plate, cam gear, damper, rocker hardware - to the factory sequence and value in the service manual for your exact engine, and confirm whether each fastener is torque-to-yield and therefore single-use. Never carry a torque figure over from another engine family.

Before the first start: prime the oil system, fill with oil to the manufacturer's specification, purge air from the fuel system per the manual, and refill and bleed the cooling system properly. Then run it up, hold a fast idle while you watch oil pressure and coolant temperature, and shut it down at the first sign of a leak or a noise you cannot place.
