What the balancer does is absorb torsional vibration. The Replacement, Step by Step

1. Get access. Disconnect the battery. Depending on the vehicle, you will be removing the fan and shroud, possibly the radiator or the front support, and anything else standing between you and the crank snout. Work out your access path before you start turning fasteners, and photograph the belt routing even if there is a decal under the hood.

2. Relieve and remove the serpentine belt. Use the proper tensioner tool. While the belt is off, inspect it and the idlers — a failed damper often takes belt life with it.

3. Lock the crankshaft and break the crank bolt loose. The bolt is tight. Use a proper holding tool or flywheel lock so the torque reacts through the drivetrain rather than through the timing components. Never use the starter to break a crank bolt loose.

4. Pull the balancer with the correct tool. Thread the puller into the balancer tapped holes and draw it off squarely. A jaw-type puller gripping the outer inertia ring will simply pull the ring off the hub and leave you with a hub still on the crank and a much worse afternoon. Pull slowly and keep the puller square to the crank centreline.

5. Inspect everything the balancer was hiding. Check the crank snout for scoring, fretting or a groove worn by the old seal. Check the hub sealing surface — if the new damper brings a fresh one, good; if you are reusing an area that is grooved, a repair sleeve may be required. Inspect the trigger wheel teeth carefully for damage or debris and confirm the sensor and its harness are undamaged. 6. Replace the front crank seal. Drive the old one out without gouging the cover bore, and set the new seal to the depth specified in the service manual using a proper seal driver. Lubricate the lip with clean engine oil. This is an inexpensive part sitting behind a multi-hour job — do not skip it.

7. Install the new balancer with a threaded installer. Clean and lightly oil the crank snout, align the keyway if your application uses one, and draw the damper on with an installer that threads into the crank. Do not hammer it on. Do not use the crank bolt to pull it on unless the factory procedure explicitly calls for that — using the bolt as an installer can damage the crank threads, and stripped crank snout threads turn a routine job into an engine-out repair.

8. Torque the crank bolt to the factory procedure. Many Ford applications specify an initial torque followed by an angle, and may specify a new bolt. Use the value and sequence published in the service manual for your specific engine and model year, and use an angle gauge if angle is called for. Do not substitute a number from another engine.

9. Reassemble and verify. Refit the belt on the correct routing, reinstall cooling components, reconnect the battery, then start it and watch the front pulley. It should run true with no visible wobble. Recheck for leaks after a full heat cycle.

Most Modular balancer replacements land in the low single-digit shop-hour range, with more time on applications where the fan, shroud and radiator support have to come out to make room for the puller.
