How to Replace the Oil Cooler on a Mopar Magnum
TL;DR: Not every 5.2 or 5.9 Magnum left the factory with an engine oil cooler, so step one is confirming what your engine actually has before you buy anything. Where one is fitted, it is an oil-to-coolant heat exchanger living at the oil filter mount, with the filter threaded onto it and coolant routed through it — which is exactly why its failure mode is coolant and oil finding each other. The replacement is not difficult mechanically; it is an access, sealing and cleanliness job. First, confirm what your Magnum actually has
The Magnum family — the 5.2 and 5.9 V8s that carried Dodge trucks, vans, Durangos and Jeep applications through the 1990s and into the early 2000s — was built across a wide spread of chassis, duty ratings and option packages. Engine oil cooling was not universal. Some engines run a plain oil filter adapter with no cooler at all. Others carry an oil-to-coolant cooler integrated at the filter mount, with two coolant hoses feeding it. Heavier-duty and tow-oriented builds are the ones most likely to have the cooler.
Before ordering a part, go and look. Get under the truck, find the oil filter, and see what the filter is threaded into. A bare adapter casting bolted to the block with no coolant plumbing means there is no cooler to replace, and whatever you are chasing is coming from somewhere else. A casting with two coolant hoses running to it is the cooler, and that is the part in question.
Then confirm the current part number against the manufacturer catalogue using your VIN, engine and model year. Magnum-era applications changed across the production run, and adapters, coolers, seals and filter thread arrangements are not interchangeable across every combination just because the displacement matches. Confirm the cooler is the leak — not something that looks like it
An oil-to-coolant cooler that fails internally puts the two fluids into the same circuit. Which direction the mixing runs depends on which side holds more pressure at the time, so the same failed cooler can present as coolant in the oil, oil in the coolant, or both.
Signs that point at an internal cooler failure:
- Milky, tan or coffee-coloured oil on the dipstick and under the oil fill cap, with no other cooling system fault present.
- Oil sheen or a floating film in the coolant recovery bottle, or a greasy ring inside the bottle above the coolant line.
- Coolant loss with no external leak — nothing on the ground, no residue crust at hose joints, no steam, no sweet smell at the exhaust.
- The oil level climbing between changes rather than falling.
Signs that point at an external seal or hose leak instead:
- Oil weeping from the joint between the cooler or adapter and the block, running down the side of the block and collecting on the crossmember or bellhousing area.
- Coolant staining at the cooler hose fittings with clean oil on the dipstick.
Before you condemn the cooler, rule out the things that mimic it. On a Magnum, a cylinder head gasket or an intake manifold gasket failure can put coolant into the oil just as convincingly. So can a cracked casting. Pressure-test the cooling system cold and watch where the pressure goes; a system that will not hold pressure with a cold engine and no visible external leak narrows the field quickly. A combustion gas test at the radiator is the cheap way to separate a head gasket from everything else — if there are combustion gases in the coolant, the cooler is not your problem.
One Magnum-specific differential is worth naming: these engines are known for losing oil through the intake by way of the plenum pan sealing under the intake manifold. That failure burns oil and shows up as consumption and smoke, not as coolant in the oil. If your complaint is oil vanishing with a clean, normal-coloured dipstick and no coolant involvement, look there before you look at the cooler.

The replacement, step by step
1. Drain and depressurise. Let the engine cool completely. Drain the cooling system at the radiator to below the level of the cooler, and drain the engine oil. If the oil is contaminated, plan on a short flush interval afterwards rather than trusting one change to clear it.
2. Gain access. On most Magnum chassis the practical route to the filter mount is from underneath. Get the truck safely on stands, remove any skid plate or shield in the way, and give yourself room to swing a wrench squarely rather than at an angle. Fighting the job through a gap is how adapter fasteners get cross-threaded.
3. Remove the filter, then the coolant hoses. Take the oil filter off first — it is full and it is in the way. Then loosen the cooler hose clamps and work the hoses off. Label them. Getting the coolant circuit back on backwards is an easy mistake that is hard to spot later.
4. Remove the cooler and adapter. Note the position and length of every fastener as it comes out; adapter hardware is frequently not all the same length, and a long bolt in a short hole does damage that is expensive to fix. Support the assembly as the last fastener comes free so it does not drop and tear the mating face.
5. Clean both mating faces properly. Scrape old gasket material off with a plastic or brass scraper, never a steel blade on an aluminium face. Get the surface genuinely clean and dry, then plug or cover the open oil passage while you work. A single scrap of old gasket that falls into the gallery goes straight into the bearings.
6. Fit the new seals dry unless the manual says otherwise. Locate the seals in their grooves, confirm they are seated all the way round, and do not stretch them into place. Where the service manual calls for a light film of clean engine oil on an O-ring to help it seat, use engine oil — not grease, and not sealant, unless sealant is specifically specified.
7. Install and torque in sequence. Bring the assembly up square to the block, start every fastener by hand to confirm the threads are clean, then torque in the factory sequence to the value in the service manual for your engine and year. Even torque across the face is what stops the joint weeping; an over-torqued fastener in one corner will lift the opposite corner.
8. Reconnect the coolant hoses. New hoses and new clamps, positioned so they clear the exhaust and any moving part, with the clamps oriented where you can reach them again.
9. Fit a new filter and refill. Oil first, to the correct quantity. Then coolant, following the fill and bleed procedure in the manual — an air pocket at a cooler high point is a real possibility, and an air-locked circuit will read as overheating within minutes.
10. Run and verify. Bring it up to temperature with the heater on full and watch for oil pressure to come up promptly. Shut it down, let it settle, and go over the adapter joint and both hose ends with a light. Check the oil and coolant again the next day and after the first proper drive.
Expect this to run a couple of shop hours on a clean, accessible truck, and considerably longer on one where the fasteners have been in place for two decades and the access is tight.
What actually goes wrong afterwards
Three failures account for most repeats.
Contaminated oil left in the engine. Coolant in oil attacks bearing material. If the mixing went on for any length of time, one oil change is optimistic. Change it, run the engine a short interval, and change it again — and if the engine has been run any real distance with milky oil, evaluate the bearings honestly rather than hoping.
A trapped air pocket. Follow the bleed procedure in the manual and confirm the heater blows hot at idle before you call it done. An overheat straight after this job is almost always air, not the cooler.
A weeping joint from a reused or pinched seal. If the joint seeps after a heat cycle, take it apart and look at the seal rather than tightening the fasteners further. Over-torquing a distorted joint makes it worse.
While the cooling system is drained, look hard at the rest of it. A water pump that is weeping at the weep hole or has any shaft play is worth doing now, because the coolant is already out and the labour overlaps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Mopar Magnum have an engine oil cooler? No. The oil cooler was not fitted across the whole Magnum range, and it is more common on heavier-duty and tow-equipped builds. Look at the oil filter mount on your own engine before ordering anything — if there are no coolant hoses running to it, there is no cooler there.
Can coolant in the oil be something other than the cooler? Yes, and this matters. A head gasket, an intake manifold gasket or a cracked casting can all produce the same milky oil. Pressure-test the cooling system and run a combustion gas test at the radiator before you commit to a cooler.

How many oil changes do I need after fixing it? At minimum a full change with a new filter at the repair, then a short-interval change after a few hundred miles to clear what the first one left behind. If the oil was heavily contaminated for a long period, the bearings need evaluating rather than more oil changes.
Can I just bypass the cooler instead of replacing it? Do not do that on an engine that was built with one. The cooler is there because the application generates oil temperatures the engine designer wanted controlled — typically towing and heavy-load duty. Removing it changes the oil's operating temperature and shortens the life of everything it touches.
