The replacement, step by step

2. Drain the coolant. Use the radiator drain if the truck has one and it is not seized; otherwise drop the lower hose. Catch all of it - coolant is toxic to animals and is not something to leave on the floor.
3. Disconnect the batteries. These trucks carry two. Disconnect both negative terminals before working around the front of the engine.

10. Torque in the factory sequence. Snug all fasteners in a criss-cross pattern first, then torque to the value in the service manual in the specified sequence. On a small-bolt housing, an even pull-down matters more than landing at the top of the tolerance band.
11. Reassemble in reverse. Pulley, brackets, belt on the routing you photographed, fan, shroud. Verify the belt is seated in every pulley groove before you crank it - a belt riding one rib off will shred within minutes.
12. Fill and bleed. Fill slowly so air can escape as you go, then follow the service manual's bleed procedure, run the engine with the heater on full, and top off as air works out. Watch temperature and heater output together: a system with trapped air reads hot and blows cold, and it looks exactly like a bad pump.
13. Pressure test and drive it. Pressure test cold if you have a tester, then drive it to full operating temperature, let it cool completely, and check the level and the pump area again. Most sealing failures show up on the first full heat cycle, not the first idle.
What people get wrong
Reusing coolant that came out dirty. Brown, gritty or oily coolant is telling you the system has a problem beyond the pump. Putting it back guarantees the new pump lives in the same environment that killed the old one.
Skipping the thermostat. It is right there, it is inexpensive, and it fails in ways that look like a pump problem. Many shops replace it as a matter of course during a pump job. Thermostats are stocked under thermostats and housings.
