TL;DR: On a 2017-and-newer 6.6L L5P Duramax, the thermostat is a cheap part that causes expensive symptoms — slow warm-up, no cab heat, a P0128 code and regens that will not complete. The job itself is a cooling-system job, not an engine job: drain enough coolant to get below the housing, unbolt the thermostat housing, clean the sealing surface properly, fit a new seal, torque the fasteners in the factory sequence to the service-manual value, then refill and bleed the system carefully. The two things that actually determine whether the repair sticks are the sealing surface prep and the bleed. Rushing either one is how a two-hour job becomes an overheat.


Confirm the thermostat is the problem before you drain anything

A diesel that runs cold is not always a diesel with a bad thermostat, but on the L5P it usually is. Work through the symptoms before ordering parts.

Stuck open (the common failure). The engine takes an unusually long time to reach operating temperature, the temperature gauge sits low or climbs and then falls back on the highway, and cab heat is weak or disappears entirely at cruise. The ECM eventually sets P0128 — coolant temperature below thermostat regulating temperature, which is the ECM saying the engine did not reach the expected temperature within the expected time given ambient conditions and run time. Because the L5P relies on reaching full operating temperature to run a clean DPF regeneration, a stuck-open thermostat frequently shows up first as regens that start and never finish, or as a truck that seems to regen constantly.

Stuck closed (the dangerous failure). Temperature climbs steadily and does not come back down, especially under load or while towing. This one is not a "drive it to the shop" fault. An L5P that overheats risks head gasket and cylinder head damage that costs many multiples of the thermostat. Shut it down.

Not the thermostat. A low coolant level, a failing water pump, an air pocket left from a previous service, a plugged heater core, or a coolant temperature sensor reporting incorrectly will all imitate one of the two failures above. Check the coolant level cold and look at live temperature data with a scan tool before committing. If the sensor reading is erratic rather than simply low or high, work the engine sensors side of the diagnosis first — replacing a healthy thermostat to chase a lying sensor is a common and avoidable mistake.

Worth saying plainly: the L5P is a diesel. Cold-running complaints here route through coolant temperature, glow system operation and the aftertreatment strategy — there is no ignition side to chase.

The replacement, step by step

1. Start cold. A hot cooling system is pressurised and will burn you the moment the cap comes off. Let the truck sit overnight if you can.

2. Relieve pressure and drain. Open the cap on the surge tank first so the system can drain, then drain enough coolant to get the level below the thermostat housing. Catch it in a clean container — if the coolant is clean, in good condition and not near its service interval, some of it can go back in. If it is brown, oily, or has sediment in it, the cooling system has a second problem and the thermostat is a symptom, not the fault.

3. Gain access. Depending on the model year and how the truck is optioned, you may need to move an air intake duct, a coolant hose or a bracket out of the way. Photograph everything before you disconnect it. Label hoses if there is any chance of confusion.

4. Remove the housing. Disconnect the hose or hoses at the housing and unbolt it. Expect a small amount of residual coolant to come out even after draining, so have a rag underneath. Do not pry aggressively against the mating surface — if it is stuck, work it loose evenly rather than levering against an aluminium sealing face you are about to rely on.

5. Clean the sealing surface properly. This is the step that determines whether you do the job twice. Remove every trace of the old gasket or seal material with a plastic scraper and a solvent that will not attack aluminium. Do not use a power wire wheel on the sealing face — the gouges it leaves are exactly the leak path you are trying to eliminate. Check the surface for flatness and corrosion pitting.

6. Fit the new thermostat and seal. Confirm the orientation before it goes in. Most thermostats have a jiggle pin or bleed notch that must be positioned as the manufacturer specifies so trapped air can escape past the closed thermostat. Getting this backwards is a known cause of a post-repair air pocket. Fit a new seal dry unless the instructions supplied with the part say otherwise.

7. Torque in the factory sequence. Thermostat housings are thin aluminium castings and they warp. Bring the fasteners up progressively in the factory sequence to the value in the service manual — never with an impact gun, never in one pass, and never "until it feels right." Overtightening cracks the housing; undertightening leaks the first time the system pressurises.

8. Reassemble, refill and bleed. Reconnect hoses, ducting and brackets. Refill with the specified coolant and follow the bleed procedure in the service information for the L5P cooling system. Air trapped in a diesel cooling system does not always announce itself immediately — it shows up as a temperature spike two days later when the pocket finally moves.

9. Verify. Run the engine to full operating temperature with a scan tool connected and watch coolant temperature climb steadily to the expected range and stabilise. Confirm cab heat is hot. Check for leaks at the housing with the system hot and pressurised, then again after a cool-down cycle. Clear stored codes and confirm P0128 does not return over several drive cycles.
