Is the 6.4 Power Stroke a Reliable Engine?
TL;DR: The 6.4L Power Stroke is a strong engine wrapped in an emissions system that was asked to do something it was not really built to do. The long block itself — the block, crank, rods and heads — is stout, and plenty of these trucks have covered high mileage. What hurts owners is the cost profile: the failures that do happen tend to be expensive, and several of the biggest ones require the cab to come off. Treated as a known quantity with a maintenance budget, it is a usable truck. Bought blind as a cheap diesel, it will punish you.
The short answer, and the honest version of it
Ask ten owners and you will get ten answers, because "reliable" is doing a lot of work in that question. Break it into two questions and it gets easier.
Is the engine durable? Broadly, yes. The 6.4L is a common-rail V8 diesel with four valves per cylinder and a pushrod valvetrain, built for Ford by Navistar and fitted to Super Duty trucks for the 2008 through 2010 model years. The block, crank and heads are not the weak point. Maintained, kept near stock, and not left to idle away its life regenerating, it holds together.
Is it cheap to own? No. This is the part that drives the engine's reputation. The 6.4L arrived in the first wave of diesel particulate filter regulations, and the way it meets those rules creates most of the recurring problems on the list below. Almost every well-known 6.4 failure traces back to heat, soot, or diesel fuel ending up somewhere it should not be. And because the engine sits deep in a Super Duty chassis, the labour multiplier on a top-end job is brutal — head gasket work is a cab-off procedure, and shops quote it accordingly.
So: durable engine, expensive ecosystem. Whether that adds up to "reliable" depends entirely on whether you go in with your eyes open.

Where the 6.4L actually gets into trouble
These are the failure modes that come up again and again on high-mileage 6.4L trucks. None of them are mysteries any more, which is genuinely good news — a known problem with a known fix is a budget line, not a surprise.
Regeneration and fuel dilution of the engine oil. The 6.4L cleans its particulate filter by injecting extra fuel late in the cylinder cycle to raise exhaust temperature. Some of that fuel gets past the rings and ends up in the crankcase. On a truck that does short trips, idles a lot, or never completes a regeneration cycle, the oil level can climb and the oil's ability to protect bearings and rings falls away. This is the single most important thing to understand about the engine, because it feeds several of the failures below. Watch the oil level, not just the change interval, and pull a sample if you want to know where you really stand.
Cracked pistons. The best-known 6.4L horror story. Piston failures on this engine are usually discussed alongside two contributing factors: the fuel dilution described above, and aggressive tuning that raises cylinder pressure beyond what the pistons were designed for. A stock, well-maintained truck is not automatically doomed. A heavily tuned one that has been diluting its oil for years is a different proposition. Replacement pistons are available, but by the time you need them you are into a full teardown.
EGR cooler and EGR system fouling. Soot and heat are hard on coolers. A failed EGR cooler can dump coolant into the intake path, and the symptoms — white smoke, coolant loss with no external leak, rough running — are the same ones that mimic a head gasket. Radiator and cooling-stack failures. The 6.4L asks a lot of its cooling system, and radiator failure is a recognised weak point on these trucks. A cooling system that is not keeping up accelerates everything else on this list.
Turbochargers. The 6.4L runs a sequential twin-turbo arrangement — a smaller high-pressure unit and a larger low-pressure unit working together. It makes excellent power and it is more complex than a single charger. Bearing wear, variable-geometry mechanism sticking from soot, and oil-feed problems all show up. Head gaskets and head studs. Ford used torque-to-yield head bolts. The usual upgrade during any top-end job is a set of studs, because if you are already cab-off you never want to go back in. Whether you go studs or new factory bolts, torque in the factory sequence to the values in the service manual for your engine — do not use a figure from a forum post. High-pressure fuel system contamination. As with most high-pressure common-rail diesels, a failure inside the pump can send metal debris downstream through the rails and injectors. How the 6.4L compares to the diesels either side of it
Buyers usually shop the 6.4L against the 6.0L before it and the 6.7L after it. None of the three is faultless.

The 6.4L's real-world reputation for thirst is the other cost people underestimate. Between fuel and the maintenance profile, it is not the cheap diesel its purchase price sometimes suggests.
Buying one without regret: what to actually check
If you are looking at a 6.4L truck, this is the short list that separates a good one from a money pit.
- Pull the dipstick and smell the oil. Fuel smell or a level above full is a red flag that points straight at dilution. Ask for an oil analysis if the seller has one.
- Ask what tuning has been on it, and be sceptical of the answer. A truck with a history of aggressive tunes carries more piston risk than a stock one.
- Check the coolant. Low level with no visible leak, or oily film in the degas bottle, means you investigate before you buy.
- Look for service records covering the cooling stack and EGR system. These are not "if" items on a high-mileage 6.4L, they are "when" items. Records showing they have been done is a genuine plus.
- Watch a cold start and listen to the turbos spool. Excessive smoke, a scream or a rattle from the charger, or a check-engine light for boost control all point at the sequential turbo system.
- Budget as if a cooling and EGR refresh is due. If it is not, you saved money. If it is, you already planned for it.
- Count the glow plugs into your inspection. Hard cold starting on a diesel is a glow system question, not a spark question — there are no spark plugs or coils on this engine. Parts are in glow plugs.
