First: confirm it's the injectors, and confirm it's an LB7

Two gates before you buy anything.

Gate 1 — Is this actually an LB7? The LB7 is the 6.6L Duramax used from 2001 through roughly the first half of 2004, identified by the 8th VIN digit 1. The LLY that replaced it mid-2004 shares displacement and almost nothing that matters here. The critical difference: LB7 injectors sit in the valley under the valve covers. LLY and every later Duramax moved them outboard, reachable without pulling covers. That one packaging change is why an LB7 injector job is a full day or more of labor and an LLY job is not, and why LB7 sets are not interchangeable with anything later. On a 2004 truck, check the VIN rather than the model year — the changeover happened inside the 2004 run.

How "percent over" actually works

Injector ratings on this platform are quoted as a percentage over stock — 30%, 45%, 60%, 100%. That number describes nozzle flow capacity, not horsepower and not the fuel the truck will actually deliver. A 100% over injector on a stock tune does not make double the power; it makes a slightly worse-running truck, because the ECM's fuel tables were written for a stock nozzle and the injector never gets asked for its extra capacity.

Read a percent-over number as a ceiling the tune and the pump then have to be able to reach:

What else goes on the parts list

The under-cover packaging is what makes this decision expensive, and it is also what makes the rest of the list non-optional. Anything you skip, you will pay full labor to reach again.

Injector cups (sleeves). The injector seats in a pressed-in cup in the cylinder head, and those cups corrode and leak — coolant into the cylinder, fuel into the coolant, or both. Inspect every one while the injectors are out; a cup that is pitted or weeping gets replaced now, not next year. This is the platform's most common "we should have done it while we were in there." Install notes worth knowing before you start

Not a step-by-step — the short list of things that turn a clean job into a comeback.

  1. Absolute cleanliness. Common-rail injectors are ruined by debris measured in microns. Cap every open line and port the moment it is opened.
  2. Replace all eight. One new injector alongside seven worn ones gives the ECM an impossible balancing problem.
  3. Torque the hold-down clamps and the high-pressure line nuts to the published values, in the published sequence. Take current figures from GM service information for your model year rather than a forum post — an over-torqued hold-down distorts the injector and an under-torqued line nut leaks at rail pressure.
  4. Reprogram the injector trim/QR codes. Each Bosch injector carries a calibration code that must be entered into the ECM against its cylinder position. Skip it and the truck runs with the old set's corrections applied — balance rates will look wrong and drivability will suffer.
  5. Prime, bleed, and leak-check at rail pressure before the covers go back on. Finding a weeping line nut with the covers off costs minutes; finding it after costs the day again.

FAQ

How long do LB7 injectors last? There is no fixed interval — they fail on wear, and wear depends heavily on fuel quality and filtration. Original sets frequently failed well under 150,000 miles, which is why GM extended special coverage on them at the time; that coverage has long since expired. Can I replace just the one bad injector? Technically yes, practically no. The labor to reach one is the labor to reach all eight, and a single new injector alongside seven worn ones puts the cylinder balance out of range. If one failed on a high-mile set, the others are the same age and the same wear.

Will bigger injectors make my truck faster without a tune? No. The ECM commands a fuel quantity; a larger nozzle just delivers it through more hole area — worse atomization, no more power, worse idle. Over-stock injectors need a calibration written for them.
