Gate 1 — Does your engine actually have AFM?
Active Fuel Management (earlier marketed as Displacement on Demand, still called DOD in most shops) shuts down cylinders 1, 4, 6 and 7 under light load. Eight two-piece hydraulic lifters collapse on command, fed by oil pressure routed through solenoids in a valley-mounted manifold — the VLOM, or Valve Lifter Oil Manifold. It works, and it saves fuel. It also means half your lifters are more complicated than a normal hydraulic roller, and complexity in a lifter is not a virtue at 180,000 miles.
Not every LS truck engine has it. Buy nothing until you have confirmed the RPO on the door jamb or glovebox label.

The physical check beats the paperwork. Pull the valve covers or look at the valley: an AFM engine has an electrical connector feeding the VLOM under the intake manifold. No VLOM, no AFM, no delete needed. The second check is a scan tool — an AFM calibration exposes cylinder-deactivation parameters and can log deactivation-solenoid codes; a non-AFM calibration has neither.

Gate 2 — Is it actually a lifter, or is it something cheaper?
Three different problems get called "the AFM tick," and only one of them requires opening the valley.
- Exhaust manifold bolt or gasket leak. Loudest cold, quiets as the manifold expands and seals, audible from outside the engine at the head-to-manifold seam. If the noise fades as the engine warms, start here.
- Oil consumption without a tick. The AFM-era 5.3's consumption pattern is driven by the AFM pressure relief valve and by the ring package, not by collapsed lifters. A truck burning a quart every 1,500 miles with no misfire and no tick has a consumption problem, and a delete only addresses part of it.
- Collapsed or failed AFM lifter. Present hot and cold, usually rides with a misfire code on cylinder 1, 4, 6 or 7, and does not respond to an oil change. This is the one — and by then the lobe under it needs inspection, because a lifter rocking in its bore has usually been eating the cam.
Diagnose in that order. Two of the three are far cheaper than the third.

Two secondary items belong on the list for most builds: an intake and valley gasket set plus head gaskets and fasteners if the heads come off, and a fresh oil pump if the engine has high miles and the pan is already down. Neither is strictly part of the delete; both are cheap next to doing the job twice.
A product titled "AFM delete kit" that contains sixteen lifters and four trays is a lifter bundle. That is exactly the right purchase for someone reusing a known-good non-AFM cam and sourcing the valley parts separately — but it is not a complete delete, and the title will not tell you. Gate 3 — Lifters only, or cam and lifters?
The honest decision rule is about labor, not horsepower.
Lifters only makes sense when the cam has been inspected and every lobe is clean, you want the stock powerband and driveability, and the engine is otherwise healthy. A stock non-AFM LS truck cam is a perfectly good camshaft. You still need the trays, the valley solution, and the tune.
Cam and lifters makes sense when a lifter actually collapsed, the engine has enough miles that you would not put fresh lifters on an old cam anyway, or you are already paying for the teardown and want power out of it. Once the intake, valley and lifters are out, the cam is a handful of extra bolts: parts cost goes up, labor cost barely moves. That asymmetry is why most complete kits are sold as cam-plus-lifters.
The counter-argument is driveability. A delete camshaft is an off-road part, and a bigger grind changes how the truck tows. On a daily-driven tow rig, a stock-lift delete grind or a serviceable stock cam beats the biggest cam that fits.

The gap to know about: in the current catalog, every AFM-delete-specific camshaft is a 6.0L or 6.2L grind — L76, L92, L94, LY6, LS3. There is no Gen IV 5.3L (LH6 / LMG / LC9) AFM delete camshaft listed, even though the 5.3 is by a wide margin the most common engine people are deleting. Gen V is a different job — AFM vs DFM
Do not carry Gen IV parts logic onto a Gen V truck.
- L83 5.3 / L86 6.2 (2014–2018) use AFM, but direct injection changes the top end and the cam drives the high-pressure fuel pump. Delete parts are Gen V specific.
- L84 5.3 / L87 6.2 (2019-on) use DFM — Dynamic Fuel Management, which can run seventeen different cylinder patterns rather than a fixed four-cylinder mode. It uses a different lifter and a different control strategy. A "DFM delete" and an "AFM delete" are not interchangeable products even though people use the terms as if they were.

Install sequence — the order that keeps you out of trouble
- Confirm the RPO and confirm the engine physically has a VLOM before ordering anything.
- Diagnose — codes, plus a compression or leak-down check on the suspect cylinder, and confirm the tick survives warm-up.
- Drain coolant and oil, disconnect the battery, relieve fuel pressure.
- Remove the intake manifold, valve covers, rockers and pushrods, keeping anything you might reuse in order.
- Remove the VLOM and lifter trays. Expect debris in the valley if a lifter failed — clean it out rather than washing it into the pan.
- Pull the lifters and inspect every lobe under direct light. A flat or scalloped lobe means the cam comes out. A fresh lifter never goes onto a damaged lobe.
- If the cam comes out, drop the pan if there is any metal and inspect the pickup screen. Metal in the valley means metal in the pan.
- Install the camshaft with assembly lube on the journals, correct retainer torque, and the timing set verified.
- Install the non-AFM lifters in the non-AFM trays, prime them in clean oil, and close the valley with the block-off or non-AFM cover in place.
- Reassemble the top end with fresh gaskets and pushrod length checked against actual preload, torqued to spec.
- Load the tune with AFM disabled before the first start — not after. The PCM should never command a deactivation event on the new hardware.
- Break in per the cam manufacturer's procedure, then change oil early and cut the filter open to check for debris.
FAQ
Does an AFM delete fix oil consumption? Partially, and only sometimes. The AFM pressure relief valve is one contributor to the AFM-era 5.3's oil consumption, and deleting the system removes it. But if the piston rings are the problem — which is common at high mileage — the delete will not fix it. Diagnose consumption on its own merits before assuming the delete is the cure.
Can I do an AFM delete without a tune? No. The PCM will still command deactivation and still monitor circuits that no longer exist, which means codes, a permanent check-engine light, and a calibration that is fighting the hardware. The tune is not optional and it is not a performance upgrade — it is part of making the delete function.
Do I have to replace the camshaft? Only if the cam is damaged or you want the power. A stock non-AFM LS truck cam works fine with non-AFM lifters. Inspect every lobe before deciding — and understand that if a lifter collapsed, the odds strongly favor the cam being compromised.
Is an AFM delete legal? Delete camshafts and delete hardware are sold for off-road and racing use only and are not legal for use on pollution-controlled vehicles on public roads in the United States. Emissions rules vary by state and by whether the vehicle is subject to inspection. That is a decision for the vehicle owner, and it is the reason these parts are excluded from mainstream shopping feeds.
Can I reuse the AFM lifter trays with non-AFM lifters? No. The trays are keyed to the lifter body. You need the four standard non-AFM guide trays, and this is one of the most commonly skipped items on a lifters-only purchase.
What is the difference between DOD, AFM and DFM? DOD (Displacement on Demand) was the original marketing name for what became AFM (Active Fuel Management) — same basic four-cylinder deactivation system, and the two terms are used interchangeably for Gen IV engines. DFM (Dynamic Fuel Management) is the newer 2019-on Gen V system that varies which cylinders fire across many patterns. Parts do not cross between AFM and DFM.
