A tick at idle is the classic complaint, but it is not proof. Before you commit to pulling heads, work through the cheaper explanations in order.
Check the oil first. Level, condition and interval history. Hydraulic lifters are oil-pressure devices, and a lifter that is noisy on old, thin or low oil may quieten on fresh fluid of the correct specification. That is diagnostic information, not a repair.
Rule out the exhaust. A leak at an exhaust manifold gasket produces a tick that is loudest cold and fades as everything expands. That pattern is far more common on a high-mileage LS truck than an actual lifter failure, and it is a small fraction of the labour.
