What a 440 actually has for ignition

Before diagnosing anything, be clear on which system is in front of you, because the parts and the failure patterns differ.

Points ignition (early RB big blocks). A breaker-point distributor, a ballast resistor, and an oil-filled canister coil. The points switch the coil's primary circuit directly, so coil health, point condition, dwell and condenser all interact - a tired coil here looks like tired points, and vice versa.

Chrysler electronic ignition (later 440s, and the most common retrofit). A reluctor-and-pickup distributor, a firewall-mounted ignition control unit, a ballast resistor, and a matched coil. The control unit switches the primary circuit instead of points. This is what most running 440s have today, factory or converted.

Aftermarket and HEI-style conversions. These use their own coil with their own primary resistance requirement, and many of them delete the ballast resistor entirely. Mixing a no-ballast coil into a ballasted circuit, or a ballast-required coil into a system that no longer has one, produces weak spark that mimics a worn coil perfectly.

That distinction matters for parts selection. A coil listed simply as fitting a 440 may be built for a different primary resistance than the system it is going into. The symptoms that genuinely point at the coil

Coils are heat-sensitive devices. The windings are separated by insulation, and insulation breaks down when it gets hot. That single fact explains most real coil symptoms.

It starts cold and dies hot, then restarts after it cools. The classic. Drive twenty minutes, the engine stumbles and quits, and after sitting half an hour it fires right up. Internal insulation is arcing between windings once the coil is at temperature.

Misfire under load before misfire at idle. Cylinder pressure raises the voltage required to jump the plug gap. A weakening coil can still fire a plug at idle and fail to fire it at wide-open throttle. If the engine idles clean and breaks up on a hard pull, that is a secondary-output problem, and the coil is on the short list.

Hard hot starting. Cranking a hot engine is when the coil is hottest and supply voltage is lowest. A marginal coil often shows up here first.

Spark that is thin, yellow and inconsistent. A healthy coil snaps across a test gap consistently; a dying one produces weak, intermittent spark that worsens the longer the engine runs.

Visible external failure. Oil weeping from the crimp seam of a canister coil, a cracked secondary tower, or a grey-black carbon track down the outside of the tower. A carbon track is a permanent short to ground and cleaning does not reliably fix it.


The symptoms that look like a coil and are not

This is where most 440 owners lose a weekend and the price of a coil.

Two Mopar-specific items deserve their own paragraph:

The ballast resistor. Chrysler's ignition systems drop voltage through a ceramic ballast resistor on the firewall, and the starter circuit bypasses it during cranking. That is why a failed ballast lets an engine start and then die the instant the key returns from START to RUN. It is cheap, it fails regularly, and it accounts for a large share of the coils replaced unnecessarily. Measure across the ballast and compare to the factory value for your system before condemning anything else, and note that some applications use a dual ballast with two circuits in one housing.

The ignition control unit. The firewall-mounted box fails with heat in exactly the same pattern as a coil. Swapping in a known-good unit is a fast way to separate the two.

The distributor pickup. The magnetic pickup inside an electronic-ignition distributor degrades with heat too. If you are chasing intermittent ignition, put it on the list alongside the engine sensors you would normally check.


How to test a 440 coil properly

Do this in order. It takes less time than replacing parts on a guess.

  1. Check supply voltage at the coil positive terminal, key on. A coil cannot make full output on low input. If supply is low, the problem is upstream — ballast, wiring, connections, or the bulkhead.
  2. Measure primary resistance across the two small terminals with the wiring disconnected and compare it to the specification published for that coil. There is no universal number; ballast-required and no-ballast coils have deliberately different primary resistance.
  3. Measure secondary resistance between the coil tower and the primary terminal specified by the manufacturer, again against the published figure for that coil.
  4. Repeat both measurements hot. This is the step people skip and the step that finds the fault. Run the engine until the failure appears, shut it down and measure immediately. A coil that reads in spec cold and drifts badly out of spec hot is the one stranding you.
  5. Use an adjustable spark tester, not a screwdriver in a plug boot. A tester with a settable gap tells you whether the coil can produce the voltage the engine actually needs. Grounding a wire tells you only that something happened.
  6. Verify coil polarity. Primary leads reversed will still run the engine, with noticeably reduced spark energy and a misfire that appears under load. Confirm the wiring against the diagram for your system.
  7. Inspect the cap, rotor, wires and plugs before you finish. Secondary voltage takes the easiest path available, and a tracked cap or a wire with a broken core makes a healthy coil look sick.

If the coil measures in spec hot and cold, holds spark across a proper test gap, and the cap, rotor and wires are sound, the coil is not your problem. Move to the ballast and control unit.


Choosing a replacement coil for a 440

A few practical points, without buying more than the engine needs:

  • Match the primary resistance to the system. Ballasted or not is the single most important compatibility question. Get it wrong and you either burn points and control units or run weak spark.
  • Oil-filled canister versus epoxy E-core. The canister is correct for an original-appearance engine bay; a modern epoxy-filled coil is generally more tolerant of heat and vibration and cannot weep oil. Both work.
  • Do not buy output you cannot use. A high-output coil on a stock cap, rotor and wire set will find the weakest insulation in the secondary circuit and jump there instead. Step up the whole secondary or none of it.
  • Confirm the current part number against the manufacturer catalogue before ordering, and check bracket diameter — canister coils use different clamp sizes.
  • Replace the ballast resistor at the same time. Cheap, and one of the most common failure points on a Mopar ignition system.
