Mopar 440 Lifters: Install Mistakes That Cost You the Engine

Mistake 1: reusing lifters, or mixing them between bores
This is the one that kills the most cams. A flat-tappet lifter and the lobe it runs on wear into each other. The lifter face is not truly flat — it carries a very slight crown — and the lobe is ground with a slight taper, so the contact patch sits off-centre and spins the lifter in its bore. Once a lifter has worn to a specific lobe, that mating surface is unique to that pair.
Two rules follow, and they are not negotiable:
- A new camshaft gets new lifters. Always. There is no condition under which used flat-tappet lifters go onto a new cam. The cost of a lifter set is trivial next to a second teardown.
- If you are reusing the original cam, every lifter goes back onto the exact lobe it came off. Number a piece of cardboard, pull them in order, keep them in order. A lifter that moves one bore over is running on a stranger's wear pattern.
Roller lifters relax this only partly. A hydraulic roller lifter can be moved to a different lobe because the roller does not wear a mating pattern into the cam the way a flat face does — but the needle bearings, the roller axle and the link bar all wear, and a roller that has developed play or a flat spot on the wheel will destroy a new lobe just as thoroughly. Inspect every roller for radial play and spin resistance before it goes back in. Mistake 2: the wrong oil, or no break-in additive at all
Flat-tappet valvetrains survive on a sacrificial anti-wear film, and on a big block that film comes from zinc dialkyldithiophosphate — ZDDP. Modern API service-category oils have had zinc and phosphorus levels reduced over successive specification revisions to protect catalytic converters. An oil that is perfectly adequate in a roller-cam engine can leave a flat-tappet 440 unprotected during exactly the minutes when it needs protection most.
What this looks like in practice:
- Assemble with the moly-based cam lube supplied with the camshaft, applied to every lobe face and every lifter face. This is not the same product as assembly grease for bearings and it is not interchangeable with it.

Mistake 3: ignoring the lifter bores
The RB block's lifter bores are part of the oiling system, not just a hole. A worn, scored or out-of-round bore lets the lifter cock slightly, kills the rotation the lobe taper is trying to induce, and bleeds oil that was supposed to reach the top end.
Before any lifter goes in:
- Clean every bore with a proper hone or a bore brush and solvent, then wipe until the rag comes out clean. Machining debris and old varnish are the two things that stick a hydraulic lifter.
- Check each lifter for fit. It should slide with light thumb pressure and no perceptible side-to-side rock. Visible scoring in the bore means the block needs attention from a machine shop, not a bigger hammer.

The pushrods and rocker arms and shafts you order follow from that measurement, not from a catalogue guess.
Worth stating plainly as well: a 383 is a B block and a 440 is an RB block, and the RB has the taller deck. Pushrods listed for one are not correct for the other. This mistake is common enough that it is worth checking the listing twice before you order.
Mistake 5: preload set by feel, and a dry first start
Hydraulic lifter preload is the plunger travel below its fully extended position with the lifter on the cam's base circle. Too little and the valvetrain clatters and hammers the lobe. Too much and the plunger bottoms out, the valve is held off its seat as the engine heats up, and you burn a seat or lose compression on that cylinder.
Set it by measurement, not by turning a rocker until it feels right — and on a non-adjustable shaft setup, by ordering the pushrod length the measurement calls for. The target preload comes from the lifter manufacturer's specification for that specific lifter, not from a number remembered off a forum.
Two more items before the first start:
- Prime the oil system. Spin the pump with a priming tool until oil appears at the rocker shafts on both banks. Watch for it — do not assume. Confirming the oil pump is actually delivering to the top end is a five-minute check that prevents a very expensive one.

Budget the second attempt honestly. A wiped flat-tappet lobe means the cam, the full lifter set and every bearing in the engine, because the shed metal circulates. Most builders treat it as a full teardown, a hot tank and a fresh set of bearings, which is a multi-day job plus shop time — commonly ten to twenty shop hours before parts. Against that, a set of new lifters, a bottle of break-in additive, an adjustable checking pushrod and an hour spent measuring is not a meaningful expense. This is one of the few places in engine building where doing it properly is dramatically cheaper than the alternative.
