Mopar 440 Pushrods: Which Brands Are Worth It
TL;DR: On a 440 RB the pushrod is not a generic spacer — it sets valvetrain geometry on a shaft-mounted rocker system that has no adjuster in stock form. Brand matters less than three things the brand controls: material, wall thickness and dimensional consistency. Budget replacement pushrods are fine for a stock rebuild that has not been decked, milled or converted to roller lifters. Anything with more spring pressure, a roller cam, aftermarket rockers or a machined deck deserves a heat-treated chromoly pushrod in a measured length.
Why the RB valvetrain makes pushrod choice a real decision
The 440 is a Chrysler RB big block: a pushrod, overhead-valve V8 with two valves per cylinder and rocker arms mounted on shafts rather than individual studs. That shaft layout is why 440 pushrod selection is not the throwaway decision it is on some engines.
On a stud-mounted rocker system you correct a small geometry error by turning the adjuster nut. On a factory-style RB with hydraulic lifters and non-adjustable shaft rockers, the pushrod length is the adjustment. Get it wrong and you put the lifter plunger at the wrong point in its travel, drag the rocker tip across the wrong part of the valve stem, and load the shafts and stands in a direction they were never meant to see.
Three things change required length on almost every rebuild:
- Machining. Decking the block, milling the heads, or both, shortens the distance from the lifter bore to the rocker and shortens the pushrod you need.
- Head gasket thickness. A thicker or thinner gasket than the original moves the head, and moves it in the opposite direction to milling.
- Lifter and valve changes. A roller lifter has a different pushrod-seat height than a flat tappet. A valve job sinks the valve deeper into the seat; a set of longer valves does the opposite.

What actually separates a good pushrod from a cheap one
Ignore packaging. Four attributes decide whether a pushrod survives, and every one of them is measurable.
Material. The cheapest pushrods are mild steel tubing with pressed-in ends. Serious pushrods are chromoly — commonly a 4130-family alloy — heat treated after forming. Chromoly is stiffer at the same wall thickness and far more tolerant of the cyclic bending load a pushrod sees.
Wall thickness. The single most useful number on a listing, and the one budget sets are quietest about. Pushrod flex is lost lift at the valve, unstable valve motion at high rpm and eventually a bent pushrod. Heavier springs make it worse in a hurry.
Diameter. A larger outside diameter is stiffer than a thicker wall of the same weight, but it must clear the pushrod holes in the head and the passages in the block. Confirm clearance in your own heads first, because factory and aftermarket castings differ.
End construction and tip hardness. One-piece pushrods, with the ends formed from the tube itself, cannot push an end out. Pressed-in ends can. With aftermarket adjustable rockers the adjuster ball rides in the pushrod cup, and both surfaces need to be hardened — a soft cup against a hard adjuster wears a dish into the pushrod.
Oiling. Some pushrods feed oil up to the rocker; some are solid because the shaft system oils another way. This is not a preference — it has to match how your heads and shafts are plumbed, so confirm the arrangement for your exact head and rocker combination before you buy.

Nothing in that table is a substitute for measuring. Treat it as a shortlist, not a part number.
Which brands are worth the money
There is no single right answer, but there are three recognisable groups, and knowing which one you are buying from tells you most of what you need.
Custom-length specialists. Manufacturers such as Manton, Smith Brothers and Trend build one-piece chromoly pushrods to a length you specify, in your choice of diameter and wall. Worth paying for on any 440 that has been machined, converted to roller lifters or fitted with aftermarket rockers: they sell you the exact length, not the nearest one. Lead time is the trade-off.
Established performance valvetrain brands. The larger cam and valvetrain manufacturers — Comp Cams, Crane, Crower, Isky, Manley and Hughes Engines among them — catalogue pushrod lines in stepped lengths across several material and wall grades. If your measured length lands on a stock increment, this is often the best value available: real chromoly, real heat treat, on the shelf. Confirm the current part number, length and wall against the manufacturer's own catalogue, since these lines are revised regularly.
Replacement-grade sets. Bulk sets sold as a straight factory replacement suit a genuinely stock 440 going back together with stock parts. They are not the place to save money on a build with more spring pressure than the factory used.
The honest summary: brand matters less than whether the pushrod is the right length, in the right material, in a wall thickness that suits your spring pressure. A correctly measured mid-tier chromoly pushrod beats a premium-brand pushrod in the wrong length every time. Choose rocker arms and lifters at the same time, because both change the answer.
How to measure length instead of guessing
Buy or borrow an adjustable checking pushrod. The process, in outline:
- Assemble the engine as it will run — correct head gasket, heads torqued in the factory sequence to the values in the service manual, rockers, shafts and lifters installed.
- Rotate the engine so the lifter on the cylinder you are checking sits on the cam base circle.
- Fit the checking pushrod, set the rocker, and mark the valve stem tip with layout dye.
- Rotate through several full cycles by hand and read the wipe pattern the rocker tip leaves on the stem.
- Adjust the checking pushrod until the pattern is a narrow band centred on the valve tip, then measure it.
- On a hydraulic lifter engine, confirm the resulting length also puts the plunger at the preload the lifter manufacturer specifies — that figure varies by brand, so read it from their instructions.
Check more than one cylinder. Machining tolerances mean the four corners of the engine are rarely identical, and if the spread is large you want to know before ordering a set. Frequently Asked Questions
Are stock 440 pushrods adjustable? No. The factory RB valvetrain uses hydraulic lifters with non-adjustable shaft-mounted rockers, so pushrod length itself sets geometry and lifter preload. Aftermarket adjustable rockers change that, and are a common upgrade on built engines.
Do I need new pushrods if I only mill the heads? Usually yes, or at minimum you need to check. Milling moves the head closer to the block, shortening the required pushrod. Whether that is enough to leave the acceptable preload window depends on how much was removed, so measure with a checking pushrod.
Are chromoly pushrods worth it on a mild street 440? On a genuinely stock engine with stock springs, no — a quality replacement set is adequate. As soon as you fit a performance cam with stiffer springs, chromoly with a heavier wall is cheap insurance against flex and bent pushrods.
Can I reuse the original pushrods after a rebuild? Only after inspection, and only if nothing about the geometry changed. Roll each one on a known flat surface to check straightness and inspect both ends for wear, dishing or discolouration. Any pushrod that is bent, galled or blued gets replaced.
What pushrod diameter should I run in a 440? It depends on what your heads will clear and how much spring pressure you run. Larger is stiffer, but it must clear the pushrod holes and any guide plates. Check clearance physically on your own heads before ordering.
Do pushrods have to be replaced when converting to roller lifters? Almost always. A roller lifter generally has a different pushrod seat height than the flat tappet it replaces, which changes the required pushrod length. Measure after the new lifters are installed, not before.
