Mopar 440 Rough Idle After a Cold Start
TL;DR: A 440 that stumbles, loads up or hunts for the first few minutes and then settles into a clean idle is almost never telling you the engine is worn out. Cold-only symptoms point at the systems that are only active when the engine is cold: the choke and fast-idle circuit, the fuel left in the carburetor bowl overnight, the heat riser and intake heat path, and any ignition weakness that a cold, rich mixture exposes first. Work through those in order and confirm each one before buying parts. Save compression and camshaft diagnosis for last, because a genuinely tired engine idles badly warm as well as cold.
What "rough only when cold" actually rules out
The most useful thing about this complaint is what it excludes. An engine with a wiped cam lobe, a burned valve, a leaking head gasket or worn rings does not heal itself at operating temperature. So a 440 that is rough for two to five minutes and then idles clean is pointing you at temperature-dependent systems:
- Enrichment. The choke plate, the fast-idle cam, the choke pull-off and the mixture the carburetor delivers before the engine warms.
- Fuel state. What is actually in the float bowl at first crank, and whether it evaporated overnight.
- Heat management. The heat riser valve, the intake heat crossover, and the thermostat that decides how quickly the engine leaves the cold-enrichment window.
- Spark under load. A weak coil, a marginal ballast resistor, a tracked cap or old wires will misfire first against a cold, rich, dense charge and clean up once the mixture leans out.
That is the search space. Everything below works through it in the order that finds the most faults for the least labour.
Start with the choke system, because it fails most often
On a carbureted 440 the choke is a mechanical system that has usually been decades in service, and it has several independent parts that each cause a distinct symptom.
The choke plate itself. With the engine dead cold, remove the air cleaner and open the throttle once. The plate should snap fully closed. If it sits partly open, the engine idles lean, rough and lopey until it warms. If it stays closed too long after start, the engine loads up, blubbers, smells rich and may foul plugs. Both look like "rough cold idle" and they are opposite faults.
The thermostatic coil. Whether the engine uses a well-mounted coil in the intake, a divorced coil with a linkage rod, or an electric choke, that coil is what times the plate opening to engine temperature. A broken linkage rod, a seized pivot, a cracked coil housing or a missing ground on an electric choke all leave the plate stuck at one position.
The fast-idle cam. The cam raises idle speed while the choke is on. If the cam is worn, gummed or its linkage is out of adjustment, the engine tries to idle cold at its warm idle speed, which is not enough airflow to keep a big block stable while the mixture is still rich.
The choke pull-off (vacuum break). This pulls the plate slightly open the instant the engine catches, so it does not flood. A pull-off with a ruptured diaphragm holds no vacuum and the engine runs badly rich for the first minute. Test it by pulling the plunger out and holding a finger over the port; it should hold position.
Clean the choke shaft and linkage with carburetor cleaner, free the pivots, and set the coil to the index mark it was designed for before adjusting anything else. Choke faults produce more cold-start complaints on big block Mopars than every other cause put together.
The fuel that is not there when you crank
The second common cause has nothing to do with the choke. It is that the float bowl is close to empty at first crank. Modern pump fuel evaporates readily, and a carburetor sitting on a hot big block after shutdown can lose enough bowl fuel that the first several seconds of cranking are spent refilling it. The engine catches on whatever the accelerator pump can deliver, runs on a mixture the choke never got to control, and staggers until supply catches up.
The Thermoquad deserves a specific mention. Its phenolic bowl body is a real advantage for heat isolation, but on high-mileage carburetors the bowl-to-body sealing surface can warp and let fuel leak down into the manifold after shutdown. The tell is a long crank on a cold start after the car sits, then a rough, rich first minute, with a hot restart after a short stop that is perfectly normal. A Carter AVS, an AFB or a Holley will show similar behaviour from a leaking needle and seat or a sunk float.
Check the supporting parts at the same time: a weak mechanical fuel pump, a collapsing rubber supply hose or a clogged inlet filter all delay bowl refill, and a worn accelerator pump cup will not deliver the shot the engine needs on the first throttle blip.
Ignition weakness shows up cold first
A cold, rich mixture is harder to light than a warm, lean one. That means marginal ignition parts fail visibly at cold idle and hide once the engine is warm.
On a points-equipped early 440, check dwell and point condition first. On engines with Chrysler electronic ignition, the parts worth attention are the ballast resistor, the coil, the pickup air gap in the distributor, and the condition of the cap, rotor and wires. A ballast resistor can crack and go open or high-resistance and produce exactly this pattern: rough running when demand on the coil is highest, clearing up as conditions ease.
Do the visual checks in the dark with the hood up. Arcing at the cap, tracking down a boot, or a corona around old wires shows itself instantly and is easy to miss in daylight. Then read all eight plugs: uniformly black and sooty points at over-enrichment, while one or two odd ones point at a localised misfire and tell you which cylinder to investigate. Confirm base timing with a light before condemning anything. An engine that is retarded from a slipped distributor or a stretched timing chain idles poorly cold, warms up slowly and often runs hot in traffic.
Heat riser, thermostat, and the warm-up path
The 440 was designed to warm the intake charge quickly. Two parts do that work and both commonly fail.
The heat riser valve in the exhaust manifold closes when cold to force exhaust through the intake crossover and heat the manifold floor under the carburetor. Seized open, the engine takes far longer to leave the cold-running window, and the symptom is a stumbling, hesitating warm-up rather than a rough idle at rest. Seized closed, the manifold overheats the charge once warm and you get vapour lock and hot-idle problems instead. Free the shaft with penetrant intended for exhaust fasteners, or replace the valve.
A thermostat stuck open, or of the wrong rating, keeps coolant temperature below where the choke and any temperature-dependent controls expect it, so the engine never fully exits its cold calibration. Vacuum leaks that only matter cold
A vacuum leak leans out the idle mixture. Cold, when the calibration is deliberately rich, a small leak can even be masked, which is why some cars idle better cold and worse warm. But a large leak, or one that opens and closes as aluminium and iron parts expand at different rates, will make a cold idle unstable and hunting. Places worth checking on an RB big block:

Intake gaskets and end seals are a known wear item on a big block that has been apart before, particularly where the intake was reinstalled without proper sealing at the ends. When it really is mechanical
If the choke, fuel, spark, heat and vacuum checks all pass and the engine still idles rough only when cold, look at these, in this order, because they run cheapest first:
- Sticking valves. An engine that has sat, or one running heavy varnish, can have a valve stem hanging in the guide when cold and freeing as things expand. Symptom: a distinct miss on one cylinder for the first minutes, gone when warm.
- Valve lash on a solid-lifter engine. Some high-performance 440 variants left the factory with a solid-lifter camshaft. Lash set too tight will hold a valve off its seat when cold. Set lash to the figures and the temperature condition given in the service manual for that specific camshaft, not to a generic number.
- Hydraulic lifters bleeding down. A lifter that will not pump up quickly makes noise and a miss on cold start. If several are involved, look at oil viscosity, oil pressure at cold idle, and the condition of the lifters themselves.
- A worn camshaft lobe. This is the least likely cause of a cold-only complaint, because a wiped lobe misfires at every temperature. Confirm with a compression or leakdown test and by watching rocker motion before ordering a camshaft or anything else for the Mopar 440 RB short block.

Do I need to change the camshaft if only one cylinder misses when cold?
