Mopar 440 Stroker Builds: 496, 500, 512, 528 Done Right
The 440 RB is the best stroker donor the Chrysler big-block family ever produced. Tall raised-deck, siamesed bores good for .060" overbore on a sonic-check, and a 2.750" main journal at the front with a 4.32" factory bore that cleans up to 4.350" without drama. You can stretch a pump-gas street engine well past 500 cubes on a stock block and a good piston. Here's how to build one without making the five mistakes that kill 440 strokers.
Why the 440 is the Donor — Not the 383 or 400
The 383/400 are B-blocks with a 9.98" deck. The 440 is an RB — raised block, 10.725" deck, 4.32" bore design that supports a 4.15" to 4.375" stroke without hitting the pan rails or the cam. The math is the reason everyone builds 440s and not 400s for high-displacement street/strip combos:
- 496 = 440 + .030" bore (4.350") + 4.15" stroke
- 500 = 440 + .040" bore (4.360") + 4.15" stroke
- 512 = 440 + .030" bore (4.350") + 4.25" stroke
- 528 = 440 + .060" bore (4.380") + 4.375" stroke
The 4.15" and 4.25" strokes clear a stock block with minor rod-bolt clearancing at the camshaft side. 4.375" starts asking for block work — notch check on the pan rails, cam clearance on the rod shoulders, and an oil pan with enough depth for the swinging counterweights.
Rotating Assembly Tiers — Pick Honest to the Build
The rotating assembly is where the build is made or lost. Matching the tier to the power target and fuel matters more than buying the shiniest crank.
Street pump-gas 500 hp / 550 lb-ft tier — Scat 9000-series cast crank, I-beam rods, and KB/Silv-O-Lite hypereutectic or Probe dished pistons. Sees pump gas at 9.7:1 to 10.2:1 on aluminum heads, happy to 6,000 RPM, good for 500-550 flywheel. This is the budget 496 street cruiser.
Street/strip 550-650 hp tier — Scat 4340 forged or Eagle ESP 4340 forged crank, H-beam forged rods with ARP 2000 cap bolts, Mahle PowerPak or Wiseco forged pistons. Pump gas capable at 10.0:1 with a dual-plane and iron Edelbrocks, or 10.5:1 with aluminum RPMs. Standard answer for a 500 / 512 street car.
600-800 hp tier — Callies Compstar crank, Callies Ultra or Molnar H-beam rods with ARP 625+, Diamond or JE forged pistons. E85 or race gas, 11.0:1 to 11.5:1. This is where you start aluminum-head and serious carb, or moderate nitrous/boost.
800+ race tier — Callies Magnum or Molnar billet crank, Molnar / Oliver billet rods, CP-Carrillo or Diamond race pistons, aftermarket block for sustained abuse. Beyond our general-audience scope here; call the builder.
Attach ARP 200-series main stud kit to every forged build. Factory main bolts on a stock 440 block are not what you want holding down a 4.25" stroke at 6,500 RPM.
Piston Compression — Match to Heads and Fuel
Compression ratio is a function of piston dome/dish, head chamber cc, head gasket thickness, and deck height after machining. Three targets to aim for:
- 9.5:1–10.0:1, iron heads, pump gas street — dished piston (-10cc to -18cc), 84-88cc chamber, .040" head gasket. Tolerant of mixed-octane pump gas, loves vacuum at idle, and makes honest torque on a dual-plane.
- 10.2:1–10.8:1, aluminum heads, pump gas street — flat-top or shallow dish (-5cc), 84cc aluminum Edelbrock RPM or Indy EZ chamber. Aluminum pulls ~40°F out of chamber heat, so you get away with about a half-point more CR than iron.
- 11.0:1+ race gas or E85 — small dish or flat-top, Indy or BBM aluminum chamber, MLS head gasket, dedicated cooling system.
Dynamic compression math (not just static CR) is the one owners miss. A 10.8:1 static with an aggressive cam closing the intake valve late can run pump gas; a 10.2:1 static with a short-duration cam can rattle. Run the dynamic numbers before you order pistons.
Cam Pairing by Head
The cam has to match the head, not the displacement. A 512 with stock 906 iron heads is wasted cubic inches — the heads cap airflow by ~2,800 RPM and the engine gives up. Match as follows:
- Stock iron 906 / 452 / 516 with bowl work — mild hydraulic flat tappet 230/236° @ .050", .510"/.530" lift. Comp XE275H class. Don't bother with a big cam on stock heads.
- Edelbrock Performer RPM aluminum (84cc) — hydraulic roller 236/244° @ .050", .585"/.590" lift. Comp Xtreme Energy hyd roller or Hughes Engines HE2435BM class. Pulls from idle to 6,200.
- Indy EZ / 440-1 aluminum (84-88cc) — hydraulic roller 240/248° @ .050", .610"/.620" lift. Needs matched pushrods and valvesprings; finally uses the head.
- Indy Maxx aluminum (big-runner) — solid roller 250/258° @ .050", .700"+ lift. Race-only, trans-brake car territory.
Valvesprings, pushrods, and locker rockers are not optional on anything above the mild hydraulic roller. A Harland Sharp or T&D shaft rocker system pays for itself in consistency on a big-cam combo.
Oil Pan and Pickup — The Clearance Check That Gets Skipped
A 4.25" stroke rotating assembly sweeps more pan volume than a stock 440. A Milodon deep-sump pan matched to your chassis (A-body, B-body, or truck/motorhome — confirm the part number per chassis) is the usual answer. The mandatory check: drop the crank in, turn it through 720°, and verify at least 3/8" between the rod shoulders and the pickup tube at bottom dead center.
A Milodon pickup has to be brazed or tack-welded to the pump — the press-fit stock pickup will drop into the pan at sustained RPM and starve the mains. Done. Engine over.
The External Balance Rule You Cannot Violate
The Mopar 440 is externally balanced. That means balance weight lives on the harmonic damper and on the flexplate/flywheel — not on the crank counterweights alone. When you build a stroker:
- Stock forged 440 crank kept → stock 440 damper and stock 440 flexplate/flywheel (matched weight).
- Aftermarket forged stroker crank → either internally balanced (zero-balance damper and flexplate) OR externally balanced to a specific gram-inch spec set by the crank manufacturer.
The failure mode: installing an internally-balanced flexplate on an externally-balanced 440, or a 383 B-block damper on a 440 because the snout diameter matches. Either one will vibrate a thrust bearing out in a few hundred miles. Every rotating assembly invoice must say INT or EXT balance, and the damper and flexplate must match the assembly spec — not the block it came from.

496 pump-gas street cruiser, Charger / Road Runner - Stock 440 block, .030" over, Scat 9000 cast crank, Scat I-beam rods, Probe -14cc dished pistons, 10.2:1 with 84cc Edelbrock Performer RPM aluminum heads (1.74" exhaust port pocket), Comp hydraulic roller 238/244° @ .050" / .580" lift, Mopar M1 or Edelbrock RPM Air Gap dual-plane, 750 CFM Holley vacuum-secondary, Milodon B-body pan. External balance, stock damper and 440 flexplate. Expected: ~530 hp / ~570 lb-ft on 91 octane.
528 E85 race-strip, trans-brake car - Sonic-checked 440 block, .060" over, Callies Magnum 4.375" crank, Molnar H-beam rods, Diamond flat-top pistons, 11.5:1 with Indy Maxx aluminum heads, solid roller 254/262° @ .050" / .710" lift, T&D shaft rockers, Indy single-plane, 1050 Dominator on E85, Milodon deep-sump pan with windage tray. Internal balance assembly with zero-balance damper and SFI flexplate. Expected: 750+ hp at the flywheel.
