Mopar Magnum Harmonic Balancer Replacement: Tools, Torque and Sequence
TL;DR: The Magnum 5.2 and 5.9 balancer is a press fit on a keyed crank snout, held by a large centre bolt. It comes off with a bolt-on puller that pulls from the hub's threaded holes, and it goes back on with a threaded installer — never a hammer, and never a jaw puller hooked over the outer ring. Budget most of the job for access: belt, fan, shroud and often the radiator come out before you touch the damper. Torque the centre bolt in the factory sequence to the value in the service manual for your year, because the figure is high enough that guessing is not an option.
What the balancer does on a Magnum V8, and how it fails
The 5.2 and 5.9 Magnum are Chrysler pushrod, overhead-valve V8s — an evolution of the LA small block with Magnum induction and a roller valvetrain. Like every V8 in that lineage, the crank snout carries a harmonic balancer: a hub pressed onto the crank, an outer inertia ring, and a bonded elastomer layer between them that lets the ring move a few thousandths against the hub and absorb crankshaft torsional vibration.
That elastomer bond is the wear item, and it is why "the balancer looks fine" is not a diagnosis. Failure modes worth knowing:
- Bond slip. The outer ring rotates relative to the hub. The timing mark is then no longer where the crank thinks it is, so ignition timing reads wrong even though nothing electrical changed. On a Magnum this shows up as timing that will not line up with a known-good reference.
- Rubber degradation. Heat, age, oil and coolant break down the elastomer. You will see the ring standing proud of the hub, cracking, chunks missing, or a visible gap you can move with a screwdriver.
- Wobble. Watch the outer edge with a timing light or a dial indicator at idle. Visible run-out means the ring is walking on a failed bond, or the hub is damaged.
- Worn seal surface. The front crank seal rides on the balancer hub, and it grooves the hub over high mileage. A grooved hub will leak through a brand-new seal, which is exactly why the seal and the balancer are a paired decision.
The last point is the one people skip. If you are pulling the damper anyway, drag a fingernail across the seal surface. Tools you actually need
This job punishes improvisation more than most. Two specific tools do the real work, and no substitute is worth the risk to a crank snout.

The two you cannot substitute: a bolt-on puller and a threaded installer. Both belong to the same category of job-specific hardware as engine stands and specialty pullers, which is what the engine stands and tools collection exists for.
Two habits that ruin parts, seen constantly:
A three-jaw puller hooked over the outer ring. All the pulling force goes through the elastomer bond you are trying to preserve — or, if the damper is new, the bond you just paid for. It tears the ring off the hub or destroys the bond of a good part.
A hammer on installation. The Magnum crank snout is not a driving surface, and shock loading a crank drives the thrust bearing into the block. That is a bottom-end repair caused by a front-of-engine job.
Removal sequence
Work front to back and label what comes off.
- Disconnect the battery negative cable. You will be turning the crank and working near the belt.
- Drain the cooling system and get the radiator out of the way. On most Magnum installations there is not enough room to swing a puller with the radiator and shroud in place. Fan, shroud, and usually the radiator come out first.
- Release the serpentine tensioner and remove the belt. Note the routing before it comes off, or photograph the routing diagram.
- Remove any accessory bracket, crank pulley or lower cover in the way. Some configurations put a separate pulley on the face of the damper.
- Lock the crank. Use a crank-holding tool at the balancer, or lock the flexplate or flywheel through the inspection cover. Do not jam a bar into the ring gear teeth and hope.
- Break the centre bolt loose and remove it. Expect it to be very tight. Steady pressure on a long bar; do not shock it with an impact against an unlocked crank.
- Bolt the puller to the hub. Use the tapped holes in the balancer face, with bolts of the correct thread and adequate thread engagement. Short bolts strip the hub threads under load.
- Draw the balancer off evenly. Slow, steady turns. If it fights, stop and check that the puller centre screw is bearing on the crank nose and not on the edge of the bolt hole. Penetrating oil and patience beat force.
- Inspect everything. Check the crank snout for scoring, the keyway for damage or a rolled edge, the key itself for wear, and the old hub's seal surface for a groove. A damaged keyway is a stop-and-reassess moment, not something you press a new part over.
- Replace the front crank seal now. It is cheap and quick with the damper off, and expensive later. Note which direction the lip faces before the old one comes out.
Installation sequence and torque
- Confirm the new balancer is right for your engine. Magnum dampers are not universal across displacement, year or external balance requirement. Verify the current part number against the manufacturer catalogue for your exact engine and application before it goes near the crank.
- Clean the crank snout and the balancer bore. No burrs, no old sealant, no rust. A light film of clean engine oil on the snout helps the press.
- Fit the key correctly. It must be fully seated in the crank keyway, and the balancer keyway must align with it before any pressure is applied. Starting a damper on a misaligned key destroys both.
- Draw the damper on with the threaded installer. Turn until it is fully seated against the crank timing gear or spacer, whichever your engine uses. It should go on square and steady.
- Fit the centre bolt and washer. Fasteners in this position are torque-to-yield in some applications — confirm in the service manual whether yours is reusable or one-time-use.
- Torque the centre bolt with the crank locked, in the factory sequence, to the value in the service manual for your year and engine. This is a high-torque fastener; use a wrench with the range for it and confirm the number against the manual rather than a forum post.
- Reinstall in reverse order. Cover, pulley, brackets, belt in the correct routing, radiator, shroud, fan.
- Refill the cooling system and bleed it.
- Verify before you drive it. Start the engine and watch the damper edge with a timing light for wobble. Confirm the timing mark now reads sensibly. Recheck for leaks at the front seal after a heat cycle.
A competent shop treats this as roughly a two to four labour-hour job on a Magnum, most of it access rather than the damper itself. If the timing cover or timing components are also coming out, budget considerably more — and if the engine is already apart for that work, replace the front seal and inspect the damper while it is trivially easy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reuse the old harmonic balancer if the rubber looks intact? Only after checking it properly. Look for the outer ring standing proud of the hub, cracking in the elastomer, run-out at the outer edge, and a timing mark that no longer agrees with a known reference. Also check the seal surface for a groove — a good bond with a worn hub still causes a front leak.
Why can't I use a regular jaw puller? Because the jaws grip the outer inertia ring, and the ring is only attached to the hub by the bonded rubber. All the pulling load then goes through that bond, which either tears the ring free or ruins a good damper. The correct puller bolts into the tapped holes in the hub face and pulls the hub itself.
Do I have to replace the front crank seal at the same time? It is not strictly mandatory, but it is the right call. The seal rides on the balancer hub, the damper has to come off to change it, and the labour is already paid for. Replacing it while you are in there takes minutes; skipping it and finding a leak means doing the entire job twice.
Can I hammer the new balancer on? No. Shock loading the crank snout pushes the crankshaft against the thrust bearing and can damage it, turning a front-of-engine job into a bottom-end rebuild. Use a threaded installer that screws onto the crank snout and draws the damper on under controlled load.
What torque does the Magnum crank bolt take? It varies by year and application, and it is high enough that the exact number matters. Look it up in the factory service manual for your specific engine and year, and check whether the bolt is a reusable fastener or one-time-use before reinstalling the original.
My timing marks moved after the balancer failed — is the engine damaged? Not necessarily. When the elastomer bond slips, the outer ring carrying the timing mark rotates relative to the hub and crank, so the mark reads in the wrong place while the crank itself is untouched. That said, an engine that has been running on incorrectly set timing for a long period should be checked for the consequences of that, not just for the damper.
Does a stock replacement damper need to be balanced with the engine? It depends on whether your engine is internally or externally balanced. Externally balanced engines rely on counterweight in the damper and the flexplate, so a damper built to the wrong balance specification will introduce vibration. Confirm the balance requirement for your exact engine before ordering.
