TL;DR: A Mopar Magnum — the 3.9 V6, 5.2 V8 and 5.9 V8 built through the 1990s and into the early 2000s — does not use coil-on-plug. It uses one canister-style coil feeding a distributor, so "coils" plural is almost always the wrong search. The job itself is short: two electrical connections, a bracket, and a coil wire. The parts of it that actually go wrong are the ones nobody thinks of as part of a coil job — a cracked distributor cap that made the coil look bad, a coil wire that was never replaced, and a firing order that gets scrambled when the cap goes back on rotated one tower off. Torque figures here are small-fastener values from the service manual, not something to guess at; the sequence is what protects you.


First: a Magnum has one coil, not eight

This is the single most useful thing to establish before you buy anything. The Magnum family uses a camshaft-driven distributor with a rotor and a cap, fed by a single external ignition coil. Spark leaves the coil through one heavy coil wire, enters the centre tower of the distributor cap, and the rotor distributes it to the individual plug wires.

Coil-on-plug on a Chrysler truck engine of that era belongs to the 4.7L PowerTech V8, which is a different engine entirely — different block, different heads, different ignition architecture. People shopping "Magnum coils" are frequently sitting in a truck with a 4.7 badge and no Magnum in it at all, or reading a parts listing written for the wrong engine. Identify the engine before the parts, not after.

The practical consequence: if you have a misfire on one cylinder, the coil is almost certainly not your problem. A single coil that is failing takes the whole engine with it — all cylinders, together. A single-cylinder misfire on a Magnum points at that cylinder's plug, that cylinder's wire, that tower on the cap, or something mechanical. Start there and you will save yourself a part you did not need.

Symptoms that actually point to the coil

A failing coil on a distributor system has a recognisable character. It is rarely a clean on/off failure. The epoxy-filled coil body develops internal breakdown as it heats, so the classic pattern is a vehicle that runs, gets hot, and then stumbles or dies — and restarts thirty minutes later as if nothing happened.

Note the overlap in that first row. On these engines the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor produce heat-related no-start and stall complaints that look identical to a dying coil from the driver's seat. Before you condemn the coil, confirm whether you have a trigger signal at all — a spark tester on the coil wire during a hot-stall event tells you in ten seconds whether the coil is the failure or the victim. Tools and parts you need before you start

Nothing exotic. The whole job is small hand tools, but two of them are not optional.

Tools:

  • A basic socket set with a short extension; the coil bracket fasteners are small and shallow.
  • A nut driver or small ratcheting wrench for the primary terminal nuts, if your coil uses stud-and-nut primary connections rather than a plug connector.
  • An inline spark tester. This is the tool that turns guessing into diagnosis, and it costs less than the coil.
  • A digital multimeter capable of reading both low ohms (primary winding) and high ohms (secondary winding).
  • Dielectric grease for the boot ends.
  • A torque wrench in the low in-lb range. Bracket bolts and terminal nuts on ignition components are small fasteners and they strip easily.

Parts worth having on the bench before you begin:

  • The coil itself. Confirm the current part number against the manufacturer catalogue for your exact year, engine and application — Magnum packaging changed across the production run and across truck, van and Jeep platforms.
  • Distributor cap and rotor. If the coil is old enough to fail, these are old enough to replace, and a carbon-tracked cap will make a brand-new coil look defective.
  • The coil wire. It is the highest-stress wire in the system and the one most often left in place during a "tune-up".
  • A spare set of plug wires, if the existing set is of unknown age.

The replacement, step by step

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Ignition primary circuits can be live with the key off on some configurations, and you are about to put a wrench on a terminal.
  2. Photograph everything before you touch it. Coil orientation, wire routing, which primary terminal carries which colour. Ten seconds now saves an hour later.
  3. Locate the coil. On most Magnum truck applications it is bolted to the intake manifold on the driver's side; van and Jeep packaging differs. If you cannot find it immediately, follow the heavy wire back from the centre tower of the distributor cap — it ends at the coil, every time.
  4. Release the coil wire from the coil tower. Twist the boot to break the seal, then pull the boot, never the wire. Pulling on the conductor separates it internally and you will have created a new fault.
  5. Disconnect the primary connections. Either an electrical connector with a release tab, or small nuts on threaded studs. If it is the stud type, note which terminal each wire came off before removing the second one.
  6. Unbolt the bracket and remove the coil. Inspect the mounting surface. Corrosion between coil bracket and manifold is a genuine ground-path problem on some mounting arrangements.
  7. Install the new coil. Fit the bracket loosely first, then align the coil so the tower faces the same direction the old one did — this keeps the coil wire routing correct and unstressed.
  8. Torque the bracket fasteners and any primary terminal nuts to the values in the service manual for your application. These are small fasteners in aluminium or thin steel brackets; overtightening cracks brackets and strips threads. Do not substitute feel for a value here.
  9. Reconnect the primaries to the correct terminals, using your photograph. Reversed primary polarity on a stud-type coil degrades spark output without producing an obvious hard fault.
  10. Fit the coil wire. A small amount of dielectric grease inside each boot. Push until you feel and hear the terminal seat on the tower. A boot that is merely resting on the tower will arc, and arcing at the coil tower destroys the tower.
  11. Reconnect the battery, start, and verify. Let it reach full operating temperature and stay there. Thermal faults do not reveal themselves in a two-minute idle.

Torque and sequence: what actually matters on a single-coil system

There is no coil bolt tightening sequence on a Magnum in the way there is on a cylinder head — there are only a handful of small fasteners, and the correct figures come from the factory service manual for your application. "Sequence" on this job means something different, and more important: the firing sequence you can destroy while the cap is off.

The Magnum V8 fires 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 and the Magnum V6 fires 1-6-5-4-3-2. Confirm both against the underhood emissions label or the service manual for your specific vehicle before you rely on them. Chrysler V8 cylinder numbering places 1-3-5-7 on the driver's bank and 2-4-6-8 on the passenger bank, front to rear.

The rule that protects you: change one plug wire at a time. Never pull the whole set off the cap at once. If you replace the distributor cap, transfer the wires one tower at a time from old cap to new, with the two caps sitting side by side in the same orientation. A cap installed rotated one tower off will run — badly, with a bang, and sometimes not at all — and it is the most common self-inflicted injury on this job.

If you have to remove the distributor itself for any reason, that is a different and much larger job with its own indexing procedure. Do not pull the distributor as part of a coil replacement.


What to replace at the same time

The coil is one component in a chain, and the chain is as old as the coil. If you are already in there:

  • Cap and rotor. Non-negotiable if either is original or of unknown age. Look inside the cap for grey-black tracking lines running from tower to tower — that is a spark leak path, and no new coil will overcome it.
  • Coil wire and plug wires. Age and heat cycling raise resistance until the spark takes an easier path to ground. Full ignition sets are grouped under Ignition Components.
  • Spark plugs, if the interval is anywhere near due.
  • Valve cover gaskets, if you found oil in the plug wells or on the wire boots. Oil-soaked boots track spark to the head and produce a misfire that looks electrical because it is — just not at the coil. Gaskets for these engines are under Gaskets & Seals.

How many ignition coils does a Mopar Magnum have? One. The 3.9, 5.2 and 5.9 Magnum engines use a single external coil feeding a distributor. If a listing offers you a set of six or eight coils for a Magnum, it is written for a different engine — most likely the 4.7L PowerTech.

Can I test a Magnum ignition coil with a multimeter? Do I need to reset anything after replacing the coil? No relearn procedure is required for the coil itself. If you disconnected the battery, the powertrain control module will relearn its adaptive values over the next several drive cycles, and idle may be slightly unsettled until it does.

Should I replace the distributor cap and rotor at the same time? Yes, unless you personally installed them recently. A tracked cap mimics coil failure convincingly, and the labour to do both together is barely more than doing the coil alone.

What torque do the coil bracket bolts take? Use the value published in the factory service manual for your year and application. These are small fasteners and the correct figure is low — low enough that a long-handled ratchet will strip them without much effort. Do not guess.

My misfire is on one cylinder only. Is the coil bad? Almost certainly not. A single coil serves every cylinder, so its failure affects every cylinder. A single-cylinder misfire points to that plug, that wire, that cap tower, that injector, or a mechanical problem in that cylinder.
