Before you touch a plug: the setup that prevents the expensive mistakes
Almost every ruined thread on a Magnum head starts before the first plug comes out.
Let the engine cool completely. Cast iron heads and steel plug shells expand at different rates. Pulling plugs from a hot head is how a plug seizes on the way out and takes thread with it. Cold engine, every time. If the truck has just been driven, plan the job for the next morning.
Clean the plug wells first. Each plug sits at the bottom of a recess that collects sand, road salt and whatever the engine bay has been through. If you break a plug loose with debris packed around it, all of that debris falls straight into the cylinder. Compressed air and a shop vac at each well is a five-minute step that prevents an engine teardown. Do this with the wires still on so the boots keep the wells sealed while you work around them.
Work one cylinder at a time. Pull one wire, change one plug, put the wire back, move on. This is the single easiest way to make the firing order a non-issue — nothing gets swapped because nothing is ever off the engine in a group. If you must remove all eight wires (to replace the set, for example), label both ends before anything comes loose.
Confirm the plug specification for your engine and year. The 3.9 V6, 5.2 and 5.9 Magnum share a great deal of architecture but not necessarily a plug part number across every model year and emissions package. Tools that make the difference on a Magnum
You can do this job with a basic socket set and a lot of swearing, or with the right handful of tools and no swearing at all. The rear plugs are the reason.

A note on the last one. Modern plugs frequently ship with a plating that is designed to be installed dry, and adding anti-seize to a plug that does not want it changes the effective clamp load for a given torque reading. Follow the plug manufacturer's instruction on their own product. Dielectric grease belongs on the inside of the boot to keep moisture out and to let the boot release next time — it is not a conductor and it does not go on the terminal face.

The sequence, step by step
The Magnum is a pushrod, distributor-ignition V8 with one plug per cylinder and a conventional wire set — there are no coil-on-plug units to unbolt and no second plug per hole. That keeps the job short.
- Cool engine, battery disconnected if you prefer. Not strictly required for plugs, but harmless and it keeps a wrench from finding a live terminal in a tight spot.
- Clear access. Depending on cab and body, the rear plug on one or both banks may come out far more easily with the front wheel turned and the inner fender liner folded back, or with the air intake ducting off. Taking two minutes to make room beats twenty minutes of blind fumbling.
- Blow out the plug wells. All eight, before anything is loosened.
- Remove one wire. Grip the boot, twist to break the seal, pull straight. Never pull on the wire itself.
- Break the plug loose, then back it out slowly. If it binds on the way out, stop, let it cool further if there is any heat in the head, and work it back and forth rather than forcing it. A plug that fights you on removal is telling you the threads need care, not more torque.

- Check the gap on the new plug. Even pre-gapped plugs get knocked in shipping. Set it to the specification for your engine and never pry against the centre electrode.
- Start the new plug by hand. Turn it in with the extension alone, no ratchet, until it seats. If it does not spin in freely for several turns, back it out and start again. This is the step that saves heads.
- Torque it with a wrench, to the service manual value. Cast iron heads are more forgiving than aluminium, but an over-torqued plug still distorts the shell and can pull thread on the next change. Do not substitute a figure from another engine family.
- Refit the wire until the boot clicks onto the plug terminal. A boot that is not fully seated is a misfire waiting for the first wet morning.
- Repeat, one cylinder at a time, then route the wires back into their original looms and separators.
Wire routing matters more than people expect on a distributor engine. Two plug wires from cylinders that fire close together, run parallel and touching for any distance, can induce a spark in each other and produce a misfire that looks electrical but is really a routing problem. Put the wires back in the factory separators and keep them off the exhaust manifolds. How often should Magnum spark plugs be replaced? Follow the interval in the maintenance schedule for your year and plug type — copper-core plugs and long-life precious-metal plugs have very different service lives, so the plug in the hole determines the interval more than the engine does. A truck used for towing, heavy idling or short trips will want them sooner than the book figure.

I dropped debris into a cylinder. Now what? Do not crank the engine. Rotate the crankshaft by hand until that piston is down, then retrieve the debris with a vacuum or a magnet as appropriate for what fell in.
