TL;DR: The most important decision on a 5.2 or 5.9 Magnum water pump is not the brand, it is the rotation direction. Serpentine-belt Magnum engines drive the pump from the flat back of the belt, which turns it the opposite way from an older V-belt LA engine, and they need a reverse-rotation pump with the matching impeller. Fit a standard-rotation pump by mistake and the engine will overheat under load no matter how good the casting is. Rotation is the decision that matters most

The Magnum small block replaced the LA-series in the early 1990s and brought a serpentine accessory drive with it. On that layout the belt wraps the water pump pulley with its smooth backside, so the pump spins opposite to a V-belt engine, where the ribbed side drives every pulley the same way. A water pump impeller is not symmetrical. Its vanes are shaped and curved to sling coolant outward in one direction only. Run the wrong impeller for your drive and it still moves some coolant, just badly — enough that the engine seems fine idling in the driveway and then climbs on the temperature gauge the first time it sees a grade, a trailer, or stop-and-go traffic on a hot day.

This is one of the most common self-inflicted overheating problems on these engines, and it usually happens for one of three reasons:

  • The truck has been converted between belt styles at some point, or carries parts from a donor engine, so what is bolted on now does not match what the catalogue expects.
  • A parts lookup was done by displacement alone. A 5.9 is a 5.9 whether it is an LA or a Magnum, and displacement does not tell you which drive system is on the front of the block.
  • Somebody assumed all small block Mopar pumps interchange. Many bolt up. Not all of them pump.

Manufacturers generally mark reverse-rotation pumps on the casting or the impeller face, and the box will say so as well. Before you order, look at the belt on your own engine and confirm which side of it contacts the water pump pulley, then confirm the current part number against the manufacturer's catalogue for your exact year and drive configuration. What actually fails on these pumps

Water pumps rarely die from wear on the impeller. They die at one of three points, and knowing which one you are looking at tells you a lot about what to buy next.

The shaft seal. This is the most common failure. The seal rides on the shaft behind the impeller and keeps coolant out of the bearing. When it goes, coolant escapes through the weep hole on the underside of the housing. A crusty, stained weep hole with dried coolant residue below it is a pump that is finished, even if it is not dripping today. The weep hole is doing its job when it leaks — it exists so failing coolant vents outside instead of contaminating the bearing grease.

The bearing. Once the seal lets coolant past, the bearing washes out and starts to rumble or develop play. With the belt off, grab the fan or pulley and try to rock it. Any perceptible movement at the shaft, or a gritty feel as you spin it, condemns the pump. A bearing that fails outright can take the fan, the shroud, and the radiator with it, which turns a routine job into a much longer one.

The impeller. Impellers fail in two ways. A stamped steel impeller can corrode and lose vane height in a system run on plain water or on coolant that was never changed, and a pressed-on impeller can slip on its shaft. Either way the pump spins and moves nothing. This is the failure that hides best, because there is no noise and no leak — only an engine that runs hot when it is working.

Because two of those three failure modes are driven by coolant condition, replace a pump and ignore the fluid at your own risk. Flush the system properly and refill with the coolant type specified for your engine rather than whatever is on the shelf. Mixing chemistries is a good way to be back under the hood inside a year. Check the oil, coolant and additives selection and match the specification, not the colour.

The honest summary is that OEM is not magic here. The dealer part is a good part, but it is made by a supplier that also sells into the aftermarket, and premium pumps from established engine-component brands are built to the same standard or better. Where OEM earns its price is on a truck with an unusual or undocumented configuration, where you want the factory catalogue making the rotation and pulley decision for you.

Where economy pumps lose is boring and predictable: seal and bearing life. A pump is not an expensive part in isolation, but on a Magnum it sits behind the fan, the shroud and the belt, and the labour is identical whether the pump lasts two years or ten. Most shops book this job at roughly one to two hours on a truck with good access, longer if the fan clutch fights you or a shroud bolt is seized. Doing it twice is what actually costs money.

Do the rest of the cooling system while you are in there

The pump is the part that failed, but it is rarely the only tired component in the system by the time it does. With the front of the engine open, the marginal cost of the following is very low:

  • Thermostat and housing. A thermostat is a wear item and a stuck one mimics a failed pump on the gauge. If the housing is pitted or the gasket face is corroded, replace it rather than trying to seal it. See thermostats and housings.
  • Gaskets and seals. Use a new gasket, always. Reusing the one you peeled off is the single most common cause of a weeping flange on a fresh install, and the faces need to be genuinely clean and flat before anything goes back on.   • Belt, tensioner and idler. A serpentine belt that has been running on a wobbling pump pulley has not had an easy life. Check the tensioner for smooth travel and the idler for bearing noise.
  • Hoses and clamps. Squeeze the upper and lower hoses cold. Anything mushy, crunchy, or swollen at the clamp is on borrowed time, and the system is already drained.
  • Fan clutch. If it spins freely with the engine cold and stopped, or has been weeping silicone, it is contributing to the overheating you are trying to fix.

For the job itself, a torque wrench and a proper scraper are worth more than any specialty tool. Tighten the pump fasteners evenly in the factory sequence to the value published in the service manual for your engine, and do not improvise a figure — these bolts thread into a casting and strip easily. How do I know if my Magnum needs a reverse-rotation water pump? Look at the belt where it contacts the water pump pulley. If the flat backside of a serpentine belt drives the pump, you need a reverse-rotation pump. If the ribbed or V-section side drives it, you need a standard-rotation pump. What happens if I install the wrong rotation pump? It will usually bolt on and the engine will seem normal at idle. Should I replace the thermostat at the same time? Yes. The system is already drained, the thermostat is inexpensive relative to the labour, and a stuck thermostat produces the same symptom you just spent an afternoon chasing. Doing both means one diagnosis instead of two.

How long should a good water pump last on a 5.9 Magnum? That depends far more on coolant maintenance than on brand. A pump running clean, correct-specification coolant that gets changed on schedule will typically outlive one running old or contaminated coolant by a wide margin. Follow the service interval in the manual for your vehicle rather than a general rule of thumb.

Can I reuse the old gasket if it looks fine? No. Gaskets take a permanent set once they have been clamped and heat cycled, and a reused one is the most common reason a new pump weeps at the flange within weeks. Clean both faces to bare, flat metal and fit a new gasket.
