Decide flat tappet or roller first — the brand question comes second

Every useful conversation about small block Chevy camshaft brands starts here, because the two designs fail in completely different ways and different brands are strong in each.

The 350 spent most of its production life on a hydraulic flat tappet cam. Later small blocks moved to a factory hydraulic roller setup, and those blocks carry the machining and retaining hardware that keep roller lifters from spinning in their bores. On one of those later blocks a roller cam is a straightforward parts swap. On an earlier block it means a retrofit package — a cam ground on the correct roller lobe family, link-bar or keyed roller lifters that do not rely on block provisions, and usually a different thrust arrangement at the front of the cam.

Why this comes first: a flat tappet cam and its lifters break in together under load, and that market has spent two decades dealing with lobe wipe-out on fresh installs. A roller cam does not care about break-in the same way. So "which brand is worth it" has one answer where the lifter must bed into the lobe and a different answer where it rolls. Establish what your block accepts before you shop — a fact about your engine, not a preference — then browse camshafts filtered to what fits.

Most people running a 350 in a truck, a driver or a mild street build are best served by the middle tier. Most who think they need tier three need to be honest with tier two about their converter, gear and compression.


Brands worth the money, and what each is actually good at

Long-established catalogue grinders are worth buying for the ecosystem, not just the steel. A published grind brings a lobe thousands of engines have already run, a spring recommendation matched to the ramp rates, a stated rpm range, and a technical line you can call. On a 350 that ecosystem is the product — a marginally better lobe with no spring recommendation is worth less than an average lobe with a correct spring kit.

OE-replacement specialists, the companies that also supply stock oil pumps, timing sets and bearings, are the right call when the goal is putting it back the way Chevrolet built it. Factory profiles, stock converter and stock engine management where present, and no chain of supporting purchases. On a work truck or a straight rebuild, paying more buys you nothing.

Custom grinders earn their money on combinations the catalogue does not model: aluminium heads with unusual port volume, a stroker with an odd rod ratio, a loose converter with tall gears, forced induction, a narrow rpm window. A good one asks a long list of questions before quoting. If a shop selling "custom" grinds does not ask about your heads, compression, converter, gear, tyre diameter and intended rpm, you are buying a shelf grind with a custom sticker on it.

Be careful with unbranded cam-and-lifter kits sold on price alone. The tell is missing information: no lobe part numbers, no duration published at a stated lift point, no face hardness claim, no lifter manufacturer named. On flat tappet that has a genuinely poor track record, you cannot inspect your way out of it at home, and a wiped lobe puts metal through the whole engine. Whichever tier you land in, confirm the current part number against the manufacturer catalogue for your exact year and block before you order.


The lifter is the part that fails, not the cam

If you take one thing from this article: on a flat tappet small block, lobe failure is almost never a cam-quality story on its own. It is a cam-and-lifter-pair story, and the lifter is usually the weaker half.

Three things drive flat tappet failures on a 350.

Lifter quality and rotation. A flat tappet lifter has a very slightly crowned face and must be free to rotate in its bore. An incorrect crown, a face that is not hard enough, or a burr that stops rotation will destroy a lobe on the first start no matter who ground the cam. Buy the lifters the grinder sells with the cam, never reuse old lifters on a new flat tappet cam, and never move used lifters between bores.

Oil chemistry. Modern service-fill oils carry reduced anti-wear additive levels relative to the oils these engines were designed around, and a flat tappet lobe interface is exactly that load case. Break-in needs an oil or additive that puts the chemistry back. Treat break-in and oil additives as part of the cam purchase.

Spring pressure and break-in. Excess seat pressure during break-in is a classic lobe killer. Follow the manufacturer's break-in instructions exactly — their run time, their rpm, their oil. If the finished build uses high-pressure springs, many grinders want those in after break-in rather than during it. Match your valve springs to the cam card, not to what looks impressive on the shelf.

A roller cam sidesteps most of this, which is much of why retrofit roller packages have become the default for a 350 being built rather than merely repaired.

Note the right-hand column. On a 350 the supporting parts routinely cost more than the cam, and skipping them is the most common way a good cam produces a disappointing engine.


How to buy without getting burned

Work through this before you order.

  • Confirm what your block accepts — factory roller provisions or not. This decides everything downstream.
  • Buy the cam and lifters together, matched by the grinder. On flat tappet this is non-negotiable.
  • Get the cam card before you buy. A grind with no published card is one nobody will stand behind.
  • Check the spring requirement against the card, and verify installed height and coil bind clearance during assembly.
  • Check pushrod length instead of assuming stock length carries over. A different base circle or lifter body changes it.
  • Replace the timing set — a new cam behind a stretched chain gives away the timing accuracy you just paid for. Look through timing chains, gears and tensioners while the front cover is off.
  • Torque everything in the factory sequence to the values in the service manual, including cam thrust plate or retainer hardware where fitted.

Plan the time honestly too. A cam swap in the chassis is normally a full day for an experienced hand and comfortably two for a first-timer; on an engine already out and on a stand it is a fraction of that.


Frequently Asked Questions

Is a more expensive camshaft brand actually faster? Not by itself. Within the same lobe design and the same duration, the difference between a mid-tier and a premium catalogue cam on a 350 is mostly consistency, support and finish quality rather than power. Power comes from choosing the right grind for your combination, which is a selection problem rather than a price problem.

Can I put a roller cam in an older 350 block? Yes, with a retrofit roller package: a cam ground on roller lobes, retrofit roller lifters that do not depend on factory block provisions, and the correct cam thrust arrangement. It is a proven path and it removes the flat tappet break-in risk, but price the whole package rather than the cam alone.

Do I have to replace the lifters with a new camshaft? On a flat tappet cam, always — new cam, new lifters, no exceptions. On a roller cam, used roller lifters can sometimes go back if they are in known-good condition and return to the same cam, but any doubt means new. Shop lifters as part of the cam order.

Why did my new flat tappet cam wipe a lobe? Usually a lifter that could not rotate in its bore, break-in oil without adequate anti-wear chemistry, excessive spring seat pressure, or a break-in run cut short. Cam metallurgy is a factor but rarely the whole story. If it happens the engine has to come apart — the debris does not stay in one place.

Should I buy a matched cam kit or piece it together? A matched kit from one grinder — cam, lifters and springs selected together — is the lower-risk purchase for most 350 owners, because the compatibility work is already done. Piecing it together makes sense when you already have a known-good valvetrain and genuinely only need the cam and lifters.

How do I choose a cam if I do not know my combination? Establish it first: block generation, head casting, compression, intake, converter stall, rear gear, tyre diameter and transmission. Any competent grinder's tech line asks for exactly that list. Guessing is how people end up with an engine that idles badly and is slower than what they replaced.
