SBC 350 Harmonic Balancer: How to Tell When It Is Worn Out

What the balancer actually does on a small block Chevy
The 350 is a pushrod, overhead-valve V8 with a cast crankshaft in most production forms. Every power stroke arrives at the crank as a torsional impulse - the crankshaft twists a few degrees under the hit and springs back. At certain engine speeds those twists reinforce each other into a torsional resonance, and if nothing absorbs it, the energy goes into the crank itself, the main bearings and the timing set.
The harmonic balancer absorbs it. The outer inertia ring is coupled to the hub only through the rubber element, so the ring lags the hub slightly under each impulse and shears the rubber. That shearing turns torsional energy into heat inside the rubber, and the resonance is damped instead of amplified.
Two consequences matter for diagnosis. First, the damper is a consumable: rubber ages, hardens, oil-soaks and eventually lets go, so a balancer that has been on a high-mileage engine for decades is a service item, not a permanent part. Second, on a small block Chevy the crankshaft timing mark is stamped on the outer ring. How to check a 350 balancer in the driveway
You do not need special equipment for the important checks. Work with the engine off and the ignition disabled before turning anything by hand.
1. Compare the timing mark to the keyway. The crank keyway is machined into the snout and never moves. The timing mark is on the outer ring, which can move. Bring the engine to top dead centre on number one - piston at the top, with both valves closed and the rockers loose, not on the exhaust stroke - and see where the outer ring's zero mark sits against the tab or pointer. On a damper that has slipped, the mark is somewhere it clearly should not be, and no amount of distributor adjustment will make the engine behave the way the timing light says it should.
2. Look at the rubber. With good light, run your eye all the way round the gap between hub and inertia ring. Healthy rubber sits flush and even. Condemn the damper for cracking, chunking, oil saturation, or a gap that is visibly wider on one side than the other. Oil-soaked rubber is a double finding: it means the front seal or the timing cover has been leaking onto it long enough to do damage.
3. Try to move the ring. Grip the outer ring and try to rotate and rock it against the hub. There should be no perceptible free movement. Any ring you can move by hand is finished.
4. Watch it run. Start the engine, stand clear of the belt, and watch the outer edge of the damper at idle and on a light throttle blip. It should spin as one solid disc. If the outer edge visibly orbits or the ring appears to breathe in and out, the element has let go.
5. Check the seal surface and the snout. With the damper off, inspect the hub where the front seal rides - a groove worn into that surface will leak against a new seal no matter how carefully it is fitted. Also inspect the crank snout, keyway, key and hub bore for damage or scoring: a damper that has spun on the snout takes the snout with it, and that is a much larger repair. 6. If you want a measurement. A dial indicator on the outer ring face while the engine is barred over by hand will show face runout, and one against the outer diameter shows radial runout. Compare whatever you read to the tolerance published in the service manual for your engine - do not work to a number from a forum.
What kills a small block damper early
- Oil. A leaking front seal or timing cover soaks the rubber and destroys the bond. Fixing the leak is part of the balancer job, not a separate one.
- Heat. Long idling in traffic, a marginal cooling system, or headers routed close to the front of the engine all cook the element.
- Age alone. Rubber cures out over decades whether the engine ran or not. A period-correct damper on a rebuilt engine is a risk even if it looks fine.
- Installing it by hammering. Driving a damper on with a hammer loads the crank thrust bearing and can damage the hub. Use an installation tool that pulls the damper on by the crank bolt threads. Pullers and installers are grouped under engine stands and tools.
- Running the bolt loose or reusing questionable hardware. A damper that is not clamped solid will work the keyway. Torque the crank bolt to the manual's value, and follow the manual on whether the fastener is reusable.

Fitting the wrong one introduces a vibration that no amount of damping will fix. Replacing it: the parts of the job people get wrong
Removal needs a proper puller that bolts to the damper's threaded holes. Never pull on the outer inertia ring - it will separate from the hub and you will have destroyed a damper you were only trying to inspect. Never lever it off, and never use a jaw puller hooked over the ring.
Once it is off, do the adjacent work while access is free. That means the front crankshaft seal, an inspection of the timing cover sealing surface, and a look at the timing set if the cover is coming off anyway. On installation: clean the snout, check the key is seated fully and undamaged, and lubricate the hub bore and seal surface with clean engine oil. Budget a straightforward driveway balancer replacement at roughly one to two shop labour hours on an accessible small block, more where the radiator, fan shroud or accessory brackets have to come out first, and more again if the front cover is coming off with it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a worn harmonic balancer cause a check engine light? Not directly on a carbureted engine, but on a fuel-injected small block it can. If the ring has slipped, the crank reference relative to the timing marks is wrong, and any diagnosis based on those marks is compromised. On engines that read a reluctor tied to the front of the crank, a damper that is running eccentric or has moved can also disturb the signal.
Is a wobbling balancer safe to drive on for a while? No. A ring that is orbiting is a ring that is no longer bonded, and it can leave the engine at speed. It also means the crankshaft is running undamped, which is exactly the condition that cracks cranks and hammers main bearings.
Should I replace the front crank seal at the same time? Yes. The seal is right there, the damper hub is the seal's running surface, and an old seal disturbed by removal will usually weep afterwards. If the old damper hub is grooved where the seal rode, replace or sleeve the hub surface as well.
Can I reuse the crankshaft bolt? Follow the service manual for your engine. Some applications specify a reusable fastener with a standard torque, and others call for replacement. Where the manual calls for a new bolt, use a new one - the clamp load holding the damper on the snout is the only thing preventing it from working the keyway.
Will a solid one-piece pulley work instead? Not on a street engine. A solid pulley has no damping element at all, so the torsional energy the damper was absorbing goes into the crankshaft instead. Solid hubs exist for specific competition applications with purpose-built rotating assemblies, not as a cheaper replacement for a worn street damper.
