SBC 350 Throttle Body Buying Guide
TL;DR: A small block Chevy 350 can wear three completely different throttle bodies depending on how it is fuelled, and they do not interchange. Late-1980s through mid-1990s trucks and vans use a Rochester throttle body injection unit that carries the injectors, the fuel pressure regulator and the idle air control valve in one casting. The 1996-and-later Vortec 5.7 uses a plain air-only throttle body feeding a port-injected intake. A carbureted 350 converted to self-tuning EFI uses a four-injector retrofit unit on the square-bore intake flange. Identify which family you have before you shop, and confirm the current part number against the manufacturer catalogue for your exact year, body and emissions calibration.
First, work out which of the three you actually have
This is where most 350 throttle body purchases go wrong. "Chevy 350" covers three fuelling architectures across decades of production, and the casting tells you far less than what it is responsible for.
Throttle body injection (TBI). GM's answer to emissions-era carburetors on light trucks, vans and some passenger cars from the late 1980s into the mid 1990s. The unit sits where a carburetor would, on a dedicated cast intake, and it does everything: injectors spray fuel down the bores, a fuel pressure regulator sits in the fuel meter body on top, a throttle position sensor rides on the end of the throttle shaft, and an idle air control valve meters a bypass passage around the closed blades. Confirm the Rochester model designation for your application in the manufacturer catalogue rather than assuming — GM used more than one TBI casting across the line, and the V8 unit is not the four-cylinder unit.
Vortec L31 port injection. From 1996 the 5.7 Vortec moved fuel delivery inside the intake manifold — first with a central injection assembly, later with true sequential port injectors. The throttle body is now an air valve and nothing more: a blade, a shaft, an idle air control valve and a throttle position sensor. No fuel passes through it. It is still cable operated; a 350 of this era has no drive-by-wire pedal, so any listing describing an electronic throttle actuator is for a different engine family entirely.
Retrofit EFI throttle bodies. The most common upgrade path for a carbureted 350 is a self-tuning throttle body EFI system that bolts to the standard square-bore carburetor flange. These use multiple injectors around a four-blade throttle body and package the controller, sensors and often the fuel pressure regulator into the unit. They are a fuel system purchase, not a throttle body purchase — you are buying the pump, the return plumbing, the wideband oxygen sensor and the harness along with the casting.

What actually wears out
Throttle shaft and bore. Every one of these units eventually wears where the shaft passes through the housing. The result is an unmetered air leak that gets worse as the engine warms and the aluminium grows. Symptoms are an idle that hunts, a hot idle that hangs high, and a lean condition the fuel trims chase all day without ever settling. This is the single most common reason a used unit should not be trusted, and it is the reason a properly remanufactured unit with fresh bushings is usually the better buy over a wrecking-yard casting.
Carbon at the blade. On the Vortec air-only unit, oil mist from the crankcase ventilation system lacquers the bore right at the blade edge. The blade then sits fractionally open or grabs on tip-in. Cleaning is a genuine fix here — carefully, with the correct solvent, and without scrubbing away any factory coating on the bore.
Idle air control valve. The pintle carbons up in its passage and stops tracking commanded position. You get stalling on decel, a cold idle that will not come up, or a rough idle that clears itself after a relearn. It is a serviceable part on its own; you do not need a whole throttle body for it.
Throttle position sensor. These wear a flat spot in the resistive track at the throttle angle the engine spends its life at — which on a truck is just off idle. The scan data looks fine at both ends of the sweep and drops out in the middle. Sweep it slowly and watch for the glitch rather than reading the endpoints. Replacements live under engine sensors.
Injectors and the regulator, on TBI units only. Age hardens the regulator diaphragm and skews the spray pattern of the injectors. Diagnose before you buy
A throttle body is a satisfying part to replace and a frequently unnecessary one. Three checks separate a genuine failure from a symptom that lives elsewhere.
Test for a shaft leak. With the engine at idle, introduce a small amount of unlit propane around each end of the throttle shaft and watch for an idle speed rise. A rise means air is getting past the shaft. A smoke tester through the intake tract does the same job more clearly and also finds the gasket and hose leaks that mimic a bad throttle body.
Sweep the throttle position sensor. Watch live percentage or voltage on a scan tool while opening the throttle slowly by hand, then closing it slowly. It must move smoothly with no dropouts and return to the same closed value every time. On later systems a throttle position circuit fault sets the standard range and performance codes; on the earlier self-diagnostic systems you read the codes at the diagnostic connector, and the code list belongs to your year's service manual, not to a generic table.
Check what the idle air control is actually doing. If commanded position is pegged high at idle, the engine is short of air somewhere or the base idle is set wrong. Buying criteria that actually matter
Match the calibration, not just the bolt pattern. Two units that fit the same intake can carry different blade sizes, different sensor calibrations and different idle passage geometry. The engine control module was calibrated around one of them. Confirm the current part number against the manufacturer catalogue using your year, engine and emissions family before ordering.
Decide what is included. Some listings ship a bare casting; others include the throttle position sensor and idle air control valve. A bare casting plus two new sensors is often the better technical outcome — you get fresh wear parts rather than someone else's — but only if you have planned it that way deliberately.
New versus remanufactured. A properly remanufactured unit has new shaft bushings, a resurfaced flange and a flow-tested idle circuit. That addresses the actual failure mode. A cheap used casting addresses none of it.
Watch the core requirement and return terms. Remanufactured fuel-carrying units frequently carry a core requirement. Read it before you check out so the core does not turn into a surprise.
Do not buy airflow you cannot use. A larger throttle body on a stock 350 will not add measurable power — the restriction is in the heads and cam timing, not the blade. Throttle body size only starts to matter once better heads, a larger camshaft and a matching intake are already on the engine. Installation notes worth following
Clean both mating surfaces to bare metal and use a new base gasket every time — these gaskets frequently act as an insulator as well as a seal, and a reused one leaks. Torque the fasteners evenly, in the factory sequence, to the value in the service manual for your application; an aluminium flange distorts easily and a distorted flange leaks air you will spend a weekend chasing. Transfer sensors carefully, set any adjustable throttle position sensor to the closed-throttle value the manual specifies, seat every connector fully, and give the module idle and fuel trim relearn time before you judge the repair.

Does a stock Chevy 350 even have a throttle body? Only if it is fuel injected. Carbureted 350s have a carburetor, not a throttle body. Throttle body injection trucks and vans from roughly the late 1980s to the mid 1990s have a fuel-carrying TBI unit, and 1996-and-later Vortec 5.7 engines have an air-only throttle body ahead of port injection.
Will a Vortec throttle body bolt onto a TBI intake? No. They are different flanges serving different systems, and the Vortec unit carries no injectors or fuel regulator. Changing fuelling architecture on a 350 means changing the intake, the fuel system and the engine management together, not just the throttle body.
Can I clean a throttle body instead of replacing it? Often, yes — particularly the air-only Vortec unit, where the problem is carbon at the blade. Cleaning does not fix a worn throttle shaft, a failed sensor track or a hardened fuel pressure regulator diaphragm. Diagnose first, then decide.
Is a bigger throttle body worth it on a 350? Not on a stock engine. The airflow limit on a factory small block is in the cylinder heads and camshaft, not at the blade. Bigger throttle bodies pay off only after the heads, cam and intake have been opened up to need the air.
What tells me the throttle position sensor is bad rather than the throttle body? A slow manual sweep on live data. A failing sensor drops out or spikes somewhere in the middle of travel while reading normally at closed and wide open. A worn throttle body instead shows up as an air leak — an idle that rises when you introduce propane at the shaft ends, or a smoke test that finds air escaping there.
Do I need a new gasket if the old one looks fine? Yes. The base gasket on these units is frequently an insulator as much as a seal, and it takes a compression set the moment it is torqued. Reusing it is a common cause of a post-repair vacuum leak.
