SBC 350 Valve Cover Gaskets: Which Brands Are Worth It
TL;DR: On a small block Chevy 350, the brand printed on the bag matters far less than two things you decide before you shop: which bolt pattern your heads use, and which gasket construction you buy. Get the pattern wrong and nothing seals. Get the construction wrong and it seals for a season, then weeps down the back of the block again. Molded rubber gaskets with a rigid steel carrier are the right default for almost every 350 running stamped steel or cast aluminum covers, and the major gasket houses all build one. Cork and cork-composition gaskets still have a place, but it is a narrower place than the price tag suggests.
First: perimeter bolt or center bolt
This is the fork in the road, and it is the single most common reason a valve cover gasket "does not fit."
Small block Chevy cylinder heads came with two entirely different valve cover attachment schemes over the engine family's production life. Early Gen I heads use perimeter-bolt covers: fasteners run around the outer flange of the cover, through the gasket, into the rail of the head. Later Gen I heads, including the Vortec L31 castings, use center-bolt covers: four fasteners run down through the middle of the cover into bosses cast into the head, with the sealing load spread outward through the cover's own stiffness.
The two are not interchangeable in either direction. A perimeter-bolt cover will not bolt to a center-bolt head, and the gaskets are shaped differently because the load path is different. Before you order anything, pull one cover and count the bolts and where they sit. If they are around the outside edge, you need a perimeter gasket. If there are four down the spine of the cover, you need a center-bolt gasket.
Center-bolt gaskets are also the ones most likely to arrive with extra hardware in the bag — the load spreaders and grommets that sit under the bolt heads. Those parts are consumable. If your originals are cracked, flattened or missing, buy a set that includes them or source them separately from accessories and hardware. Running a center-bolt cover without the spreaders concentrates all the clamp at four points and dishes the cover.

The four constructions, and what each one is actually good at
Every valve cover gasket on the market for this engine is one of four things. Brands compete inside these categories; they do not escape them.

The steel-core molded rubber design is the important one. The steel carrier acts as a built-in stop: once the cover is drawn down onto the core, further torque goes into the steel rather than into squashing the sealing bead flat. That is what makes these gaskets both leak-resistant and forgiving of an enthusiastic arm on the ratchet. It is also why they generally survive being removed and reinstalled — useful on an engine where the covers come off for valvetrain or rocker arm work.
Cork is not junk, but understand what you are buying. Cork seals beautifully the day it goes on, then loses thickness and elasticity with every heat cycle. It is the correct choice when you want the look and the engine does not accumulate hard miles. It is the wrong choice for a daily-driven truck.
Which brands are worth paying for
The honest answer is that four or five gasket manufacturers supply nearly everything in this space, and the meaningful differences are in construction and coverage, not in secret material science.
Fel-Pro is the default recommendation for a reason. Their molded-rubber-on-steel-carrier line is the most widely stocked steel-core gasket for both SBC bolt patterns, and their catalogue coverage across early perimeter and later center-bolt heads is the deepest. If you do not want to think about it, this is the one to buy.
ACDelco is the OE-channel option. For a stock 350 in a stock truck being kept stock, an OE-specification gasket is a completely defensible purchase, and it will match the factory design intent for the cover you already have.
MAHLE / Victor Reinz builds to the same engineering standard as their OE gasket business, and their rubber and steel-core designs are a genuine alternative to Fel-Pro rather than a downgrade. Coverage is good, though not always as deep on the older perimeter-bolt applications.
Mr. Gasket is the value and hot rod line — heavy on cork and cork-rubber, plus rubber options. If your build is a period-correct small block with polished finned aluminum covers, this is the aisle you are shopping in, and that is a legitimate choice made with open eyes.
Edelbrock and the other valve cover manufacturers sell gaskets matched to the rail geometry of their own covers. If you bought tall aftermarket aluminum covers, buy the gasket the cover manufacturer specifies. Aftermarket cover rails are not always the same width or flatness as a factory stamping, and a gasket sized for a stock cover can sit half-on the rail.
Whatever you pick, confirm the current part number against the manufacturer's catalogue for your exact head casting and cover before ordering. Catalogue numbers get superseded, and the perimeter-versus-center-bolt split means a near-miss is a total miss. Full gasket sets, if you are doing more than the covers, are in full gasket sets; individual sealing parts are in gaskets and seals.
Why your last one leaked
New gaskets rarely fail on their own. Four things cause repeat leaks on a 350:
Warped cover rails. Stamped steel covers dimple around every bolt hole when they are over-torqued, and once the rail is wavy no gasket will seal it. Lay the cover rail-down on a flat surface — glass, a table saw top, a piece of plate — and look for daylight. A mildly dished stamping can be flattened carefully with a hammer and a flat block; a badly distorted one is scrap.
Over-torque. Valve cover fasteners on this engine are specified in inch-pounds, not foot-pounds. They are among the lowest-torque fasteners on the whole engine. Tighten them in the sequence and to the value in the factory service manual for your engine and year, working in stages from the middle outward, and stop there. If you are guessing, you are almost certainly over-tightening.
RTV used as a crutch. A steel-core molded rubber gasket does not want sealant. Adding RTV to one usually makes it worse — it holds the gasket off the rail while it cures and gives oil a path. The exception is the corner joints where the intake, head and cover meet, where the service manual may call for a small bead. Follow the manual, not habit.
Contaminated surfaces. Oil film on the rail is enough to break the seal on a rubber gasket. Clean both the head rail and the cover rail down to bare metal with a solvent that flashes off completely, and do not touch the sealing faces afterwards.
One more thing worth checking before you blame the gasket at all: a plugged PCV system pressurizes the crankcase, and a crankcase under pressure will push oil past a perfectly good valve cover gasket. If you have replaced the gasket once already and it is weeping again, verify the PCV path is clear before buying a third one.
