Vortec 4.3 Throttle Body Replacement: Tools, Torque and Sequence

First: which 4.3 is on the bench?
The 4.3L V6 is essentially a small block Chevy with two cylinders removed, and it stayed in production long enough to span two completely different throttle architectures. Getting this wrong is the most common reason a replacement throttle body arrives and does not fit.
The cable-driven version has a throttle cable, and often a cruise cable, landing on a bellcrank at the throttle body. It carries an idle air control valve that meters air around the closed throttle plate, and a throttle position sensor bolted to the throttle shaft. A physical cable running to the plenum is what identifies it.
The electronic version - drive-by-wire - has no cable. A single connector runs to the throttle body, a motor inside positions the plate, and there is no separate IAC valve to unbolt. Idle is a software function and the pedal has its own position sensor. "Reduced engine power" messages and throttle-actuator-control codes are the usual reason people end up here.
The later Gen V 4.3 in 2014-and-newer trucks is electronic and direct-injected - a different engine family despite the shared displacement. Confirm the engine code on your vehicle rather than shopping by year alone, and match the part to it in the 4.3L Vortec V6 parts listings.

Symptoms that actually point at the throttle body
A throttle body earns replacement for a small number of specific reasons. A surprising share of "bad throttle body" complaints turn out to be a vacuum leak somewhere else.
Carbon on the bore and plate edge. A ring of soft black deposit builds where the plate seals against the bore, restricting the small airflow the engine uses at idle. On a cable engine this is usually a cleaning job, not a replacement.
A hardened or crushed base gasket. A true vacuum leak, producing a high or hunting idle the computer cannot trim out. On a scan tool it shows as long-term fuel trim driven positive at idle and near normal at cruise, because a fixed leak matters less as total airflow rises.
A sticking IAC pintle. Stalling on decel, or an idle that hangs high and will not come down after a cold start. Try the valve on its own before the whole throttle body.
Throttle shaft wear. Years of cable tension wear the shaft bushings oval. Air leaks past the shaft, the idle wanders, and no cleaning fixes it. This is the failure that genuinely requires a new throttle body.
Electronic throttle faults. On drive-by-wire units, an internal motor or position sensor fault triggers a limp-in strategy. Scan the codes and read live throttle position data before spending money.

Parts and tools to have on the bench first
Buy the gasket with the throttle body, not after you have it apart - it is not always in the box, and it is the part that decides whether the job holds.
Parts worth having in hand:
- Throttle body assembly, matched to cable or electronic and to your engine code. Confirm the current part number against the manufacturer catalogue before ordering, since these have been superseded.

- Coolant, if your throttle body is coolant-heated, plus a small drain pan.
- New IAC gasket or O-ring if you are transferring the valve.
- Throttle body cleaner and lint-free rags. Not carburettor cleaner on a coated bore.
Tools: a socket set with a short extension, a torque wrench that reads accurately at the low end of its range, hose pliers, a small pick for connector locks, and a scan tool if the engine is drive-by-wire. A stubby ratchet earns its keep on the rear mounting bolt.

Removal and installation: the sequence that matters
Disconnect the battery negative cable first. On an electronic throttle this is not optional - you are unplugging an actuator the computer is monitoring, and you want the module powered down.
Relieve the air side. Loosen the clamp and remove the inlet duct. The throttle bore is now an open path into the engine, so stuff a clean rag in it and keep loose fasteners well clear.
Handle the coolant lines if fitted. Let the engine cool completely, then drain enough coolant to drop the level below the throttle body or clamp the lines. Old spring clamps are easier to replace than to reuse.
Disconnect the cables and connectors. On a cable engine the cable ends pop off the bellcrank with the throttle held open - do not pry on the plastic. On an electronic unit, release the connector lock rather than pulling the harness.
Remove the mounting bolts. Loosen them in a crossing pattern rather than one at a time to the end, which keeps the flange from cocking as tension releases. Lift the throttle body straight off and scrape the old gasket material from both surfaces with a plastic scraper. The plenum face is aluminium and gouges easily.
Transfer the sensors if applicable. The throttle position sensor mounts one way only and must be indexed to the shaft. If it will not seat, it is oriented wrong - do not force it. If the new unit came with a sensor fitted, leave it.
Set the new unit and torque the bolts. Fit the new gasket dry unless the instructions with the part say otherwise. Start all bolts by hand, then bring them down evenly in a criss-cross pattern over two passes. These are small fasteners into an aluminium casting: torque to the value given in the service manual for your engine year and do not improvise. Overtightening warps the flange and creates the vacuum leak you were trying to fix.
Reconnect and refill. Cables, connectors, coolant lines, intake duct. Top the coolant, reconnect the battery and check for leaks warm.
After the bolts: the relearn and the drive that proves it
On a cable engine the computer relearns idle on its own. Let it idle to full operating temperature without touching the throttle, then drive it through a mix of stop-start and steady cruise. Idle may be high for the first few minutes. If it is still wrong after a full warm cycle and a drive, you have a leak, not an unlearned idle.
On an electronic throttle body, most applications need a throttle position learn before idle is correct, and many need a scan tool to command it. Follow the procedure in the service information for your vehicle rather than a generic key-cycle routine. Skipping it is why a correctly installed electronic throttle body can still idle badly or set a fresh code.
Either way, clear stored codes and drive the vehicle long enough for the readiness monitors to run before declaring it fixed. Watch long-term fuel trim at idle: if it is still pushed positive, the leak was never the throttle body gasket, and the intake manifold side of the engine is next.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I just clean the throttle body on a 4.3 Vortec instead of replacing it? Often, yes. Carbon around the plate and bore is the most common cause of a low or rough idle and cleans off in twenty minutes. Replace the unit when the throttle shaft has play, the casting is damaged, or an electronic unit has an internal fault.
